Anybody else like Ben Kweller? I found out about him while searching AllMusic. The review of his album , Sha sha, mentioned one song "that soars like a Frank Black tune". and me being the FB nut that I am, had to check it out. I see that he's going to be at the Coachella festival and he also did a song for the Hedwig album, Wig in a Box, along with FB, J richman, and many more.

Funny, I'm listening to his first band 'Radish' as I type. I like him and await new songs for 2004. I'm a fan.

I saw him when he was on tour with Weezer. He's pretty good.

I don't know too much about him other than he has a band with Ben Lee (who I love) and Ben Folds called 'The Bens'. You can check out their four song ep at www.attackedbyplastic.com

I think they started The Bens during the spring or summer. I think they played a few live shows and stuff. Ben Lee's website has more info - www.ben-lee.com |

I'm a big Ben Kweller fan. I had seem him with Radish locally then when he opened for the Strokes on Is This It tour. He was great live. Sha Sha is a great disc, although, he does cross too-closely into Weezer territory occasionally.
The guy is young and an unfinished project. I too am looking forward to some new stuff in '04. |

So no one is a Ben Lee fan then? He even has a song about the Pixies! And I think Cigarettes Will Kill You is one of the best pop songs. Ever.

His song about the Pixies is called Away with the Pixies. Liz Phair sings on it too. That is on his CD called Grandpaw Would which is great. But Cigarettes Will Kill You is his best album in my opinion - with the song of the same name. He's a really great songwriter.
I also saw him play at a small club in Boston and he passed out sticky name tags to the first two or so rows of people and then addressed everyone by name throughout the night, like 'how was that song, Bill?' or 'do you think it's too hot in here, Kate?' It was so great.

Just got motivated to put Grandpaw Would on and was reminded he mentions the Pixies in the very first song called Pop Queen ("you love the Pixies"). Anyway... |

I like his stuff. I pulled out and listened to an old cd-r of his stuff last night, in fact.
He's a pretty good song writer, especially being a young kid. He's more like a mix of Elliott Smith and some melodic grunge band. His lyrics are a little silly at times, but there are great ones like "Lizzy" for example. I suggest checking out that song.
As of the song "Sha Sha", I never did like that song. Sure it's 5/4, but it reminds me too much of the opening song for some cartoon on adult swim.
...though he loved to rock and roll... http://www.bagleytree.com/index_000002.htm...I, myself, am trying...

Sorry, but I think Ben Folds (especially "Rocking the Suburbs") is as gimmicky and lame as music gets. I'm sorry, but busting out your key-tar is no less cheesy and completely "anti-rock" today as it was back in the 80's. Of course, given the general myopia of most of today's music fans, Folds probably appears as fresh and inventive. And before the accusations of "old geyser" start flooding in, let it be noted that I'm only 31. Granted...that's kind of old, but it's not ancient! |

I didn't know about "The Bens". I have only Sha Sha and am planning on ordering his first. He does sound a lot like Weezer at times but that doesn't bother me. He also reminds me of They Might Be Giants on the song Sha Sha. I'm going to have to check out Ben Lee, too. |

i've had the pleasure of interviewing ben kweller once and meeting him at a bar for a drink once - a very cool guy. my standard final interview question is : if an alien landed in your backyard and asked "What is music?" what 5 songs would you play him? I forget his whole list, but the second one he said was "Headache." A cool dude indeed

That's a good question, Brian. A thinker, indeed.
