Alright, a while back I posted about Happiness by Mr. Solondz, now I am posting about Storytelling, which I just watched. I'm a bit disappointed, even though the film is very well made, well written, and well acted. I feel let down because I didn't feel it went very far. Perhaps it's just because Happiness was much longer and had a lot more stories, but I just expected Storytelling to cover a lot more issues than it did. I really liked the first segment, the Fiction section, but it was extremely short, and is followed by a much less interesting story, even though it has plenty of great moments. Just overall, I wasn't as entertained as I was with Happiness. The movie has an overall "so what" or "oh well" tone to it, very much the apathetic attitude of the teenage character Scooby in the Non-Fiction segment. I guess that I did enjoy the film, but it wasn't nearly as compelling or insightful as Happiness.

Don't you hate it when a couple days go by and no one responds to what you think is a good post? Happens to me all the time. Anwyay, I just saw Happiness for the first time this week and I was pretty blown away. I enjoyed Dollhouse too but I have not seen Storytelling yet.
But it's directors like Solondz (as well as Wes Anderson, Neil Labute, P.T. Anderson, Sofia Coppola, and Terry Zwigoff) that give me real hope for American cinema! Their films exist in that strangely satisfying place between irony and tragedy. In short: Daddy Likey.

Have not seen Storytelling but saw Dollhouse and Happiness, the former was my favourite. I don't know if it was the same over your side of the Atlantic but the way they touted Happiness here was well weird: it had a chirpy REM tune and basically they made it look like When Harry Met Sally. Something without paedophilia or rapes or broken necks at any rate.
