Weird - one winter in Chicago they said it was -70 Fahrenheit. And I believe it, 'cause I froze to the bus stop, and my snot froze while it was still inside my sinuses (well, not that part, but I did freeze to the sidewalk). FUN! Stay alive CoF. I'm working on my telekinesis "fireplace teleport". Lemmee know when you're feelin it!

Is it working yet? Oh man, sorry about that creepy guy - where'd he come from?

edit: The page width was a nuisance, so I made that creepy guy in the fireplace smaller - sorry for any irritation.
edit 2: hey! that was useless! crap. I am like David Spade without Chris Farley, alone and useless.

No -remember? You licked my boots, and the latent heat melted the snow and it refroze and there I was stuck to the sidewalk, shaking like a spaz, trying to break free. I _told_ you never to lick my boots in public. Makes you look like a real wanker.

I feel it, I feel it!!!

Oh, wait, that's just the space heater under my desk to keep my office habitable.

Yesterday, my parking brake froze on, so I backed out and couldn't move forward (even though I'd had my car running already for 15 mins). I sat there revving the engine for another 5 mins and it finally released and I started to drive. Well, the tires had frozen with a flat spot, being parked overnight in the cold. So it was like driving with square wheels. Bump-a-bump-a-bump. They finally worked their way round on the way to work... then lunchtime comes around and the aluminium rims had contracted enough that when I put it in reverse the seals popped on two tires and so they were nice and flat.

Anyway, it's been interesting. But I've never frozen in place before, I gotta' say... :)

Hey apl, was that '93? I lived in Wisconsin at the time and it was 80 below--I too remember the snotsicles. Eww!

Stay warm, Dean! I hope your car survives the ordeal. Maybe you could click your heels three times and say, "There's no place like home!'

I don't know much about Wisconsin, and have no concept of how cold -70/80 is in Fahrenheit, but I know the saving grace here is that it's very dry. Throw humidity into the mix and, well, gross. I suppose it's not even possible for there to be humidity at this temperature though, so it was probably just nice and foggy.

No, I think it was '98 or somewhere in there - it's possible that I suffered mild effects of hypothermia, 'cause I don't remember much at all of that winter. Btw, I love Wisconsin! We even spent our honeymoon there. Great people too.

CoF, -70/80 Fahrenheit is -56/-62 C, but I'm guessing you know that, and want to rub it in that we're stuck in a measurements time warp down here.

It was the winter of '96, I remember seeing -24F on the way home one night. I believe the wind chills got to -60F something...

Heh, apl, nah, I was just to lazy to do the conversion myself. 5/9+32 or some such thing. I've actually never used F for anything in sciences (thermodynamics, phyiscs, materials, etc), nor for real life, so without that conversion I only know that it's probably pretty col, that's all I was sayin'. And that you're in a time warp. :)

We've all gone soft here in the UK. A bit of snow, -5 degrees and the media go on about it like the next ice age is almost upon us.

Pathetic.

Same for France. There was something like 1 cm of snow (convert it into inches if you can) and they are almost saying it is a natural disaster. I've just spent a year in Sweden, where it was way colder, so I find this panic really funny.

My ex-girlfriend lives in NYC and she told me it was something like - 50°C, which is colder than Sweden (I've been 200 km north from the Arctic Circle, and the temperature was - 45 °C).

Hell, it's really scary, North America is really a dangerous place (with all these serial killers). I'm so happy to be European.

haha , yeah, totally. Were not used to all this sort of 'extreme' weather. I mean, ive seen people with pots of salt, just so as to put on the ice incase they slip. English are so terrified of public humiliation, well take ay measures to avoid it!!

Wow... it's almost summer here by comparison (-5°C). Maybe you should come here and ask for asylum as a meteorological refugee? I'd be pleased and honored to welcome you.

yeah, English people suck in cold weather - well actually, all of England sux in the cold.
it's phenomenal that the public transport and highway system just cannot deal with the slightest bit of snow and/or cold weather.
it's abysmal.

I was out for an hour and a half last night trying to start my dad's truck with a propane heater, but to no avail. And then I had a flat (probably as a result of Wednesday's fiasco) on the way to work and the gas station I hobbled to no longer provides air. Sons of bitches. It's only 9 AM and already I'm having a horrible day... the good part is that this means something good should be coming my way to compensate. Ideally.

Frog, I've actually sent in meterological refugee papers but they are still doing checks. I hope to see 'ya and various other denizens (seriously) in 2005 though, I'm coming over to Europe for a year or so.

Quebec (a province of Canada) is looking into mandatory snow tires in the winter. Sure, it's not related to the thread, but I thought it was funny and had to post it somewhere:

I htought you had to speak French in Quebec - so what's with the English road signs?

But seriously, this is crazy:
"The coroner's report into his death recommended that the government require drivers to put winter tires on all vehicles during the snowy months."

Since when do coroners make suggestions about legislation to government in their autopsy/death reports? Wow - now that's what I call Big Government hahahah!

French must be (by really sad legislation) dominant in Quebec, but English is still permitted and used as long as it's less than 50%. And yeah, my cousin and I were talking about this last night and I didn't believe her when she told me the coroner was involved in this new legislation. Hilarious!

Yeah -seriously! Another creepy side-note: our cat scratches at the basement door evry night before we are about to go to bed. The thing is, when we have tornado warnings (which there are far too damn many of around this crappy state), and we have to take her into the basement -she wigs out! When we finally decided to let her go down there last night, she walked down 2 steps and ran back up like a bat outa hell. WTF? Too much like "Amityville Horror" for my tastes.

Speaking of brrr.... that sends chills down my back. Up my back? Well, I haven't determined their direction, but they're moving. Still, if you haven't had any problems then I guess it's probably something else down there that your cat's not fond of.
