When I first heard a Pixies song (Broken Face)....it was 1987. My initial reaction was, 'did the Femmes go heavy and take on a chick?'....although I can honestly say that I have never seen it mentioned before, I really do think that the Violent Femmes exerted considerable influence on Chuck Thompson (it is plain as day if you listen to his pre-Pixie demos)[it is also worth noting that the Violent Femmes toured extensively to receiving followers up and down the New England college circuit from 82 to 85]....anyone else notice this?

To be honest, I thanked him not having ever talked to him. The resources on the website were invaluable though.

FB has never made any secret of the once-great Violent Femmes', particularly frontman Gordan Gano's influence on him
This has been discussed already in the short time that I've been here in a different section. Anyway, both Gano and FB were heavily influenced by Lou Reed/Velvet Underground, and I think this is another factor enhancing their occasional similarties.
Cheesman-- I have quickly skimmed your wonderful thesis. Unless I missed something, I think you need to rewrite it to properly address the Reed/VU influences.

I believe Frank joined Reed for a guest appearance on Gordon Gano's solo album. Though I heard of Violent Femmes years ago, the only song I really known is there infamous 'Blister In The Sun'. I think FB did say they were an influence before. |

The Violent Femmes were fabulous. now they're not.
but their first few albums were top-notch and i agree that franky must have been influenced in some way by their sound....

Frank listed "Gone DaddyGone" as one of his 10 favorite songs. I can't remember what magazine that article was in...

Agreed.
The Violent Femmes were one of my favorite groups until I saw them play live. It was such a disappointment.
There's a thread covering that someplace.

The violent femmes have been the best gigs I have been to!! I would recommend anyone see them live - absolutely fantastic, I know no one until reading the thread above that have said different. Also frank did indeed do a song with Gordon on his solo album. I attended an interview with Gordon where he said that frank had done a 'marvellous job' on the song. I also went to the first gig that Gordon did in Europe to promote the album. I am going to femmes in May, and then only a few short weeks before I go to see the pixies in phoenix park, Dublin!!!!!! Hopefully closer to the time they will announce another gig that they will headline.

Please don't tell me I need to rewrite my 1st-graded thesis, you don't know how long it took me. Also, I think you did miss something, if I remember aright. In the conclusion, I mentioned that I had looked at plenty more bands than those featured in the project, however, the link was too tenuous or whatever. I was trying to justify each inclusion with not only musical evidence but also quotes etc. Others like Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix and more were excluded, not because I don't think they were important to the Pixies, but because their wasn't sufficient support. Its one of the annoying things about writing a research project rather than an opinion-based work.

what was your thesis for mrcheese? i don't understand how the postgraduate system works over here, but was it a Honours, or a Masters, or something different?
i haven't had a chance to actually read yours, but i will.
i would post a link to my MSc titled "Responses of diatoms to the influx of tephra into lacustrine environments" but i don't think anyone would be that interested.

Woah now! Take it easy there Cheesy! I was not serious in suggesting you rewrite it. In any case, The Lou Reed/VU link is not tenuous. Two quick examples: 1) The lyrics to "I've been Tired" where Mr. Thompson just flat out says that he wants to be a singer like Lou Reed. 2) The slowed down, mellow break towards the end of "The Sad Punk" bears some stricking similarities to "I'll be your mirror" by the Velvet Underground.
I did not intend any disrespect. Even the most cursory reading of your thesis makes it painfully obvious that a lot of work went into it and I think it's just very very cool.

The Femmes are great, and they are great live. If anyone hasn't listened to them, you should check into it - its classic stuff! I am enjoying reading Cheeseman's thesis in my spare time. Thanks for posting it.

don't be too hard on yourself.... how long were you given to complete it? sorry, but i still haven't had a chance to read it yet.....
but i would think it would need to be expanded to have made it a Masters - atleast in NZ. our masters programs are 2.5 years long, with 1.5 to write your thesis... my thesis ended up 165 pages excluding appendices.
i gather it's quite different here in the UK.
you going onto postgraduate?

Thatīs where they were last time. Havenīt been to the Olympia in a couple years but if they still havenīt cleaned the place it should be appropriate.

I bought Come On Pilgrim when it came out because of a review that said it sounded 'like a cross between Violent Femmes and Talking Heads'. Still not sure if I agree but still, if it hadn't been for the VFs I may have missed out!
'Country Death Song' is one of the creepiest records ever. |

GAG!! PUKE!! It's bad karma to compare Pixies to Violent Femmes. Frank Black doesn't sound like a prissy cry-baby singing in a 69 Volkswagen Bug driving down a grated dirt road! God the VF's get on my nerves!!... I have to go puke some more! Thanks alot!

Whatever dude. That's cool if you don't like their music, but FB himself cites Gordan Gano of the Femmes as a major influence. It's very easy to hear vocal similarities between the two. And the Violent Femmes have some great fucking songs in my opinion. But like I said, whatever.
