i'm all for drawing the line.. and i totally support the moderators of this forum, but it seems like it's kind of out of control lately. thus far i've seen 2 threads locked that were deemed "not going anywhere".. but contained nothing offensive.

i'm as annoyed by all the recent lameness as anyone, but i don't know if shutting down every potentially lame thread is the answer either.

Heh, which threads did I wrongfully lock?

I suspect the King of Karaoke to be the Swimmer, actually....

i'm not saying "wrongfully".. but, for instance, the recent King Of Karaoke (aka Swimmer) vs. Stiches thread..

obviously that was headed in potentially ugly direction BUT, is the potential alone enough to lock it..

and El Barto locked some other thread the other day that he decided "wasn't going anywhere"..

A thread full of insults and annoyances and general jerkiness (the thread I locked was of some guy just causing trouble) doesn't have a place here...it's not gonna go anywhere. I don't lock legit threads (derailed threads); I'm not that hardcore. But if a thread starts out with someone looking to start trouble, that's just all that's gonna happen to it, and there's no point in having that stuff on the forum.

Well, as the queen of threads which go nowhere (see: The Henhouse) I think I can say that if people are there to have fun and get along, then the thread will live on (to page 103 if applicable). If it is just a thread to begin a controversy, I am all for it getting locked. There is talking about nothing, and then there is being an asshole just for assholes sake.

Sorry, I wasn't actually looking to start trouble. I just noticed that almost every legit / interesting topic goes into nowhere land. I figured I could create a spot for the nonsense. I'm new to this forum stuff. There appears to be a lot of jabbing going on. You guys obviously have more dealings with this type of thing than I do. It seems to come with the territory. It's just that it's almost not interesting to be on here if everywhere you go it turns into some inside back and forth banter that no one gets except the author. I read the stuff and think, "Wow! I need to get myself a life! " I'll do better in the future. You win this round Mr. Stitch!

for future reference there already is a thread for nonsense called, appropriately enough, "a place for nonsense"....check it out, junior. Everyone's welcome there (except ramona...no ramonas allowed)

Didn't everyone go to second grade? Isn't that when most of learn to ignore the bully? If there is no resistance, there is nothing to battle against.

If you start threads just to start a war of words (anything called ____VS____ seems to be a battle in my opinion) then you have to realize that maybe other people don't feel like that is a productive use of time. If you want to have a battle of the minds/egos, you can always move that to email.

Yeah, I know, I think the intent was good King, the threads do get congested and completely derailed by this and that's my biggest problem (especially if there are people interested in the actual topic who don't feel like trying to participate in actual conversation amidst a slander match). But it's better to just not respond or respond once and let the other person make a fool of themselves alone even though I understand it's difficult to show restraint when attacks are directed and personal (well, as personal as can be on the internet).

In the past we have let threads like that go in the hopes that the hostilities would be contained and could be easily ignored but they have invariably escalated and insults/retorts start appearing in other threads and the next thing you know, it's far worse than it is right now. So here we are...

Aye - if someone is hassling you, don't respond. Ignore the person. Deal with it privately by email.

Worst case, contact Dean, Jim or myself.

It's very simple, and usually works well.

No I wasn't feeling hassled at all. I just felt like showing Stitch my skills. Me and my buds used rib each other relentlessly for fun. Or until they gave up crying. Been the "Skagg Master" since I was about six. I also fancy myself quite the comedian. I just wish when I did my "open mike" the patrons at the comedy club felt that way.

COF, Barto, et al can close any thread they like, as far as I'm concerned. Who has time to care about such things as their thread being moved or closed? Oy vey! I wish I had that level of free time.

If anyone's interested, I have a buy one get one free coupon for "Lives-R-Us" that I don't need.

and i think the guys running this msgboard do a good job. if you want to see some extreme moderating, pop over to project rockstar! it's mad! they've assigned 'admins' and it seems those said 'admins' can assign new 'admins' - basically their friends. these people have all the power, they award 'chuckles' if someone makes a funny post. oh yes, no more is it good enough just to make someone laugh, or to get someone to reply with a LOL or something, to really make it you need an 'admin' to 'award' you a chuckle! which of course normally goes to, well basically their friends... then there's 'star points' you get these points for helping people out with the rules of the game and stuff, no more is it good enough for people to help out of the goodness of their own heart, you get star points as an incentive... and they take these away from you if you post something they don't like... someone took one away from me (and these things show up for all to see) as i made a little joke about the admins, i didn't even have any star points anyway!

okay, rant over, but apart from that they moderate like heck, the regulars don't seem to like newbies posting, and make that clear, and if you mention that then you get on the wrong side of everyone... and there's swear filters on just about every offensive word, and some not so... and any potentially offensive thread is removed without discussion...

apart from that it's full of 14 year old manic depressants, who'd do well to make some real-life friends and stop complaining about their parents...

so what was this thread about again?
