i have...a few weeks ago in toronto.

he was really unfriendly. i think it was because he was late for the show and didn't want to waste time with a photo. can't blame her majesty, i guess.

anyone have any positive frank experiences?

Myself and my friend went to the first gig on the last Euro tour in Dublin. We got there early and could heard the band rehearsing round the back. We sneaked in around the back and were standing in the shadows watching the rehearsals. Then one of the roadies cleared us out saying that no one was allowed to watch the rehersals.

When he finished rehearsing, he walked into another room where there was 5 or 6 journalists waiting to do interviews. We just sat there at listening to all the interviews. By the end, about 10 or so fans had managed to sneak in and he signed CDs, posed for pics, answered some brief questions when all the interviews were over. We had bought him a black t-shirt with faces of some Irish literary figures on it and he thanked us and took it with him when he left.

All in all, he seemed friendly and fairly relaxed.

regards

i have.... a few weeks ago and a few times in the past.....some advice, if you do ever feel the need to go up and talk to him, do it when he is not busy setting up his equipment or packing it away, he is quite receptive when he's not in the middle of doing stuff. do not go up to him , for example, when he is carrying heavy objects, singing on a stage or driving....these situations are both inoppurtune and dangerous. *(walking up to him and rubbing his belly is both extremely rude and a bit sociopathic, so if the urge comes over you....walk away [i've seen it happen])
he is however a very friendly guy and quite personable.

I met him in Syracuse during the first Catholic's tour. He was extremely friendly and pleasant. He was sitting with Dave Mc at a booth and having a pre-show drink. I spoke briefly with him (asking him no silly questions) just simple pleasant comments. He seemed great and complimented my band's name. Not much of a meeting - but more than enough for me.

As I wrote before....

During the DITS tour, I drove from Nashville to Columbus Ohio to see FB&TC's perform.

I got there about 3 pm and pulled up to park at Little Brothers and right when I pulled up, Frank and co. were loading in.

I waited up the little hill in my truck. I was ecstatic to be in the presence of one of my musical idols, but being in a band myself, the load in is a bitch and I didn't want to bother anyone, and I didn't want to be a "FAN" or a spaz.

After he was done, he looked my way and waved me over. I told him I drove 6 hours from Nashville "Where they hate us." he said. That shocked me. The last time I saw him was in Nashville for The Cult of Ray tour. I don't remember it being a bad show, but maybe they just didn't have a lot of people there. He told me he may go back, he wanted to do multiple night stands at tiny places (and it looks like for this tour he's doing just that sort of thing.) I gave him the name of the clubs I thought would work and the contacts. I then gave him a cd of my band THE WHAT FOUR (shameless I know, but come on man!!!! he was my musical guru). I told him I would love the chance to open for them. He said he dug the name and said they always needed stuff to listen to in the van.

Anyway, I figured I got more than I could ask for by getting to meet and talk to him, so I asked for his autograph (which I will scan sometime and share here...he drew a cool alien with his name)and let him go.

I went back to the truck and was writing in the same notebook in the back of the truck and whiling away the beautiful beautiful day it was, and just buzzing about having met him. Lo and behold, I am overtaken by a shadow. Frank had walked over to my truck and came to the side and started talking to me again. He asked about the band and what it consisted of. Two guitars, bass and drums...The What Four. The basics of Rock and Roll. We talked about how it was recorded, to a 16 track hard disc and some other techy stuff.

Man, I was thinking...don't fucking geek out, but this was my musical hero, right here, talking to me about my stuff. I had so many things I wanted to talk to him about but, it wasn't the right time and I didn't want to freak him out. I still think back and smile.

Bwahhahahahaha!
Who would want to hang with a queen like you, NIRV?

Yeah a couple of times, he was really cool and chatty.

First time was before they went on, he was chillin' had a nice exchange with him.
He's sorta sarcastic and sardonic like I am, I like those kind of people, "nice" people piss me off.

Second time, I brought him some food from my restaraunt.

He was really happy about it, and went outt of his way to shake my hand and thank me.

He said something about it about a quarter of the way through the show too.

Cool guy, hella songwriter/performer.

i met him in chicago, last april. me and my friend were in a terrible situation: he had his wallet pickpocket and lost his ticket to the show - and the show was sold out. we were walking near the club, going to the subway station, and when we looked across the street the band was getting into the club with their equipment. we stayed near there, looking at them carrying those cases [there was a big amplifier case with "pixies" written on], and then frank asked us if we were ok, if he could help us out with something. i really could not talk too much except saying that i went from brazil to see the show [he said "wow! great!], and my friend told him that he had lost his ticket. he promptly said "no problem! go inside, talk to scott, the drummer, and give your names to him. he'll put you on the list.". of course we did it, and we asked scott if we could stay to see the soundcheck - and the answer was no, unfortunately. well, we came out and frank was still in the van. we thanked him, he gave me a handshake and said "we start at 10:15". the man was very polite, surely. not many words, but it was great. as i read in other topic, i can't expect him to be my best friend.

