...were recorded live to 2-track? I'll feel really stupid if none of them were but I remember reading before that some of the COR songs were done live to 2-track

I'm not 100% sure but I believe the whole album was recorded this way. Anyway, just before or after the release of COR, Frank told a French magazine that he was very satisfied with this method. If I remember well, he added that his young brother seemed to enjoy the COR sound more than the songs themselves. |

i'm pretty sure what they did was record the band live to 2-track and then overdub on top of the best take. thats what an old issue of Gutiar magazine said at least

I did'nt think COR was only 2-track...although I do remember FB saying it was recorded fairly simply,1 guitar left channel, the other right,in a TV interview. The first Catholics album was,I think nearly all the FB+Catholics are. |

yes, COR was a live 2-track album, and produced by FB himself.

I think it was recorded to 16-track. It sounds as though there are three guitars in "The Last Stand of Shazeb Andleeb". |

Frank Black on COR:
"That's where it started to get simplified — we went down to 16 tracks," he says. "It wasn’t live, but it was more live with simpler performances involving fewer instruments..."

I think that the way Cult of Ray is recorded and mixed is a big part of what takes the punch out of it for a lot of people. Example - the solo at the end of Jesus Was Right is kickass, but shouldn't be on only one channel. I think that panning stuff all the way to one side makes it seem more isolated and distant from the instruments on the other side. I don't like the way the band Love was mixed either. The drums are only in one channel. UGH!
