OK, I'm bored again, so here's yet another musical conunundrum to contemplate. Basically, I want everyone to recommend to the board one new band that, in their opinion, really stands up as an excellent band. I'll get the boat rolling (to cunningly mix metaphors), with one I've mentioned before.
M83
Last year saw the release of M83's second album, 'Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts'. This has been an overwhelming success, propelling the band to the top of a number of best of year polls, and introducing the band to a wider audience. Basically, M83 come across as, to quote NME, a cross between My Bloody Valentine and Air. This is a pretty good set of references for the uninitiated, but you could add Mogwai, Sonic Youth, Cyann & Ben and Kraftwerk to that list. The sound is definitely electronic, but pushes the post-rock template to its extreme. The effect is virtually a complete wall of sound, layered with banks of retro synths and thick distorted guitars over old-school drum machines to add a chest-thudding beat. Check them out live, especially, and also their album and be blown away. You can check out some tracks on the excellent website, www.ilovem83.com, or their label site, www.gooom.com. Sorry if this has all come out a bit journalistic, but I tend to get carried away describing this band.
So thats my lot: who's up?

I really like Franz Ferdiand. They have only released two singles, Darts of Pleasure and Take Me Out, which was released today. I would highly recommend them. Its difficult to say who they sound like, although the lead singer reminds me of Stephen Malkmus.
Mr friend saw them support Belle & Sebastian and said that they really kicked arse. |

Yeah, pretty cool are they. Well done for being the only person to have enough faith in their own opinion to recommend some band they like. Mu-ha-ha, he laughs in FBnet-member-baiting fashion.

Some of it is formulaic pap, but I occasionaly crave a listen to the Burning Brides. The singer is devoted to screaming with his guts on the outside. otherwise good straightforward rock a la the stooges.
I looked for a cult to join, then decided to just play "Sink". Hey! I sank the LaBrea Tar Pits! |

The 45s are pretty good. Southern Culture on the Skids is entertaining too.

Yes, the new Weakerthan's is a 9/10. The lyrics are really great. My only complaint is the instrumental doesn't match the level of the writing...but it doesn't detract too much.
Yes, the STOP........Continue! totally makes that album..hahah..brilliance. |

Also not too new but recently discovered is Los Straitjackets. Lucha Libre masks and surf guitar. Who could possibly want more?

Numbers. Electro-sounding (think Devo or Kraftwerk NOT "electronica") with live drums and beautifully abrasive electric guitar. New album and tour soon. They rock, dudes. http://www.numbersmusic.com

I've got another band to add: Hope Of The States. Its hugely epic post-rock sort of stuff, but more structured songs than Mogwai or their ilk. CHeck it out: www.hopeofthestates.com See if you can download Black Dollar Bills from somewhere.

M83 are really good, but the French electronica has one champion, and that is AIR - their latest album, Talkie Walkie, is probably the best they've made. |

Have you seen M83 live? Stunning show, really. I'm tempted by the new Air album actually. I'm not sure if its released here yet.

and if you're into loud post-rocky stuff in the vein of early mogwai and sonic youth try a japanese band called Mono - they're fucking intense.... www.mono-44.com
they are incredibly loud live - i loved it!
also, explosions in the sky - also post-rocky, much more structured and textured through....very pretty. www.explosionsinthesky.com

Hey yeah - I like Mono too benji! If I am not mistaken, you might be surprised (I was) at the producer on Mono's album (John Zorn).....Do you also like June of 44 or Rodan? Oh, wow - hahah Explosions in the Sky, too. Good stuff.
Here's a decent review of Mono: http://www.canal.ne.jp/~sound/mono/e_ar2002.html

I have just listened to Franz Ferdinand's "Darts of pleasure", as their name was quite appealing to me (I was born in Sarajevo) but their music sounds just like any other of these new leather-jacket, "the" bands. |

I just listened to Insomnia by Numbers. For some reason it reminds me Terrorvision's Fist Of Fury. Which is just wrong.
