Just thought I'd let you all know to be careful with this latest virus going around. I don't know about anyone else but I've had it sent to me about 5 or 6 times now. Be cautious over any sort of email attachment, you don't want to infect yourself. Check this Wired article for more details:

Well I'm gonna go play halo, then maybe use some of the thousands of freeware programs available for PC, then maybe install some new hardware. Heck, I might even use non-proprietary parts! And I might even open my cd-drive by the button on it to put the disc in. And hey, after having all that fun, I might defragment my hard drive and not have it deteriorate into a pile of user-friendly trash. |

As a PC user, I've done all of the above and never had a virus. Why? Because being an M$ user has prepared me. I am suspicious of everything computer-related. Each piece of email I get is scrutinized. Every cookie is from a known source or rejected. Maybe the most wonderful thing about being a PC user is having allegiance to no one. We hate M$ almost as much as we hate Mac, but at least we know what to expect from them and how to deal with it.

Just tell me one thing a mac can do better than a PC (I'm not talking theoretically, I mean g5 compared to p4 EE 3.6 ghz, raw numbers.). Also, I built my computer for $250! That would buy me what? A 512 meg stick of mac ram? pfft. And you can't overclock macs, that's just boring. |

It's just that I got tired of working on computers, so I got one that does work for me instead. I barely have time to sleep, much less mess around with stuff that needs overclocking. I'll probably never open up a computer case again as long as I live. Hmmm, I happen to like that thought.

It's almost always the Mac users who start these discussions (arguments) because they think we give a fuck. |

So...Im debating about getting a laptop. I was thinking of getting a Mac one, because I am studying media, and the editing facilities available on a mac are exactly what I need...Im not aware of any stuff that can do that on a PC? Im guessing youll all gonna say I shoudnt get a mac, but why? what exactly is the difference? PLease, no tech talk, because I have no idea about any thing computer related!!!
SO, Mac or Toshiba? And is there any pc editing soft ware the equivalent of 'final cut pro'????
The only advantage I can clearly see from PC is that EL Barto can fix it for me when i no doubt break it! hahaha.

You open the cd-drive with the keyboard on a Mac.
The PC vs Mac animosity phenomenon baffles the shit out of me.
They both have their good points. They both have security flaws. The Mac is great for high-end music, video and graphics applications, which is why I own one, but yes, it is more expensive. I couldn't care less about what the fuck color it is or how prettily everything fits together. It -does- run smoother, for the most part, and I know, because I've been a PC/Windows user (and fucking fixed them all the damn time for a living) at the same time for just as long. All tolled, both give me just as many headaches, for a plethora of reasons. Why the animosity? I just wanna get along....

Gypsy, far be it from me to decide which path you should take (the "dark side" or "the other dark side"), but if you are going to be getting seriously into editing media -I'm assuming this is video/mutimedia?- then depending on your budget, and your access to marked-down or "free" software (via school and more creative routes), I would recommend going for the Mac laptop, but I defer to those who have actually owned one to let you know how well they like it (or not).

Hold on a second... you're telling me that if you've got a MAC this virus is not dangerous? If that's true, it's a great news: I've been bombarded for 3 days by these stupid emails, and I couldn't figure out whether I had been infected or not... |

Halo is available for Mac too (game is actually based on an old Mac game Marathon). Also, lots of freeware stuff for the Mac (www.macupdate.com). I've dropped in different video-cards and upgraded my processors on my different Macs over the years. This whole propriety stuff is a load of crap. Microsft is just as propriety (WMA? and soon XML?). Lastly, the HFS+ file system is known not to have problems with disk fragmentation (even less of a problem with OS X and journaling enabled). I could care less what platform people use, just don't like the ignorance. |

I get the impression that Mac users tend to be quite loyal to their computers. I don't know whether owning a Mac results in that kind of loyalty, or people like that are just more likely to buy a Mac in the first place. It's kind of a chicken and the egg thing, I guess.

There is something about the OS that grows on you after a while. Maybe it is just the little smiling Apple computer icon (when all is well with the system) at boot? It's taken me a while to get along with OS X, now I love it even more than system 9. As soon as I feel like I've got the free time, I'm gonna start exploring the Unix capabilities more. That is, after I upgrade to OS 10.3 (Panther) tomorrow. I just wish the graphics apps weren't so pricey, but that has more to do with the near-monopoly that Adobe has enjoyed in that realm until recently. Anybody else a Panther user? Any gripes?

