Oh my! I'm pretty sure it was a SuperBowl commercial...But I don't watch football...so I just saw this commercial tonight and it's brilliant! For those of you who haven't seen it yet:

http://www.pepsi.com/ads_and_history/index.php

Click on the Crossroads commercials...you can figure it out from there...or atleast I'd hope so.

Oh jeeze...the accordian...fucking brilliant.

Couldn't they have gotten at least a TAD closer to the legacy, though? I mean, of all things, it coulda been a Strat in the window, not a Tele. Did he ever even play a Tele? Maybe at some point...I know he played a Mustang at some point. I'm so geeky.

I love it when soda companies dilute legends in the name of selling more pop.

PEPSI = ROCK N ROLL = WOO-HOO!

Frankly, the commercial was so tasteless and flat, it made me want to buy Coke.

Even though I'm not too fond of Pepsi, I will now drink it since Jimi Hendrix was in the commercial, even though I'm not all that fond of Jimi Hendrix either.

It doesn't bother me that I've never been able to have it in me to worship Jimi. His guitar playing and his songs just never spoke to me the way they do to so many others. I never disliked his work, but because it was heralded as being so great, I was a bit disappointed when I finally heard a lot of his work and wasn't exactly moved by it. There are plenty of other bands where I think, "Yeah, that's alright, nothing I'd really get into" but don't think, "Shouldn't I like this more than I do?" since they aren't universally recognized as being great. With Jimi, I'm sure many people would say, "You don't like music if you don't like Jimi." Yeah, just cuz I don't really get into one musician, that means that I don't like all these other bands and songs, either. I'm sure a lot of my favorite guitarists were heavily influenced by Hendrix, and I can appreciate Hendrix through these guitarists and how he influenced them. And maybe someday I'll realize how much Jimi rocks. I mean, I love watching him play. I find that I get into it more when I'm watching Jimi play the guitar. The live performances usually strike me a bit more. But I've just never had a Jimi Hendrix phase. Maybe someday. Maybe not.

All you need to hear is the near-7 minute instrumental of "Little Wing," and all will be clear. I can understand though. There was a point when I didn't think he was "all that great," but when you really dive into his music and truely experience it, the answer becomes clear. The guitar was an extention of his soul...nobody has since played guitar like him, and basicly everyone after him was trying to *be* him, and they'll admit to it. He was the real deal man, the real deal...it wasn't about the mechanics of playing the guitar...it's just, he DID it, and everything he did was simple fucking beautiful. Seriously though, you have to hear this version of Little Wing...you'll understand after you hear it.

Yeah, he was great at guitar, like the fucking greatest. He expanded the realm of what everyone could do with the guitar...but beneath all that technical shit, this guy had more soul and life in him than anyone could even comprehend. He was a supernova. A million times brighter but destined to burn out as soon as he lit.

El Barto knows of what he speaks.

Hmmm.. There's no video of Jimi ever drinking a pepsi, *yet* there is video/film of a coke at his feet (still not drinking it though). This commercial was done just for the $$$$. As for Jimi being the best guitarist ever? That's a personal call but it seems all too clear to me. No one else even comes close.

There is only one guitarist better than Jimmy Hendrix... and that's Jimi Hendrix

I understand what you mean Jim,
but hey, look at the history of the stratocaster:

(somewhere on the web):
The Stratocaster has a unique history. Leo Fender started designing the Stratocaster in 1953.

The commercial takes place in 1953, it would be an even greater mistake to have a stratocaster in it. Since there were no ''real'' strats around then. (maybe some prototypes)
