Okay. Just to make this clear: I think the movies were very well done, but just hear me out.

#1. Okay...where'd the credit going for these films? Jackson. I'd really like to see "J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings" instead of making it seem like it was a revolutionary new idea. Give the man some credit. He was a fucking genius.

#2. There are pictures from the film in the books now. Okay, the genius of books compared to movies is that it's different for every person. You can skulpt the book to your extreme likings thanks to a little friend called imagination. I didn't see Elijah Wood when I was thinking of Frodo. I don't know about you, but the visualisations that I had for the story were much better than any movie. Just imagine: "Look! Lord of the Rings! Isn't that based on a movie, though?" from little kids. I guarantee it already has happened and that it will continue happening thanks to the huge exposure the films have gotten.

#3. This applies to number 2, so bare with me. What happened to our imaginations? Since kids are going to see the movies long before reading the books they're going to read it with their mind infested with Jackson's vision of the story. It happens with every book. Atleast there's the Silmarillion and the Hobbit left for our minds to wonder through without being forced to think of Orlando fucking Bloom.

#4. "Oh but they'll be able to read the books without ever thinking about the movie!" Bullshit. Our minds don't work that way, unfortunately. Read into the subconcious mind.

#5. Once again: Give the man some respect. I bet Mr. Tolkien is just rolling in his grave right now thanks to all of the marketing shit that's revolved around this. (Happy Meal toys...my god. Poor man.)

Okay...that's my say on the subject. Once again: I'm glad that Jackson was the one to do the movies since anyone else would do an even worse job. The acting is good, the special effects are good, yeah yeah yeah blablabla. I just pity the future generations who won't have the same experience from reading the books as me. Mine was even more epic and wondrous than the movies. I'm sure it was the same for you thanks to how it was written. Hate me now? Tell me. Comment all you want.

Indeed, I love the movies, but while they stick to all the little details of the books, there were some awkward changes made....then again, to make them work as movies, a little licence was obviously required. Oh, well. Ironically, the extended editions, while intended for fans, actually EXPLAIN some things that probably mystified casual viewers of the original versions: for example, the scene in the extended Two Towers where Gandalf assures Gimli that Merry and Pippin are safe in the company of Treebeard.

Treebeard is the man. He was like my favorite character in all of the books. So cool.

Crouton - I agree with pretty much all your points. I still enjoy the films (the extended versions) a great deal, though... as far as fantasy book conversions to cinema, this one takes the cake.

Yeah, how can human beings possibly play elves and hobbits...?

I think that it should be forbidden for little kids to see the movie before reading the book.

Isn't this just an interpretation of the books? I loved the books and was thrilled to have Jackson bring it to film. And he is not acclaimed with writing the story, just with doing such a fantastic job of porting it to a different medium. I'd like to see Tolkien more prominently mentioned, even in the title shot, but you'd have to be living under a rock in Siberia with your ears frozen shut and eyes gouged away to not know that the books came first.

I agree entirely on the crappy marketing. But I love the movies, and they enhanced the books for me quite a bit even though I've read the books several times each.

Well, as an example, I never really thought of Gollum as being torn in two as Smeagol & Gollum (good/evil). Which now seems so obvious that I'm almost ashamed to admit it, but I really liked that interpretation since it complements the general theme of the story so well.

Lots of people I know that don't read (gasp) much if at all have also given these books a chance after seeing the movie which isn't my preferred order, but if it gets them reading then I'm more than pleased.

Cult has'nt replied yet, so let me throw my 2 cents into the hat...NO. But they did bring Tolkien's world to life beautifuly;actually, Gollum probably was a little bit more vivid in the movies.

The movies seem to do what they can in the time frame they must be presented in. It took me several weeks to read all the books, and to capture all the details you would almost need to do 3 movies per book. This was a hell of a project to take on, and to me, the overall feel was captured pretty well.

As for Tolkien getting credit- isn't that a given?? Maybe if somebody was not aware of the books it would be somewhat of an issue. You can bet his estate didn't mind when they got that first check.

Originally, Miramax were gonna make 'em, but just as 2 movies...and they wanted to cut out Moria, among other things! I think they're portrayal of the boa constrictor was inacurate...the one in the book is non-pois...oh,sorry.

I agree with Msr Crouton on more points than I thought I would.
In general, the films could have been done a lot worse, and that would have been a total travesty, so we have that to be thankful for.
I definitely agree with the whole 'visualising in your mind' thing, the books are some of the best literature for that. However, I was impressed by how much of the films looked how I'd imagined it. Not the hobbits, but a lot of other stuff. Give Tolkein his due for creating such vivid descriptions that they imply such graphic portrayals to different people, and give Jackson his due for realising them so well. I'll particularly agree with Gollum, I thought that was superb: I really don't like CGI usually, but that was fantastically.
My only quibbles with the movies were that they had to miss out a bunch of stuff, although I guess they had no choice. Like the elves leading Gimli blindfold through Lorien: that wouldn't have taken much effort would it? And no Tom Bombadil? Denied! At least I still have my mental image of him, the cheeky little leprechaun type chap.

Well, they obviously couldn't put EVERYTHING in the movies, although there was stuff I would have liked to have seen, like Saruman's takeover of the Shire (mentioned in another thread on LOTR, I believe). I think they're pretty loyal as far as they go, though. Most book-to-movie adaptations I've seen were much less loyal.

Agreed - I pray for the rest of the soul of Philip K. Dick. Blade Runner was cool, but why they said it was based on "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" I don't quite get - it's like saying a peanut butter and jelly is based on a chicken sandwich. Both movies, both sandwiches. See? I like sandwiches.

Then there's the others....Total Recall, Minority Report, etc...blech.

I agree, Carl. I saw Minority Report about a week ago (rented it when I was in the mood for dumb action I didn't have to think through) and was very impressed (except for the fact that it was more intelligent than I was really in the mood for, which is a minor complaint). It's too bad most of Spielberg's other crap is such feel-good cheese

I pity any person who has been born after this completely contrived, unorginal, utterly boring trilogy has been written and published. Total crap. And now that the worst trilogy ever has been made into movies for anyone to easily get the story (by a director who thinks he's so much more important and hip than he is), well, goddamn, it's just a matter of time before the fall of civilization. It's a damn shame.
