Pixies Set North American Tour Dates, Announce Tracklist For Best-Of
Once-in-a-lifetime chance to see band play "Caribou" to actual caribou

[Posted Tuesday, February 10th, 2004 04:00:00 Pitchfork Central Time]

Will Bryant reports:
The Pixies will apparently play their first live gig in more than a decade in Bost-- wait. New York? Anaheim? Nope, make that Winnepeg, Manitoba on April 14th. Though undoubtedly more popular-- and indeed, heard of-- in populated areas, the reformed Pixies are blazing a decidedly road-less-traveled itinerary for their 12-date North American tour leading up to a headlining appearance at the Coachella Festival in Indio, CA on May 1st.

Most of the dates are in Canada-- giving Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia multiple-night engagements, with a handful of off-the-beaten-path U.S. stops (Spokane, Boise, Eugene, Davis) on the road to Indio. Interestingly, the band has booked two nights at Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom, the infamous site of the Pixies' final two gigs in April 1992.

New Musical Express reports that two London shows, at Brixton Academy June 2nd and 3rd, sold out "within minutes" of going on sale last week. The Pixies reunion saga thus far:

04-14 Winnipeg, Manitoba - Burton Cummings Theatre
04-15 Regina, Saskatchewan - Doris Knight Ballroom
04-17 Saskatoon, Saskatchewan - Prairieland
04-18 Edmonton, Alberta - Red's
04-19 Calgary, Alberta - MacEwan Hall
04-21 Victoria, British Columbia - Victoria Curling Club
04-22 Vancouver, British Columbia - Commodore Ballroom
04-23 Vancouver, British Columbia - Commodore Ballroom
04-24 Spokane, WA - Big Easy
04-25 Boise, Idaho - Big Easy
04-27 Eugene, OR - MacDonald Theatre
04-29 Davis, CA - Freeborn Hall
05-01 Indio, CA - Empire Polo Field (Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival)
06-02 London, England - Brixton Academy
06-03 London, England - Brixton Academy
06-12 Dublin, Ireland - Phoenix Park (w/ Red Hot Chili Peppers)
06-15 Paris, France - Parc des Princes (w/ Red Hot Chili Peppers)
07-10 Kinross, Scotland - T In The Park Festival (w/ David Bowie, The Darkness)

In other Pixies news, 4AD have announced the tracklist for their latest, 23-track survey of the Pixies catalog, Wave of Mutilation: Best Of The Pixies. The new compilation, which replaces the previous best-of Death To The Pixies, includes a handful of b-sides, alternate versions, and the group's cover of Neil Young's "Winterlong" in addition to the usual suspects. Tracklist:

01 Bone Machine
02 Nimrod's Son
03 The Holiday Song
04 Caribou
05 Broken Face
06 Gigantic [single version]
07 Vamos [Surfer Rosa version]
08 Hey
09 Monkey Gone To Heaven
10 Debaser [Doolittle version]
11 Gouge Away
12 Wave Of Mutilation
13 Here Comes Your Man
14 Tame
15 Where Is My Mind?
16 Into The White
17 Velouria
18 Allison
19 Dig For Fire
20 U-Mass
21 Alec Eiffel
22 Planet Of Sound
23 Winterlong [Neil Young]

Our previous Pixies stories covered most of the bases regarding 4AD's self-titled DVD retrospective, Pixies, which will include all the band's videos, a 1988 live show filmed at London's Town and Country Club, and the BBC documentary Gouge. The live show will be mixed for 5.1 surround as well as stereo, 4AD reports on their website. An "intimate assembly" of behind-the-scenes footage from the Pixies' 1989 European tour, On The Road, will round out the more than two-and-a-half-hour disctravaganza.

Nothing new there, other than apparently we're not good enough to have the Pixies here much less have heard of them, which is definitely news to me.

i think there is one error though - I thought the Gouge documentary was made by Channel 4 or 5 and not the BBC...

someone who's seen it might know.

not a biggy, but still.

Also, they seem convinced this is the North American tour as opposed to the warm-up tour. I don't know which channel put together the Gouge documentary so I didn't notice that.

Inquiring Minds Need to Know Dept.

If you have a gig at the Burton Cummings Theater, do you have to play "American Woman"??
Is there anything named after Randy Bachman??