but the coolest thing was getting in the club at showtime. the doorman asked me for the ticket, and i said:
- i'm on the list.
- which list?
- frank's list.
- oh, ok... let me see... yeah, ok. enjoy the show.

hahaha that was great. and what a show that night. thank you very much frank, scott, dave mc, dave p [very nice guy, talked to him after the show. he said that he would love to come to brazil] and eric [another nice gentleman - he received my band's cd]

I met Frank on the 2001 summer. I work for a Harley-Davidson customs magazine, and the Hells Angels were doing there big European reunion in France called the "Free Wheels". He was invited there to perform.
I first met him as we was visiting the site with his band. I just went to them to say hello and that I really liked their music. they've been very friendly.
After that, as each year, I have to cover the event for the magazine, and as I can easily go backstage, I went to meet him. I really wanted to have him in the magazine, so I took a photographer with me and made several pictures. Even some with Frank and I. Can you beleive that. We ask him if we could do some pictures for the mag, he said ok and after that, the photographer asked him if he would be ok if I come on the picture with him. No problem, Frank taped on his leg and had me sat next to him. Cool.
I after insisted to my boss to have the picture in the magazine. It was quite small, but it appeared. I also had a picture of the show in the article. That was fun, all I wanted is that people who read the magazine get to know Frank and, hopefully, want to discover his music. I don't know if some did, but at least, I've tried and made my effort. I've got something like a dozen of pictures of Frank during the show. They're great pictures, as the show was.

Frank is hit and miss. This last tour he was rather nice and he did sign some stuff for me after the show. This time around he was much more pleasant than times in the past.

The entire band is very nice. Rich is awsome, my friends -who he befriended on the Pistolero tour- and I spoke to hime for sometime after one of the Toronto shows. Found Dave Mc really nice as well.

I met frank first in the fall of '94 in cleveland OH. He was doing an acoustic opening set for they might be giants. I was wondering around outside the venue for hours before the show. I was around back scopeing out the tour bus, and then frank pulled up in a taurus. I walked up to him and had a short chat and got in a request song! He dedicated " duke of earl" to me during his set! I also got and autograph on a flyer for the show! He's really a very nice guy!

I've met Frank twice. The first time, my brother and I were walking past a bar in West L.A. after a night of barhopping. It was pretty late... about 12:30 or something on a weekday. As we walked past this bar, I heard someone come out and start walking behind us. I turned around to get a look at whoever it was just as a "walking around in the city" safety precaution and I notice a big bald dude walking with a blonde... I only caught a glimpse of them and thought to myself, "Wow that really looks a lot like Frank Black!" Then I turned around again and saw that IT REALLY WAS!!! He had just let his wife into his car on the street and was walking around to the drivers side when I walked up and had to say "Excuse me" a bunch of times because he seemed a little deaf in one ear but I finally got his attention and asked if he was Frank and then told him I was a big fan and to have a good night. I was standing right next to his wife's door and didn't want to freak them out so I made it quick... then as my brother and I were walking away, he drove by and honked and waved out the window to us. When I said I was a fan, his face lit up real big and he was really appreciative.

The second time was at a record signing in downtown L.A. I tried to chat him up whil he was signing Devil's Workshop and he seemed really disinterested and kinda rude until I mentioned that my band covered Freedom Rock at which point he threw his hands down on the table and smiled at me and said "I don't even remember how to play that one! Maybe you could show me the chords!" Then I shook his hand and was off. Two pretty solid experiences in my opinion. I've also seen him a couple of times eating and hanging out at a few L.A. bars when he's not touring but usually he's spending time with his wife or with friends so I just keep my distance and am content with just being in the room with Francis himself!!!

Sorry for the longish story. Hope you dig it!

hahaha that's funny because i had a dream last week that a iwas in a car chatting with frank [we were in some kind of van on a brazilian highway] and he was tellin' stories about touring etc. and then he said that he wanted to play The Man Who Was Too Loud [one of my favorites] once in a show but couldn't remember the chords, so he went to a newsstand and bought a cheap magazine to learn the chords again. [we have here in brazil these cheap magazines with chord-only transcriptions of radio hits] funny that this dream i had was like a mix of your two experiences meeting frank.

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the Athens show and although I live in Atlanta, I missed that show Saturday due to a good friends wedding reception. Captain Maximus(Tom) and his wife Carol were too cool. My wife and I had alot of fun hangin with them at the show. Meeting David's mom was cool too....you should've seen the look on her face seeing her son up there playing. I took about 80 pics and have them on a cd..I'll add a link to the site so as not to bog this one down. I got one with David Phillips but I have to admit the highlight of the show was at the end..Frank was packing up and I got a pic with him..Man...it was so cool. I think I said something gay like.."Frank, you're immortal!" TO which he said "Ahhhh..shut up!" My wife snapped the shot and I was done..how much better can it get? Anyway, I should have the pics up in a day or so and will email the pics to all that gave me their address at the show. I would also like to add that the Bennies were great and and I did buy their two cd's...gave one to Tom and Carol..then somehow on the trip back to Atlanta we lost it. If anybody can tell me how to get in touch with them I'll buy two more. I found myself "Jonesing" to hear them on Saturday! Jeremy was cool and the other guys in the band we as well. Reid Paley and the magic show were OK, let's face it we are there to see Frank.

