Hands down the craziest movie is Requiem for a Dream. The whole grandmother on speed is very powerful stuff. its that kinda movie where you might get queezy watching it, but not in the funny "Van Wilder" pastery scene.
In a close second would either be Fight Club or Memento. All are good. Rent and whatch.
For the "what the fuck?" effect rent Dr. Stranglove. NOT A PORNO! an actual film. Quote my friends after witnessing the ending,"WHAT THE FUCK?!?" in bewildered amusement/confusion. |

Man, for me Strangelove is one of the overratedest movies there is. Oooh, ahhh--it's over my head. It really bugs me how it's categorized as a brilliant comment on something-or-other. Whatever, man. It's just a half-assed hodgepodge of scenes with Peter Sellars being funny like he is, and is the unfortunate predacessor to a lot of really bad Hollywood "ensemble" comedies that are so damned eliteist and annoying.
This sucks because I can't remember what it was I recently watched, but I saw this really good "nukes and cold war lunacy oneupsmanship" subject comedy and immediately thought to myself, "is this what everyone means when they talk about Stranglove?" To me it's almost like, the movie is 'supposed' to be good (after all, who can argue with the cleverness of subtlely implying "he he, generals are stupid" and "guys with southern accents are unhinged and cooky"), so it just is SAID to be good. Like if you don't get its brilliance, you are just dumb (although I honestly could see myself accepting that verdict, since I am pretty stupid).
Maybe I am thinking of pretty much all the Coen brothers movies with which I'm familiar when I consider truly funny dark comedy and satire. Like, I think about Homer Stokes (in "o Brother") delivering a line like "they desecrated a fiery cross," and I say, "so maybe this is what Kubrick was hoping to accomplish." Perhaps?

Good mindfuck-but-makes-"sense" movie with lots of Actors with a capital A: Kenneth Branagh's Dead Again. Also, any of Peter Jackson's pre-Heavenly Creatures stuff is truly fucked up, particularly "Meet the Feebles." One of the plot lines involves a muppet snuff film. Sick, sick, sick. Also love John Waters' Polyester--it even has Stiv Bators! |

I have not read the book...I guess I could try but the movie kind of freaked me out. Stanley Kubrick in general is a weird one - I think any of his movies could probably go under this category. Minus EYES WIDE SHUT cause - YUCK - Tom Cruise. *Brrr* shudder to think. |

I was gonna snag the book (A Clockwork Orange) from the public library some odd weeks ago but didn't 'cuz I found the dialect glossary thing a bit intimidating. Man, I went to the library today and took a few glances at this book by James Joyce called Finnegan's Wake... now that is intimidating x 10!!! |

the A Clockwork Orange book is waaay different from the movie.
I'm ga-ga for older Malcolm Macdowell movies.
Check out the films he did with director Lindsay Anderson (If. . . , O' Lucky Man!, and Britania Hospital)

Also, Troma Team movies are all pretty freaky.

it's different, but not THAT much different. there were two versions of the book too..
overall though, i think the film captured the spirit of the book.. unlike some other adaptations.
you should read it Chris.. it's not hard to get into at all (the language).. though it might seem like that.

Hey there, i would like to revamp this thread.. This thread helped me bunches seeing movies like memento and other brainboggling movies.
I would like like to add dark city and frailty maybe not so much based on the "what the f***" effect but more based on the theme faith and memories. Something that makes you really think.

Ten Percenter, I'm a huge fan of Igmar Bergman. My favorites are Shame, Persona, Wild Strawberries, and pretty much everything else. (in terms of the mindfuck thing, "Hour of the Wolf" by Bergman is just as wild as anything by David Lynch) |

Not too sure what mind boggling film is my favourite.... I have Memento on Dvd but haven't ever got around to watching it... and Mullholland Drive is so weird that its shit.
If you guys get a chance then you should try out watching some of the more recent Far East Asain movies. They're not weird or mind boggling but they are pretty good. Films like Lifetimes (directed by Zhang Yimou), JSA, Musa, Hero. In the past there have been some pretty dodgy (but highly entertaining) Chinese films, but nowadays the Chinese are producing films that are on a par, and if not better than Hollywood.
The great thing over here is that DVD's cost less than 50p each, so you can buy whatever you want even if you think its not gonna be up to much. In a year Ive managed to get about 400 dvds, most of them are dvd quality as well which is a bonus. If a new film comes out in the US then a day or so later it will surface in the bars here in Beijing. Obviously they are video camera in cinema quality but within a month the shithot quality dvd's will be available.