I use 10.3 at work and I don't have any complaints. It's great in a work environment with mulitple users.
At home, I'm still using 10.2. The only reason I know for sticking with 10.2 is that you can still boot up in 9. 10.3 won't let you do that. I have some games at home that won't run in the classic environment, but will when running 9.2.
The ability to run UNIX programs, to answer MangyKid, is another thing Mac does better than PC.
I have to admit though that my wife just bought a new PC and the thing cost about a 1/3 of what a similar Mac would have cost. As PCs have become more similar to Macs it becoming harder to justify the price difference. |

If I can say one good things about macs, its that they have the game spelunx. Damn that was a good game. I haven't used macs much since the old powerpcs and the first imacs, and I know they had serious fragmentation problems then. Just trying to save a game in SimTown was insane! And I don't like windows either, especially anything other than 2000, it's just that pcs are so much cheaper and easier. Hell, I didn't even pay for my copy of 2000, I downloaded it! Same for halo (which is produced by microsoft. odd, though they did put out age of empires for mac), need for speed underground, star wars kotor, and all the other games I get for free. Plus photoshop for free, all that jazz.
I hear Avid is good for video editing, thats for pc and just recently mac. I only encode things, not much editing. Virtual dub for everything else, (great free encoding app for windows only) and TMPGEnc for vcds (not sure on this one).
I just don't really understand why people would get a mac over a pc, other than being unfamiliar with PCs. But not everyone is a computer maven, so macs do have their place. I guess for video and stuff it's tough to say, but you could get plenty more hard drive space and ram for less money with a pc.
And macs do use proprietary parts, comparatively speaking. And no shit, every different OS has different proprietary software. And you can play WMAs on mac, so don't know what you're talking about there. Maybe you can't encode it on mac, but who would want to? I remember when there were different kinds of 3 1/2" diskettes for pc and mac, that was just stupid. You can put in new parts, but you can't just slap in any old card as long as it's PCI (or ISA for the older mobos out there) and have it work. Hardware is still ludicrously expensive.
Point is, with macs you don't really get what you pay for in terms of flexibility and power. honestly 512 megs of ddr333 costs $200 on the apple site. I'm not sure if any ddr333 would work, but I got 256 megs for $35... I suppose it doesn't matter if you just throw money around like a gangsta and don't care about games, but whatever G.
And the iPod mini? ......c'mon |

Well, as long as you're downloading (I assume this is not through some preferred partner licensing with the vendor) all your software, it doesn't really matter which platform you use.
I use a Windows XP box, but I covet a Mac. I love Unix, love Linux, and OSX is based on the FreeBSD Mach/Openstep kernel, with the stability and ergonomics of the Aqua interface. If you wanna bitch about lack of free software, those days are long gone under OSX, as the entirety of the Open Source movement is available to you (and to linux, and windows, etc). http://www.freshmeat.net, www.objectweb.net and www.sourceforge.net" target="_blank">http://www.sourceforge.net are sources of most of the applications I use for my job. For nothing. And it's legal. Generally pretty cool stuff there too.
As for Mac/PC editing, they are pretty damn near equivalent. Adobe ports pretty much everything to both platforms. Most A/V digitizers are USB2 or Firewire compatible and cross platform.
Macs do great at games, due to the optimization for sound and graphics, but with computing speeds these days it really doesn't matter anymore. They cost about the same for each platform. the ATA interface is across both Platforms now. Hell, even Sun uses the PCI bus in their Sparc servers. The days of religious wars are nearing an end. Use the right tool for the job...

Minor point, but one would have to be silly to buy RAm from the apple site. It can be found much cheaper elsewhere. |

Avid was actually exclusively a mac program until recently. now it's available for Windows.
The full Avid program is way too expensive and unnecessary for small projects. it's the industry standard for feature films and whatnot though..
but Avid does have a very comparable program to Final Cut Pro called Avid Xpress, which is available for mac or pc. so, if you really wanted to get a pc you could get Avid Xress (also, i know that they offer a student discount)..
but.. Final Cut Pro is fast becoming the norm.. and competing heavily with Avid, even in the feature film world. so it's not a bad program to know.
that's my 2 cents. |

All I know is, this ibook has been in the shop 3 times, 1 of which they didn't even attempt to fix it and their cutomer service is like 6am to 6pm mon-fri (if I remember right) which is really annoying. I've had it less than 2 years. Another frustrating thing is that it just stops when I'm trying to do stuff all the time. This spinning rainbow ball just sits there.. it seems slower than my old 500mhz celeron pc. I don't think I'll get another one, I like idvd though. |

On the flipside, my brand spanking fucking new Compaq Evo 2.4GHz laptop from work has some wacky issue where randlom keystrokes won't register, and browsers tend to freeze up everything after about an hour of use, and is slower than my older windows laptop, which was half the CPU speed. Let me tell you how happy it makes me to be in a hurry trying to IM my boss and it comes across like "i trd t gt tme to met wih yo" or some shit. Brilliant. He already hates me, now he thinks I'm retarded too. I'm gonna put RedHat on it and be done with it.

On the other hand, the rods on my abacus are starting to corrode after only 130 years of use. And don't even mention my IM device-- the string keeps popping out the bottom of one of the plastic cups. |
