pretty.
I think this is all quite amazing. Did any of you see how the marks from the air-bags like folded the ground? It's pretty weird. It's really cool, though

I think it's rather amazing, but not really that spectacular. We all know what Mars looks like...I mean, you know, who hasn't seen Total Recall?

There's still a huge difference in seeing Mars in a movie (where the shots are all spectacular) and seeing REAL photos. I think it's amazing.

I was being a little sarcastic. I think it's amazing to see these photos. How long does it take to get to Mars again?

How do we know these are real....?
If i'm correct, it's only NASA's probes that have made it, the Japanese and other(??) probe died on the way...
Am i the only one a little suspicious?

I reckon that the NASA probe was programmed to give Beagle 2 a little nudge at the crucial moment. Probably shot straight past and will land on Pluto in 2012.
I agree that the photos are amazing. Landing a spaceship on Mars is an insanely difficult exercise. I guess NASA would have felt a bit uncomfortable if Beagle 2 had been a success at a tenth of the cost.

I'm sorry to be a killjoy theCroutonFouton but the colours in that image are pre-NASA colour correction and give a much more romantic image of Mars than is apparently the case. The same image after NASA corrected the colours looks much less alien :(

haha, that's fine, I had posted the picture at the beginning when it had just been released to press. It wasn't color corrected until about 2 hours after it.

i've often wondered what it would look like to be standing on the UTTER desolation of Pluto, looking at the Sun that is basically just another star in the sky. And just how god damn COLD it is there. like, a few degrees above absolute zero. That is just insane

I hope FB and the C's will record a new Mars song soon - or a song about total solar eclipses. I wonder if Frank has ever seen it ? It makes you feel like "doomsday" :-)

I was impressed like everyone when man began to fly out of earthly regions to planets in the sky with total media coverage we watched the heroes land as ceremoniously they disturbed the cosmic sand
I awe with admiration we listened to them talk such pride felt they, such joy to be upon the moon to walk my romantic vision shattered when it was explained to me spacemen wear old diapers in which they shit and pee
chorus:
oh the intergalactic laxative will get you from here to there relieve you and believe me without a worry or care if shitting is your problem when you're out there in the stars the intergalactic laxative will get you from here to mars
they don't partake like you and I of beefy burger mush their food is specially prepared to dissolve into slush absorbed my multi-fibres in the super diaper suit otherwise the slush would trickle down inside the boot
you may well ask now what becomes of liquid they consume a pipe is led from penis head to a unit in the room the water is recirculated, filtered for re-use in case of anti-gravity, pee gets on the loose
wherever man has conquered on the quest for frontiers new I'm glad he's always had to do the no. one and two it makes it all so ordinary just like you and me to know the greatest heroes, they had to shit and pee!

i think i'd quite like to see europa, up close, see if there really is moving oceans under the frozen surface... and io would be a 'blast'... also, if one could survive, would be great to travel into jupiter, that would be wild... does it really have a solid diamond at it's core? hmmmmmmmm.... but indeed, more probes, more photos, i want to see these kind of shots from all the planets... which brings me to, is pluto actually a planet? surely by definition it's actually a comet or large asteroid... but i guess as it was classified as a planet already, it's likely to remain...

Yeah, there is much controversy (from what I hear) over Pluto's planet status. Many scientists today seem to think that it is little more than a relativly huge Kuiper Belt object. But I think it's classification as a planet is staying the same...kind of like a tradition thing, I guess.
Yeah, Europa seems like it would be AWESOME to see. That layer of ice on top looks like it has so much contour and character from being bombarded by stellar objects for so long. Io would be insane to see, because of its extreme environs. On that note, so would the surface of Venus...isn't it almost impossible to send a probe to Venus, because of the acidic gases and heat that are in its atmosphere? I think I remember reading that the Sun's heat is magnified through these atmospheric gases, and essentially make the surface of Venus even hotter than the surface of Mercury.

If only the moon were habitable...
Imagine if it were and it had a completely different ecosystem than Earth and maybe an indigineous population.
How much more would space travel have taken off? Maybe in our lifetime people would actually be making honeymoon/vacation trips to the moon. Instead, just a select elite of scientists and astronauts. My only hope for space is probably the x-plane developing into something viable and cost-effective.
I wish Canada would put more money into space exploration too, though with ESA and China and various other groups finally starting to develop, perhaps things will get competitive again (hopefully without a coinciding arms race). We need things like space stations and lunar/planetary manned outposts just to keep space technology moving.

Canada did do a right good job with that Arm though..and the Canadian biotech company, Nexia (http://nexiabiotech.com/), developed and is about to sell a ton of incredibly strong fabric for space-exploration uses (remember that spider-goat gene-splice they were doin a while back? Now they have spliced spider genes with plants, to priduce super-strong filament for mass-production...

Mars has been discussed quite frequently as of late on the radio show coast to coast AM. Their webiste is www.coasttocoastam.com They've mentioned that they're trying to get Robert Zubrin as one of their upcoming guests so I've suggested to them that they use Robert Onion for some music when or if he's on their show. Maybe a little free exposure for Frank and the guys?! |

There was an interesting documentary on Channel 5 last week about Mars and the possibilities regarding terraforming. It's a fascinating concept and I suspect a lot of scientists get weak-kneed at the thought of being able to play God on that kind of scale.
They've probably nicked most of the ideas from Kim Stanley Robinson and he probably nicked a few of someone else. The science seems to be achievable though.
I am fairly sure that Mars will be colonised in some manner during the next millennium. Now that would bring a whole new meaning to relocating with your job.
The golf courses would have to be bloody big though. At 33% earth's gravity Tiger Woods would be driving 1000 yards!!
Skiing on Olympus Mons would also be pretty cool!!
