Considering the mutual interest on this forum in unique music, debate about the laws and mp3 downloading, and the general enthsiastic discussion of politics and media and the topics of the day, I wanted to share these nice "who's who" lists I've been running across, concerning RIAA, Clear Channel, and general media holdings and affiliations.
Your News Media: "Conglomerate 'Cheat Sheet'" http://www.breakdownindustries.com/archives/000021.html
"RIAA Family Tree": http://magnetbox.com/riaa/tree.asp
First ten pasted here: 1. 1500 - 1500 Records -- Red -- 2. 2.O.G. - 2.O.G. Ent, 20G Entertainment 3. 241 4. 2Ksounds - 2-K Sounds 5. 32 Records - 32 Jazz Records, 32. Jazz Records 6. 333 Music 7. 4AD - 4AD Records 8. 5 Minute Walk - Five Minute Walk 9. 5.1 Entertainment 10. 510 - 510 Records

Someone else's fairly good analysis of the great Clear Channel article in "Harper's Magazine", (an article which, if I had no scruples, I would scan and host the entirety of on my website for your reading pleasure ): http://www.gnutellanews.com/article/9489
Clear Channel: http://www.salon.com/ent/clear_channel/
Clear Channel on your radio dial: http://www.cjr.org/tools/owners/clearchannel.asp ----------------------------------------------------------------

edit: wow - I sure can make the worst topics, apparently. I'll leave it up for a little while longer, then remove its pestilent stain from the forum.
Maybe I should have asked a question -hahahhaha. Any thoughts? |

Fear not, here is me to prevent the death of the worthy cause. If you want more info on this, read 'Confessions Of A Record Producer' by Moses Avalon. You will be shocked the levels of scamming that goes on. Basically, if you get into the record biz, you're screwed every way you turn.

well, erm, my dad is a music promoter, but has his own company now, so he's independant, so he's good? actually you'd like him, he has rants about how crap radio is and how mainstream its all gone over here, partly due to the fact that a small number of companies own them all now... he went and gave a talk on that very subject, hehe! so yes, bad music industry! :)
~~~ I'm flat out, you're so beautiful to look at when you cry. Freeze, don't move, you've been chosen as an extra in the movie adaptation of the sequal to your life. Shady Lane, everybody wants one, Shady Lane, everybody needs one. |
Wow! The lists are overwhelming at "who owns what". I'm pro-capitalism but that really is disgusting. The only consolation that immediately comes to mind is that maybe this really isn't new. In pre-industrial times everything was run by the king/queen and the church, and then in the last two centuries it was a few entities with broad reach and a bunch with local near-monopolies. I suppose you might even be able to make a case that today there is actually more diversity of control, but within a context of info saturation. Yea, these guys have a lot, but then at the same time so many can also have something. Is media-culture more monolithic now than it has been historically? Is it more powerful now, in the sense of brainwashing?
Anyway, maybe the paucity of response derives from how overwhelming the situation is. When you look at the (apparent) power of these companies, it's easy to succumb to petrification a la mouth agape. |
Apparently there are no clear channel owned radio stations in NJ. They still play crap. |
Yeah but at least you can blame the dumbass program director instead of the collective hive mind of the Beast.
I looked for a cult to join, then decided to just play "Sink". Hey! I sank the LaBrea Tar Pits! |
Yeah, i keep this issue in the peripheral..
I love how RIAA says record sales are down in 2003...but fail to point out they also produced less albums. |
<in my best Brak voice> Hey thanks evrah'buhdayy!
Yeah, you could make the argument that things were worse at one time, but that doesn't really get us anywhere. That's like saying, well there never was a dam here before, so now that the dam is breaking, why complain? There are reasons for regulation controls and anti-monopoly legislation. Just because I try to look into this doesn't mean I'm an anti-capitalist - hell, with rational application, it is the best system I have seen so far. I'm anti-monopoly on the media, and it's pretty damn well too late to bitch about it, unfortunately - and somehow I don't think beheading a monarch is going to get us out of this mess. ;)
