My parents relate the tale of Pink Floyd being the only thing I would pay attention to at the age of 2. My first 45 was Blondie's "Rapture". By 5 I was a Devo junkie thanks to a relative with taste. I also remember scaring the crap out of my highly religious aunt at the age of 8 singing Dead Kennedys' "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" without realizing that was all that bad, especially in mixed company. Dr Demento's radio show was a staple. At 12 I was skating to Black Flag, Social Distortion, and the Beastie Boys and chilling out with Zepplin and Hendrix. Then when I was 14 I was introduced to the Dead Milkmen by the woman who is now my wife (She made me listen to the Dead Milkmen! How cool is that!!). That led me into the Butthole Surfers, Jane's Addiction, a blue freaking million indy and punk bands at all the $5 all-ages shows. Punk goes into Industrial and then I start listening to bluegrass and Cuban music just to fuck with my personality a little. I came to the Pixies and FB later in life, having somehow missed them the first time around. I still pretty much listen to eveything I have my whole life, just folding in new things.
<edit> Oh yeah - and lots of Blues too - Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson in particular. Not sure when that started though... I looked for a cult to join, then decided to just play "Sink". Hey! I sank WallaWalla Washington! |

Spudboy, you must check out Son House. Muddy and Robert were inspired by him. Original Delta Blues is a great album. Here it is cheap! this a great website by the way. http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?PAGE=PROFRAME&PROD_ID=238430

I got into Bowie at 15 as well - for a while I literally didn't listen to anything else. The great thing about a youthful Bowie fixation is the wonders you uncover for the first time just by checking out artists Bowie's worked with (Iggy, Lou Reed, Mott The Hoople etc) and then people who were contemporaries (Roxy, T Rex, Sparks etc)and all the people he was influenced by along the way. A very rich seam indeed. |

Actually, KoK, I know Son House's music very well but thanks for the recommendation - I second it to the uninitiated. I regularly sing "John the Revelator" at top volume in traffic. I get to work faster then others in the summer.

When I was six, my big brother had copies of "Help" and "Sgt Pepper" which I listened to constantly, (along with 45s of "Satisfaction" and "Get off of My Cloud") as well as Three Dog Night! He also played in a garage band called (get this) The Kinetic Reason, that played for high school hops and community 4th of July celebrations. Being the little sister of the cute guitar player got me plenty of free candy and favors from soon-to-be-groupies, so I have wonderfuly memories of this era and to this day live for Nuggets comps. By 4th grade, bro had discovered Led Zeppelin (and had to explain to me what a Zeppelin was and why it was therefore absurd to have one made of lead....). On my own, OK, OK, I had a David Cassidy thing going, but after all the buildup and hype in Tiger Beat, remembering how disappointingly lame the music was once I heard it. That got me over to Elton John (Yellow Brick Road era), Bachman Turner Overdrive, etc. Ted Nugent (Cat Scratch Fever) was high on my list as well, and as a band nerd, I had the first six Chicago albums. By high school I'd discovered prog and had the entire catalog of Yes, ELP and King Crimson. (again, favorites of band nerds). (actually nerds of all kinds). Then came that fateful night my senior year when I saw DEVO on SNL perform their version of "Satisfaction" (full circle, eh) and everything changed. By college, I'd sold that whole catalog of YEs, ELP and King Crimson, not only to pay the rent, but lest my new hip music friends into the Pistols, the Cramps and Elvis Costello learn of my deep dark secrets....

age-band liked -------------- 13-Depeche Mode 14-Nirvana (anything SubPop) 15-Primus 16-Smashing Pumpkins 17-Shudder to Think 18-Self 19-All ........ .... . now - about 5 albums of 300 I own, I actually can tolerate. I'll adopt a new band every now and then. These include: Frank Black, Clem Snide, Elliott Smith, Damian Rice....

That's very true andyn - my experience was very similar in that respect (Bowie leading to Iggy, the Velvets, Roxy Music etc...)

Honestly, I didn't really have that much of my own music until my college years. I remember listening to some Disney song tape quite a bit when I was really young, and I had a few Beatles tapes and Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits when I was older. I was also REALLY into Weird Al in high school, and I still like him, but I don't listen to him anywhere near as much as I did back then.
