I heard about this in the recent rolling stone and i started looking up stuff about it. its nothing short of unbelievable that people havent figured out whats down there by now, after 200 or so years of trying. Its a kind of long article, but if you have time defintily read it. It's probably the most interesting thing ive read in years.

I remember hearing about this years ago. It's crazy how much trouble someone went to to make it hard to get into that pit

There was a one-hour documentary about this on one of the educational cable stations (Discovery, TLC, or History). Keep an eye out for it. |

As an eerie side note...
What if what they were trying to bury is horrible? Some sort of horrible secret that would kill us all or send humankind into a state of panic which they would never be able to leave till they died?
What if they devised so long ago, some sort of pit and booby trap and elaborate burial system thinking surely NO ONE would be able to ever release what they had managed to bury??
Maybe never in their still somewhat primitive minds they never IMAGINED a day when there would be machines that could realease and recover what they died trying to keep from the rest of humanity????
Would make a great M. Night Shymalan movie wouldn't it? |

What if it's like, JESUS CHRIST HIMSELF, buried in there? I'D BELIEVE! I agree, they need some rich guy to dump money into finding what this thing is...

Hey GoddesTheory, I suggest you send your application to James Cameron. Perhaps you will get rich beyond your wildest dreams...

I think he already made this movie...only it was called TITANIC. That movie was a hole if ever I've seen one!

I'm a bit skeptical as well - snopes.com doesn't seem to have the skinny either way, though.

Neat story, either way. If I lived nearby, I would certainly be wanting to check it out. Hmm, my cousin's husband is from Nova Scotia - I wonder what he's heard. Anyone from around there got any info?

haha what are you talking about?? so they just made all that up? it was in rolling stone and there was a show on A&E about it which you can buy on VHS. Sure some of the theories about what might be down there dont have much proof, but the pit itself is very real

I'm with mdisanto. A&E is not the kind of channel to produce and air a special based on an urban legend.

If you google "Oak Island Nova Scotia" you find links to lists of links. I haven't read all of it of course but one sensible interpretation is that someone buried a huge treasure by digging the deep shaft, to below sea level, and then dug laterally back UP toward ground level and left treasure in a cavity above sea level but below grade. They then dug a tunnel from the original deep shaft to the sea, flooding the shaft, but only up to the sea level line, thus cutting off access to the treasure via the original shaft. Later the diggers can retrieve the treasure by digging a fresh shaft down from above the cavity where the treasure was left. Given that Oak Island has been extensively explored for generations, the assumption is that the original diggers never returned and that the treasure remains buried where it was left. |

There are probably a million places in the world where you could dig down 2 feet and find flagstones - there could have been a house there. The location looks to be near the shore, so all the other stuff was probably washed up out of the sea over thousands of years. Don't you find it slightly curious that all those expeditions went to this place, and not a single artefact is available for examination? |

uhh?? did you read anything? they found a stone with symbols written on it, they found a piece of paper with two letters written on it in quill pen over 100 feet blow, and best of all, they sent an underwater camera down one shaft they dug and found images of a human body and a chest. clearly there is osmething down there. if you take one look at the picture at http://www.activemind.com/Mysterious/Topics/OakIsland/story.html you will notice that it is not just some random tunnel

I said "available for examination" and none of the "finds" are - they've all been "lost". Two centuries of digging and nothing to show for it but a web page! |

Well...I've done countless research on this as well as many other "strange" topics. There is actually an extraordinarily clever system of tunnels leading to and from the ocean. Once you get to sea-level it floods because of all of the tunnels. They put some dye in the hole one time and found it spewing out all over the perimeter of the island. It also seems that there's a wooden barrier every 10 or so feet. So there's obviously something down there. There are supposedly drills that have brought up bits of gold chain and human remains...I'm not sure if I believe it or not because they claim to have "lost" their evidence. It is quite interesting, though. But I think they're probably looking in all of the wrong places...The only reason the first two teenagers started digging there was because of two trees that were near eachother that looked like an "X" (As in X Marks the Spot.) It wouldn't be that simple. Plus, since it was buried centuries ago there would be sediment building up over another area where they may have left clues. Plus modern construction at the area has covered too many acres. A lot of the stuff is bullshit just to get companies to fund for the massive pumps pumping out the water from the hole. It's not going to work because it will just fill up to sea level. Some people are just fucktards.

Anyways...this is just a small piece of shit. There's much more interesting unexplained stuff out there like the Crystal Skulls.