I have met Frank twice in Holland, first time was during the "cult of ray" tour in Nighttown, Rotterdam.
He walked out of there after the show(wearing bermuda shorts and those cheap beachslipper, which looked very cool on him), just as whe where leaving, was very nice and gave us all a high 5.
Second time was @ LVC Leiden, whe where waiting 2 get in as he walked out after the soundcheck.
Again he was very nice and shook hands with us.
During the show a friend of mine gave him a bag of weed, he thanked us for it but said he stopped smoking.(it was during gouche away)
Hope 2 see him again in holland soon.(dunno if he will tour the benelux this time, otherwise I just go to France)

OK here's my first post.
I meet Frank in Seattle on the DITS tour.
I was the first in line outside the door listening to the sound check.
When the sound check was over the door opened and there was Frank leading Rich and Scott outside. I turned to my friend behind me and said here they come. as I turned back around I saw Rich and Scott walking past and then I looked down to see Frank stopped in front of me looking up. I'm 6'7" and as I looked down in to his blue eyes he said thanks for coming. before I could say anything the rest of the people in line went nuts and I just nodded at him, then he walked past everybody else.
Not much of a meeting, but its mine. I enjoy reading all of the post about Frank and i'm very happy to find this group !!!

I met him once, briefly, after an acoustic show with Dave P. I basically just shook his hand and thanked him for a good show. He's a nice guy, and like "frank black francis" said, just don't bug him while he's busy, setting up, etc. I also wouldn't bother him while he's tired and trying to leave. I heard him say to Reid Paley and Dave, after signing many autographs and having some photos taken with fans, "let's go back to the hotel." So he was tired, and I can't blame him for being short with people after a tiring show. He's only human. I've heard people say he's an egomaniac and a jerk, blah blah blah, but he doesn't seem any more moody or whatever than anyone else. If you consider how much time he spends on the road, he is surprisingly cool and friendly. If someone like Frank is not receptive to you, just figure that he is not in the mood to talk. If he talked to every single person who approached him, he'd never get to leave the club. He's not a household name but enough people know who he is and try to talk to him that he has to be a little bit sick of people trying to buddy up to him. It seems that most musicians would appreciate a short compliment, thank you, and goodbye rather than an in-depth conversation on a topic he has probably discussed 1000 times. Know what I mean? Remember he has been in the business for 15 years now.

After the Philly show, a rather star-struck female fan tapped him on the arm when he walked outside and said, "oh Frank, you're so wonderful!" He smiled and said thank you even though he at first looked a little wary of her. She really was in awe of him and I think he could sense that. I was surprised to see him come outside so soon after the show. If he had sent Rich or Dave to the van, they might have made a cleaner getaway!

Met him, asked him if he wanted a pint, he declined and told me he had to go on stage. He then introduced me to Eric Drew and excused himself. Eric is the man. Real funny, nice people. Don't like asking 'famous' people for autographs, gave Eric mine instead.

After the Bowery Ballroom gig a few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to briefly meet Dave and Rich at the bar. Both very pleasant and easy to approach. In my lame attempt to try to show my appreciation for how much I enjoyed the set, I offered them beers and had a quick chat with Rich while we drank. We talked about past shows, crowd responses and next venues... Dave declined, but was gracious.

Considering it was impossible to get close to these super heros the first two times I saw FB & FB&TC in Canada, this 10 minute mixer gave me the shivers.

During my last cocktail one of the stage manger/rodieman passed by me allowing me to ask... "Is Frank coming out"?
He said No (I hope he knows what I meant!!!)... but he will exit the front soon.

With that said I gulped, grab my woman and headed for the door (okay, the place was shutting down anyways).

We waited outside by the white alien bubble van... then the "man" came out, cool... focused...(I think I saw a bright light behind him), anyways I shook his hand, spilled out a quick pleasantry...he said thanks, then started to load another non alien bubble van parked in front.

At the next show in NY (The Warsaw) Dave was cool enough to pose with me for a picture and a hshake, and Rich blessed me again with a hshake and a nice comment (I'm thinking he remember me from a few weeks ago, my girlfriend thinks I'm being a child. I think she might be right!) (I think it might also do with the fact that I asked her to stuff my Heineken bottle Rich used for a guitar solo in her purse)

All in all, I felt damn lucky to get a chance to see these guys perform, and even luckier to have made minor "contact".

This monkey has gone to Heaven!
