Does anyone know what else was on the tapes? Other versions of songs from the first Frank Black album maybe? I know the Pixies covered "Hang On To Your Ego" at some stage, as it's on the Rough Diamonds bootleg (though compared to Frank's version, it is quite unexciting). |

The Pixies "Hang On To Your Ego" is actually an FB solo recording on a 4-track. It comes from the same session as "Is She Weird?" which appears on Pixies at the BBC. It's him and a drum machine. |

Johnny Malta has been playing relentlessly in California, AZ, TX and NM all summer. They have 2 more shows in the next 3 weeks, Zen on the 26th and at the Garage on Sep 3rd. As for the tape no word of it. But we talked about it at his last gig last monday. He mentioned that the original version of the Pixies' Surf Epic was also on there. Also, Master COntrol Studios in Burbank went out of business and in the liquidation they gave to him a Pixies' Gold Record that was issued to the studio for the sales of Bossanova and a Platinum record for Trompe Le Monde. But according to him he has nowhere to hang them. That is all I know.

Wow, I think you are the first to ask that question in the months that I have been here. But no, I am not Johnny. As a matter of fact, I met someone who use to post on Abstract Plain that can vouch for me. I was just answering the question for whoever posted previously regarding the tapes.

Live on, thread! Don't you want that stuff to see the light of day? The response to this thread might get noticed by somebody at 4AD or Frank or Ken Goes or whoever.. and someday maybe they'll put out a kick-ass 2CD Trompe Le Monde Deluxe Edition (like the recent Pavement Slanted & Enchanted, or the Sonic Youth Dirty sets).. containing a brilliantly remastered album, plus all the b-sides from the era, plus the legendary fabled outtakes from the recording sessions.. and in the liner notes it will say "special thanks to Switchy and the forum members who posted in the Petition: Lost Trompe Tapes! topic at frankblack.net for making this happen".. and we will be worshipped like Gods by Pixies fans everywhere.. and inspire within them that they, too can make a difference. |

That would be great. The could re-do Doolittle with the Demos found on "Give me Ecstacy" as well.
Surely Malta can't be the only person in existance with one of these tapes? Maybe there's a few sitting gathering dust in the 4AD archives? Anyone? Jo? |

Actually, that might be a bit pointless...this would be better: Combining Come on Pilgrim and the recent "rest of the purple tape" CD into the original Purple Tape with the original Track order, and packaging that with the Doolittle Demos. |

Here are some principle points detailing why the so-called "lost tapes" will probably never be made available to the general public.
Trompe le Monde is widely regarded as being one of the weaker Pixies albums. Charles, 4AD, etc. in all likelihood are aware of this and have no interest in digging up half-assed Pixies artifacts dating from that album's sessions and releasing them to appease what is essentially a fringe-market of the most devoted Pixies fans.
The sole proof that these tapes even exist lies in a few short song excerpts posted on some guy's website. Not one bootleg of the recordings that these soundbites were culled from has come to light since the date they were put on the site. This could mean that whoever has the tapes in his/her possession is a human packrat, or it could mean that the tapes have simply been lost or destroyed. Furthermore, the fact that the soundbites came from an outside source diminishes the chance that the tapes are within reach of official hands, so a petition meant to catch the collective eye of Charles, 4AD, and other relevant parties would probably be fruitless.
This is why I say "fuckin die, thread!". That and the conspicuous Malta band-plugging. |

sorry, I'm the only Beggars Group person I know of who comes to this forum (although I sent Steve in backcat some links last week), and something like that, although a fantastic idea (I LOVE the Slanted reissue) is highly unlikely to happen...
I'm not aware of any Trompe tapes knocking around - I know we have lots of Pixies tapes, although as far as I'm aware, its just the normal stuff that got released by 4ad.... |

any rare material by the pixies is bound to be enlightening to frank black fans too. by the time of TLM he was working on his solo album anyway.
