Never been to the Brixton Academy before. If I end up at the back of the standing area will it still be possible to see the band onstage? I guess the crush in front of the stage might not be too good for anyone with an aneurysm. What is the area around the venue like? Can one sleep on the pavement the night before if you want to qeue early? If you've been there before please share your opinion. |

Brixton slopes down to the front in the standing area. Sometimes the sound isn't too hot (according to some) but you'd have to be pretty talented to fail to get a good view.
Wouldn't sleep on the pavement if I were you though. Brixton isn't as bad as its 80s reputation these days, but I still wouldn't risk it. |

i've only been to the Brixton Academy once and it was not bad. the sloping floor is a brilliant feature, but last time i stood right in front of the mixing desk, which is where i usually stand at gigs cause of the good sound and i'm pretty tall so i still see over peoples heads, but at the Brixton the sound was not the best there..... dunno if it was cause of that specific gig, or a venue problem.....

I've been to several of the NME gigs over the last few weeks and the Sound has been brilliant. It does get a bit packed down the front but they have crowd barriers like they do on football terracing so it does not get to bad. These barriers also mean the moshing tends to be contained in quite small areas. For the Pixies I would get as near to the front as you can handle if you don't like moshing, crowd surfing or beer thrown over you I would stay to the rear. |

I saw the Pixies at Brixton in 1991 and 1992, the sound was amazing. You can't fail to get a good view at Brixton. Even upstairs in the seating area is very good. |

Ive been there about 11 or 12 times and the majority of times the sound has been shit. I think its only bad when your near the pit area, the vocals are usually washed out. Although the best sound is from the balcony, i think.

Anyone know of any decent B&Bs/motels nearby? I'll be Googling later but if anyone happens to know any already it'd be handy...
I can't imagine sleeping on the pavement in Brixton would be a very bright idea...

Thanks for the replies. If everyone is assured of a good view of the stage then no overnight qeueing is neccessary. I suppose one needs only to show up at the venue a few hours before the time. Sounds like Brixton can be a bit of a scary place! |

Definately don't do any overnighting! Good views all round, and the anti crushing barriers are good.

Frankly, I'm shitting myself about going to Brixton (OK, maybe not quite -- I'm sure it's OK in that area since it's very popular for gigs)... I imagine a taxi is a good idea though... and I bet I can't get one... and I'll get stabbed by some drug dealer... which will suck.
Maybe someone in the know should post a decent place for FB forum'ers to meet up beforehand? We can all wear lumberjack shirts or something...

Thr Academy is near the station so don't worry, just don't go off course and wonder through any housing estates. I think the American equilvent is housing projects, Anyway, you get the idea. |

The whole place will be heaving until well after midnight. The gig will finish just after 11 pm and the tubes run until about 12:30. The buses run all night and they are nose to tail through Brixton up to central London. |

any idea on the nearby multistory being open? I've still to find train times out and wandering around central london till 6-7-8am could be a laugh anyway. |

yeah! i'm up for meeting up before hand in a decent pub or something! safety in numbers and all that! i'm a bit scared too! my dad said last time he went to a gig there he noticed everyone walking to the taxi rank, so he walked the opposite way, to hail a taxi before it got there, after about 10 mins one stopped for him and said "you're lucky i stopped, we don't normally pick people up here, normally just lock the doors and drive right through" then said something about him only stopping as my dad was white... scary place!!! lol!

Brixton is a fairly safe place- i wouldn't worry about getting stabbed or anything. And as someone else has already said, the tube station is only a couple of minutes away from the academy- all of the suspicious looking people following you down the street will be on their way to the pixies gig as well... |

Frank better be wearing a lumberjack shirt -- it won't be the Pixies without Official Pixies Attire...

Yeah seriously, Brixton is not that bad. just make your way straight to the venue, and stick to the main roads and you'll be fine.
if anyone starts speaking to you, just ignore them and keep walking. if you're really that worried, just find some other fans and stick with them. |

God, don't worry about Brixton. I live there and it is very safe. Arrive on the tube and go to one of the local bars - some trendy places and a Wetherspoons called the Bee hive near the Academy for those tight with cash. Will be thousands of Pixies fans milling around the streets anyway so will definately not be scary. Enjoy, Brixton is safe as houses.

my 2p about Brixton... don't spend too long in the pub before getting to the gig. Sometimes you can have queues from hell going all the way around the venue (although once the doors open people usually get in quickly).
try not to get stuck at the back where the bars are (the ones inside the stage area) cause the sound is awful there and you get shoved around by idiots who think you're a door or something.
and the best toilets for girls are the ones upstairs, as the queues aren't as bad there. These things are v.important. |

My brother went to see Therapy at Brixton a few years back (he was young and foolish) and was completely unaware that a riot had taken place outside the venue until we all phoned him, panic stricken to find out if he was still alive! His comment - "yeah, I thought there were a lot of police when we came out..."
The Academy is real close to the station, so just take care and be sensible...
I saw Dinosaur Jr there a few years back, and the vocal was completely drowned, but then it was Dinosaur Jr so who knows...
My head was feeling scared, but my heart was feeling free |
