I wanted to put this on Dean's list, but I think that Italian comics deserve their own thread. Maybe most of you have never heard of these, but some of the Italian comics from the 70s and 80s are certainly the best I've ever seen.

Probably the best, and certainly my favorite is Alan Ford, it's a story of a group of caricatural and ridiculous secret agents (called TNT). It is one of the most hilarious things I have ever read.

Then, I think that the Frank Black fans should all LOVE Martin Mystery. It is much like X-Files, except the fact Martin is more like an adventurer (unlike the sad workaholic that is Fox Mulder). There are many stories about ancient civilisations, UFOs, men in black atc. Martin even discovered a Neandertal man who became his best friend and his bodyguard, Java.

Finally, the most scary one would be Dylan Dog, which inspired a movie called De la Morte dell Amore (I hated the movie). It's a private detective specialized in paranormal things, the stories usually take place in cemeteries or psychiatric hospitals. When I was a little boy, I would ask my parents if I could sleep with them after reading Dylan Dog.

If you've already heard of those, tell me what you think about it. Otherwise, try and discover it, you won't regret it!

here are some of my favorites:

the "Helga" series.. an incisive critique about gun violence as seen through the Civil War, only set in Italy..

"Bonnie" - a profound meditation on death and the afterlife, masquerading as a gangster story..

"Corna Vissute" - a cautionary tale about bathroom hygene.

I see Mr Floop has a refined taste....but you forgot the greatest erotic comic ever, and again it's an Italian : MANARA!!!!

Oh, and Carolynanna, I apologize but my very limited knowledge of English doesn't include the word (or acronym) T&A. Could you please give me a short definition of T&A. By doing this you would :

- make me a smart and self-fulfilled person
- enable me to (eventually) give you an answer.

Thank you for your understanding.

Oh my god, Carolynanna, I am outraged!

I always had this picture of you as a pure and innocent young woman...and I hear you speaking as a truck driver.

Where did that blond hair go?
Where is the girl I used to know?
....
Oh Carolyn, no !

This is probably a stupid question but are those strips in Italian or are they just Italian made? I dig the art though. very cool.

You're familiar with these comics, Mun Chien? Aren't they great?

I think Alan Ford has not been translated into English. In France they only released something like the first five...

Wouaouh, I'm impressed, I thought nobody knew about these comics. I could dedicate my whole life to reading these three. And drinking milk. I would make some some exercise twice a week. It would be a nice life.

Funny, Dylan Dog is the only one of these three to have a sexual life, actually.

i haven't actually read any of the comics i posted, but i know they are Italian and in Italian. i'm just a fan of Italian poster art in general (and some comics).. though i like poster art from other countries as well, it seems like the Italian stuff is by far the best (which makes sense, since Italians are the best)..

Sylvio Berlusconi (Italian Prime minister) is the funniest person in the world. I would like to have a lunch with him at least once. I'm sure he makes jokes all the time. He is even funnier than George Bush. Once, during a meeting with several officials including Gerhard Schroeder (German Kanzler) he said :

"Politics is so boring, let's talk about football. And women. I know a couple of things about women. But I'm sure some of you know even more. Gerhard, it's your fourth wife. You must be an expert."

Gerhard didn't find it very funny. I did.

realmanmoterscutor, i could tell you, but then i'd have to kill you.

actually, most of those are from ebay.. but if you bid against me on anything, then i will have to kill you.

a guy i work with is REALLY into collecting posters, and he kind of got me into it, but not to his level of insanity. everyone in my office has bought a bunch of stuff and it's kind of gotten out of hand. but in a good way.

though not Italian, i recently purchased these posters, which i'm quite proud of:

FUEGO (need one say more?)

LA MANO QUE APRIETA (haven't seen it, but is this not a cool poster?)

FRUTA SEXUAL DEL CARIBE (i got it really cheap. couldn't resist. i may have to take this one down when my parents and 2 year old nephew come visit though)

EL MONSTRUO LE LOS VOLCANES (Spanish poster about a Mexican abominable snowman. yes please)

Oh yeah, La Dottoresa. That rocks. Reminds me of my 18th birthday. I spent it in a hospital, because of an allergy due to pennicillin. All the nurses were so nice to me because they found out it was my birthday. Especially one of them, no more than 24, a very cute little blonde whose thong I could easily identify through her white dress, especially when she would pick up something from the floor. Unfortunately, our relationship remained verbal and visual. What a pity.

Do you own all these posters? I used to have these Russ Meyer's Super Vixen posters...great stuff, I must admit.

i don't own DOTTORESA, sadly. but i do (now) own the other four i posted above, which is four more than i can afford really.

i've got an old FASTER PUSSYCAT, KILL KILL! poster somewhere.. also good stuff. yeah, i'm not a hardcore collector or anything. just an amateur i guess.. but i do appreciate interesting poster art, which, when it comes to the 60's and 70's Italian stuff, you usually can't go wrong with. especailly the horror and sci-fi stuff. this guy i work with is FUCKing hardcore though.. he's the one who sucked me into it.. he's got original copies of CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON and ATTACK OF THE 50 FT WOMAN that are worth $5,000 each. i mean, he's got a vault. literally.

anyway, long live Italy!

(adnan, i'm sorry your relationship didn't blossom with that nurse.. you can always try and get some dangerous illness again and give it another shot)