These aren't particularly head fucks but whatever:
Coen Brothers are cool I didn't like Big Lewbowski to much, Barton Fink is my current fave but I've not seen many.
Anything early by Peter Jackson is generally messed up, Meet The Feebles is one fucked up puppet film, Braindead is probably the goriest movie ever made, Heavenly Creatures was a little odd and the less said about bad taste the better.
One of the biggest head fuck movies ever though has to be Eraserhead that film is so fucked up.
One last movie everyone should see (if they haven't) From Dusk Till Dawn very cool movie. Not to everyones taste mind. |

I've been reading Zoot Horn Rollo's book on his time in the Magic Band, and it turns out Captain Beefheart was/is a huge Bergman fan. I like nearly every Bergman film I have seen, and I also rate his book very highly. I watched the TV version of Fanny and Alexander again recently - it is difficult to beat.
Did you see Liv Ullman's Faithless, scripted by Bergman? Wonderfully bleak. |

I totally agree on eraserhead i just couldnt get any grip on it, and found the movie somehow disturbing. I myself prefer maybe the semi-mindfucks who gives you a "WTF" feeling but also more explainatory like Mullholland drive, memento.
I also see with mindfuck movies they tend to explain an feeling as a theme. (memento/dark city as in memory) (born teenage killers/pulp fiction to voilence) and many others stating bureacracy(Brazil) etc.
I found themes like memory my personal favourite.
But eraser head hehe have no freaking idea what that was about.

I read up on it there was some case study on the net somewhere, it seems the main theme is religion. The little worm things are sins (hence them coming out of his mouth) and at the end he comits suicide by removing his problem (the alien thing) and is embraced. The case study went through each scene and actually made me think wow that film was damned impressive. Don't think I could sit through it again though. |

I haven't seen Fanny and Alexander yet. It's my big disgrace as a Bergman fan. I rented it and it was the "dubbed" version which I can't stand, so I had to return it. Someday though...
And I haven't seen the Liv Ullman film though I will check it out now (I wasn't sure if it'd be good or not) |

The best version of Fanny and Alexander is the TV version, which is 2 hours longer than the film version. As it lasts for c6 hours they played it on TV here over three nights. Quite brilliant.
FAithless got mixed reviews here. I thought that it was under-rated - Bergman could be detected throughout it (well, it was his script and they were lovers!). |

Man Bites Dog! One of the funniest and sickist films I've ever seen (but I missed the rape scene which my friends say really disturbed them).
I'd also loved: Happieness Zanbrinzkey(spelt all wrong) Point-the five minute exploding house scene is amazing! Donnie Darko Funny Games- really sick French film, where two guys torture and kill a family over a weekend and get away with it, makes a good point about screen violence and what we're willing to sit through and watch. Akira Ring 1 & 2 Rainbow Bright the movie Any David Lynch film

Hows it going bazza, I've seen Donnie Darko and thought it was really great, great music, really funny and also totally weird, I love the bit when Donnie asks the girl if he can kiss her and she says no because theres this big fat in a tracksuit just staring at them. Then later on he's just standing in the street shining a torch into the camera while all the kids are going trick or treating. And the bit about the Smurfs is great too. It's a shame it was only playing in the IFC(art house type cinema) but it comes out on video today here so I'm going to watch it again this weekend!
The scene in Man Bites Dog were the pycho is killing the kid after killing his family and chasing him around the woods is really horrfic, but I thought it was hilarious when they catch the rival documentry team filming a rival pychotic killer and kill all of them for thier documentary. Theres so many other funny bits in it I could'nt go into here but for anybody who has'nt seen it, and Im' sure thiers someone else who could explain this better then me, it's all about the valitity of the "objective" viewer in documentry making, as you probably already know bazza, and is it's really interesting in looking at the lengths someone would go to to make art(the killer see's what he does as "art").

Man Bites Dog is pretty sick, I liked it, but I'm not sure I'd want to see it again.
Ten Percenter, as it stands right now, I don't mind long movies. Right now I'm watching Kieslowski's Decalogue, which is 10 hours, and Fassbinder's Berlin Alexanderplatz which is 16 hours. I'm 6 hours into both..they're both pretty intense. |

"Wild @ heart is another great Lynch movie, "Pinl Flamingos" should trip ya out pretty hard too.Divine eating dog poo will disturb you for weeks after. But for pure laughter, check out "The Dancing Outlaw". It's about a guy named Jesco who huffs gas and carries on his father's tradition of "hillbilly stompin' between 4-wheeling and morphing into his Elvis alter-ego. Big fun. |
