I know that El Barto has this game, but anyone else who wants to join another thread about video gaming in general or Max Payne in particular feel free to pipe up.
Does anyone notice a MAJOR discrepancy between the PS2 (or probably X-Box) versions of Max Payne 2 and the PC? My wife got me the PS2 version for Christmas. The graphics are terrible! Worse than the original. Everything's all choppy, the characters are very pixelated and it looks about the equivalent of a PS1 game. I remember the graphics from the original, and they were pretty solid. (In fact, when I got the PS2, they blew me away at the time, but since then I've seen better...) Anyway, I downloaded the trial version of Max Payne 2 from online and noticed a difference immediately. I was amazed. It sucks because it's too late to return the PS2 version, and I don't imagine my wife would like it if I went out and spent 30 or 40 dollars on the PC version, even though it would be on a different platform and the graphics are far superior. She would just look at it as spending money on a game I already had.
How much does the resolution of your monitor (TV or computer) have to do with the appearance of the game? For instance, if I could display the PS2 game through my computer monitor, would that make a difference? Does Sony even make such an adapter to display the PS2 through a computer screen? I don't know if the problem lies with the fact that my tv is old (about 6 years) or if the PS2 game was just made afterwards with worse graphics built into the game.

PS2's are just generally not as good as PC's I think. I mean if you are running a low end PC then it probably would. I've seen graphics of the PS2 version and it looks like a PC running it in low resolution. luckily for me I got my new machine in time to christen it with Max Payne 2.Short but absolutely amazing. Only played that CM4 and Broken Sword 3 recently. Need to start playing more games.

yep.i think that ps2 games are just made in lower definitions regardless your monitor.and it seems pretty logical too since an xbox is a actually a p3 750mhz (ps2 is even lower as i heard).actually the only advantage of consoles over pcs is the price(you can play with a 200$ console but a 200$ pc will not get you far as long as new games are concerned)

I can't vouch for the PS2 version but I can say the PC version's graphics were fantastic...very smooth and fluid motion. The PC is able to display graphics at a higher resolution, resulting in more detail. Whenever they port a game over from PS2 or XBox to the PC, we get better graphics out of the game on the PC. The TV's resolution is much lower than a monitor, that's why...it's an inferior display to a monitor.

I agree -- the PC graphics were amazing. (although maybe I'm just used to PS2 game graphics...) I think I'm done with console games forever.

Console games are always a sure thing, you know they're going to run, and well. PC games, unless you have a fast computer, might look good but have a low frame rate, or look like crap and have a great frame rate, it depends on settings and your pc. Xbox can do pretty high resolution graphics, about the equivalent of 800x600 on a computer. The other two are stuck with 480i or 480p, which is equivalent to under 640x480, very pixellated. But tvs are bigger and you sit further away, etc. My computer is a 1.6 ghz duron (oced to 1.8) 256 megs of ram, and a geforce 4 ti4200. It's definitely not the fastest, but I have no problems with any games, might not run at highest settings, but ever since I built this I have barely touched my consoles. I guess my point is, whatever is more convenient for you is the answer. |

I thought that Max Payne 2 was incredible.
I'm not much of a gamer so I hadn't seen the ragdoll effect before.

Call of Duty for PC is very good, IMO.
I really like the fact that you're a typical grunt.

I've been playing Call of Duty a lot online lately with my friends at work...it's a lot of fun. The single player game is fucking amazing.
As far as PCs go, if you want to keep up with all the latest games, if you update your system every 2 or 3 years (whatever is more financially viable for you), then you should be fine. How often does a new console come out? Maybe around 3-5 years or so. One year after the console hits the market, it's already outdated...graphics aren't gonna look as nice, etc. But you'll always be limited to that console, cause that console can't be updated. Game developers will be limited to what they can do, where the PC game developers can actually push the technology.
Keeping your PC updated is not as bad as most people make it out to be. If anything, you'd have to replace the motherboard, CPU, memory, and video card..keep the rest. Systems are getting so inexpensive these days (eMachines...check them out, they're not shit systems anymore), that it's almost easier to go and buy a new system instead of changing 4 things.

If you want a cheap but powerful system, like he said, get a refurb emachines and stick a video card in it. RAM wouldn't hurt either. Honestly, they aren't bad at all, my mom has one and I put a radeon 9000 in it, it runs plenty fast. Just make sure you put a fan in the back, and it has an agp slot. |

There's this new eMachines at Best Buy that we just got in...it's like fuckin $650 after mail in rebates for the system, 17" CRT, and (shitty) Lexmark printer...the system itself costs like, $620 or something. It's an AMD Athlon XP 3000+, 512MB RAM, 120GB (or 160?) harddrive, DVD player, CDRW, and NVIDIA GeForce4MX...not the best card, but much better than integrated Intel shit...that system is a fucking steal.

Max Payne 2 actually looks good on XBOX. That's what the GeForce is in there for.
It's not high-end PC quality, but it's mid-grade PC quality for sure. |

Sadly, I only have a PS1, but Soul Reaver is one of my favourite games ever.

I've played Soul Reaver 2 for PS2, it only cost about 20 bucks or so and it's a pretty decent game.

I'd love to check it out...plus L.O.K;Defiance is comin' out soon. They could make a great movie out of the series, maybe have Joaquim Phoenix as Raziel! |
