I tend to be kind of wary of topics like this (or at least, wary of giving a definitive answer) "Best" can encompass so many characteristics, after all... and there is no accounting for taste.
Thiago - you seem to be into more minimalist/non-traditional guitarists...and I can totally dig that. Thurston Moore has been a huge influence on my guitar-playing, even more than Joey Santiago...
here is my list of 5 guitar players I think are great (I won't use the term "best")
1)Neil Michael Hagerty
2)Jimi Hendrix
3)Rich Gilbert
4)Django Reinhardt
5)Jorma Kaukonen
I feel that these guitarists raise the bar in terms of guitar as an art form. They are all articulate guitarists who can really make a guitar "speak" (and not in the Peter Frampton talk-box bullshit way).
Most importantly, these 5 guitarists inspire me greatly, are a considerable influence on my own playing, and can actually give me chills (or just an overall warm, content feeling in my chest.)

I am not trying to read too much into your post, however you "seem" (to me at least) to be using the phrase "best guitar player" to loosley convey the concept of best guitar parts creator/songwriting.
Because as a guitar player, technically Joey wasnt very proficient AT ALL. Not to say the parts he played werent perfect for whichever song they were in...that is different all together.
Now whether he came up with them alone, with the band or it was all Black Francis is unknown (however listening to the demo version of "I'm Amazed", it would seem BF had the solo melody mapped out before the studio version was recorded).
Best guitar PLAYER is _very_ subjective and tough to come across but almost everyone's (rock) list should include (among others) in no particular order:
Prince
Jimi
Eddie

I saw this and I thought it said, 'If you think otherwise, you're young. I was quite disappointed when it wasn't. I have to agree though.
To the notables I would suggest Tom Morello, Nick Drake, Robin Guthrie, Jonny Greenwood, Keef and Neil Young again.

My buddy's dad was playing some Alvin Lee for me a couple weeks ago, and it was crazy! He said the old line about him was that his fingers were faster than his brain. It was just some guitar solos and stuff on his computer that I heard; what are his songs like?

Ooh...goodie....this is my favorite survey yet. Wouldn't it be cool to have an American Idol for guitar players? Enough with this singer singy sing sing nonsense, bring back guitar players...real guitar players, not this bar chord wanky Strokes bullshit, nor shreddy Steve Vai bullshit either. Im tellin ya, it can be done.
1. Adrian Belew - Frank likes him. Played with Zappa, Bowie, Talking Heads, King Crimson, and has many a damn good solo record out there. "Op Zop Too Wah" is the best. Just about my fave..he can tear anyone up with musicianship, but tends to go for songs...really good ones at that.
2. Link Wray - Singlehandedly invented the guitar based hook or "riff" as we call it. "Rumble" is the beginning and end of good rock music.
3. Duane Denison - The Jesus Lizard's guitarist. A seemless blend of many styles into one unbelievably wonderful band. Dear god I miss them. The perfect balance of ability to play, and knowledge of when to not overdo things.
4. David Gilmour - Yeah, yeah, we're all sick of hearing about Pink Floyd, but damn, Gilmour can play four notes that will stick with you longer than the next twenty guitar players. Beats Clapton at his own game.
5. Billy Gibbons - When asked who his favorite guitarist was, Hendrix replied that there was some new guy from Texas that really did it for him. Same deal as with Gilmour...ridiculous amount of taste. No need for flash. And tone....oh my freaking god, he's the John the Baptist of tone.
I could go on for days, but other honerable mentions (personal faves, I'd never attempt to argue who is the best, but if there's one who effected guitar playing more than any, it would have to be Hendrix) include....D Boon, both Swervedriver guitarists, Townshend, Keith Richards (only with Mick Taylor at his side), Gordie from Killing Joke (disgustingly overlooked when it comes to riff mongering), Leo Kottke, Tony Rice (the Jimi Hendrix of bluegrass....this guy is unreal), Toni Iommi (I mean....come on..), Kevin Sheilds (based solely on creativity, not ability), Neil Young (not really amazing, but so tasteful and unique), and last but not least, Zappa (did things that made even Hendrix jealous...very overlooked as well).

Brian May from Queen. He was so tevolutionary as a guitarist with that weird tone and all those harmonies, and so versatile, too. Just listen to his classical guitar playing at the end of The Prophets Song/beginning of Love of My Life. Or check out Dreamers Ball, all the guitar work on there. And Killer Queen remains one of the all-time illest solos.
I don't agree with Spoon at all. I don't think that there are any guitar players that MUST be on anyones list. Just cuz someone can wail on an instrument, like Eddie Van Halen, doesn't mean everyone has to like it or think it's top noth. To a lot of people, Eddie's playing just seems like aimless, ostentacious wanking on the guitar. I feel that way. There isn't much soul to it, it lacks heart in my opinion. I like a little bit of Van Halen, but I'd much rather listen to the guitar work of Steve Malkmus, who I enjoy the guitar playing of a lot more, and therefore would say he's a better guitarist as far as his sensibilites and songcraft go, for my money. If "best guitarist" is very subjective, how can there be automatic entries?

Brian May. Good call. Love him. "Queen 2" is a great, great record. Captain Sensible rules. Dr. Know would be the one of the era for me personally.

Most of the Ten Years After stuff is blues-rock based jams. They had more than one simple personality however. "A Space in Time", the album probably best known, was something of a departure for them, and apparently a bit disappointing to the core fans who loved them for their live act. But that album does feature some lovely songs almost devoid of the scorching lead Lee is known for. As much as I like that disc, I prefer the live stuff. A couple years ago Chrysalis released a double disc, "Live at the Fillmore East 1970", which is just a gem. Twelve tracks in about 110 minutes, mostly blues-rock with a few Chuck Berry covers thrown in. Well produced, with the band totally on.
Recent years have seen quite a few releases of previously unavailable concert recordings by an assortment of these dinosaurs. Kooper/Bloomfield, Allman Brothers, Cream (BBC). And Zep's "How the West Was Won" definitely lives up to all the hype. Don't really listen to them all that often, given how my tastes have moved on, but we're lucky it's there for us. Really holds up well. |

Alvin Lee is indeed a scorching guitarist...if you listen to Ten Years After's "I'm Going Home" live at Woodstock, you will understand why.

Thanks for the Alvin Lee tips, perhaps now I'll dig a little deeper into that. While I'm here, I'll second a few nominations too:
Link Wray - I'm actually surprised only one person's mentioned him so far, although I can't agree with the idea that "Rumble" is the "beginning and the end of good rock music." Jeez...
D. Boon - for his approach to the craft more than his actual playing; he had the restraint to let my personal favourite bass and drums team provide the flash for the Minutemen. Quoth Mike Watt: "D. Boon was very political about the music. He wanted three fiefdoms, and nobody in the way. He thought the heavy guitar bogarted the bass."
Dick Dale - the only musician who I agree has earned his title as the king of anything. He was on TV last year and still does it better than anyone else.
Hendrix - I don't have anything special to say about him, but I can't not include the fact that he was the man, and a lefty to boot.
