Anyone see this yet? I checked it out the other night. I'm not really sure it was all that good. I'm into edgy flicks and all, but this one was just trying too hard. I got fustrated half way through and started yelling out "where the hell are the hobitts?" No one thought I was all that funny. Like usual. Well, except me of course!

i thought it was a "good" film, but i agree that it was trying too hard. it's basically an Oscar vehicle for the actors, and the director. a very Hollywood-friendly story trying to look arty with nonlinear editing and "cool" cinematography.
i didn't think the story benefitted from being told out of sequence.. and the cinematography, while beautiful to look at, was over the top. i'm tiring of the whole "let's just make it really grainy so it feels more genuine and real" philosophy.. it just makes it feel more contrived to me. the performances were undeniably great, but the writing is unforgivably trite at times.. (i'm wondering if it's partly because the writers aren't native English speakers)..
i guess i wasn't in the mood for another really depressing film (a la HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG, MYSTIC RIVER etc..). but that's just me. it's still a "good" film, but not as amazing as some critics are making it out to be. |

also, Sean Penn's character was an idiot for dissing his ultra-babe girlfriend (Serge Gainsbourg's real daughter).. after that, it was hard for me to sympathize with him (that, plus the fact that he just seems like a total dick in real life) |

HATED this movie. More later, I'm just glad I'm not alone for the moment.

Alright, so the acting was great in my mind, it's true. Everyone was convincing and I bought their performances (perhaps less so the mother, especially her sudden bloodlust). But the writing was awful, the non-linear for the sake of non-linear did nothing for the story, had no relevance, and was poorly done to boot. I don't think you should be sitting in the theatre and trying to figure out mentally, 'where does THIS scene fit'. It seems like it could've been made into a 30 min TV show if it were cut and trimmed properly and there was less time spent on jumbling the scenes as randomly as possible.
It's very rare that I contemplate leaving a theatre mid-movie, but this was certainly one of them that I kept thinking, "When is it going to get to the point". It never did. The ending to me was a waste of time without going in to details and 'spoiling' things for everyone.
Why does this movie exist? And, yes, why grit it up? Artsy for the sake of artsy or an Oscar perhaps.
And for the record, while I did still think Last Samurai was decent, Tom Cruise nearly ruined it for me...

Hmm, this is interesting. I have heard all these critics raving about it but every "real" person I know is like, 'eh..'
I do love Benecio though - I will probably rent it just for him. But a movie has to be great or exciting to get to me to the theater these days. I'm old and jaded.

Anybody seen Amores Perros? I'm gonna try to watch that one first because I heard they're basically the same movie. |

I really liked Amores Perros, I'd tell you if it was the same movie but I haven't seen 21 grams. ;)

they're only similar in that they have a non-linear structure, and follow several different stories, but the stories are very different.
i liked AMORES PERROS better than 21 GRAMS, though the segment with the model was weak. i liked the dog-guy story and the guy from Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN is great, Gael Garc’a Bernal.
it's nice to see films from Mexico starting to get recognition. |
