"Gummo". A very crazy movie that leaves you in a strange mood after all is said and done. Another one: "Pi". Wicked background sound, creative plot, all around insanity.

Fear and loathing in las vegas every time.my favourite film. Brilliant script and screenplay, and Depp is brilliant. A very spun out film. Anyone agree?

yah fear and loathing is whacky as hell, Pi is a good movie if you like that kinda thing, along with Requiem for a Dream. vanilla sky is pretty whacky too, and clockwork orange incase you havent seen it is pretty interesting. otherwise just go out and see the godfather 1 and 2, they wont disappoint

it's funny you bring that up "mindfuck movies".. because i was just talking about this with someone.. there's definitely a difference between a "psychological thriller" (which is kind of a vague term as it is) and a true mindfuck movie, in my opinion.. a mindfuck movie involves some sort of twist where you're like "what the fuck?" and leave the audience with some ambiguity, instead of wrapping everything up..
some other true mindfuck films:
JACOB'S LADDER ROSEMARY'S BABY THE INNOCENTS (1960) THE OTHERS (based on THE INNOCENTS)
also mindfuck, but make "sense" in the end:
THE USUAL SUSPECTS THE SIXTH SENSE PI DRESSED TO KILL RAISING CANE DIABOLIQUE DOUBLE JEAPORDY VERTIGO OBSESSION KISS ME DEADLY FEMME FATALE (just saw this and it was horrible, but does qualify as "mindfuck")
i'll try to think of more..

ROSEMARY'S BABY: I just love that movie. I never much liked Roman Polanski, but to me this one is 200x better as "spawn of satan" movie than stupid Omen. Mia Farrow plays it so well and plus it has Elisha Cook cameo and that opening theme (sung--hummed--by Mia). I love the ending too.
THE OTHERS (based on THE INNOCENTS): Haven't seen the latter (recommended?) but I thought the Others was really good. I like to be able to "latch" onto a certain director or score composer and follow their stuff to see if it can be consistently good. So as I started the Others I was digging the opening theme music and was delighted to read that it was composed by the director (ala John Carpenter, but much more elaborate). I was automatically converted. But honestly Floop, I didn't find much ambiguity by the time it ended (except maybe about the dad).
So have you guys seen the disturbing movie the Other? It's like 70s era I think, but creepy. I think it was scandinavian made or something. Weird thing is, I think John Ritter was in it maybe.
The Conversation: I love that movie too. Just kind of droning and paranoid. Reminds me of Marathon Man kind of, but understated. Gotta love Gene Hackman playing the sax in his completely ransacked apartment as the film closes.
Maybe a few others that come to mind: Charade with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn and James Coburn and George Kennedy and Walter Mathau (dang lots of guys) Carnival of Souls: Kind of bad movie but trippy and a good drive-in while sitting in the living room, and filmed in large part of the shores of the Great Salt Lake. Manchurian Candidate: Falls into the latter category of those that are "resolved" eventually, but I love Angela Lansbury and another cool cast (Janet Leigh makes it through the whole movie without getting stabbed to death even once) The Stranger: Orson Welles AND Edward G. Robinson!! I keep thinking of more Hitchcock ones but I guess maybe most of them are less mindf**k and more just mystery: The Lady Vanishes, Psycho etc etc etc.
I havent seen Pi, but as I am always talking about wanting a lobotomy, a friend of mine told me I could get a few pointers from the film's protagonist. Incidentally, does anyone know why lobotomies are no longer kosher? I am serious. I have always heard people say "the practice is no longer a part of psychotherapy." But anyone know why? The only thing I've ever heard is that lobotomies seemed to work for a lot of people.
ps: WooHoo-this was my DitS earning post. My favorite thing to be. |

hah i dont think ive ever heard of a successful labotomy. i mean, it doesnt really make sense that removing part of the brain would be good. the only time they do it is for people with seizures and its such a small and specific part of the brain and i think even that may have some negative side effects in terms of brain functioning.

www.imdb.com learn about movies and shizzle.
Great choices Floop.
My favorite directors, some of which aren't mindfuckers, more mindfarters, but oh well:
Kevin Smith: his trilogy in 5 parts... also anything by anybody from viewaskew(.com) is sick, i.e., Big Helium Dog, Drawing Flies, Vulgar
Quentin Tarantino: Res. Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, etc.
Martin Scorsese: Taxi Driver, Raging Bull etc.
David Lynch (supreme "mindfucker"): Lost Highway, Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive etc.
Alfred Hitchcock: Psycho etc.
David Fincher: Fight Club etc.
Spielberg, Lucas, and Kubrik are cool too...
I don't know... if you seen all thier movies there's a bunch of other good ones...

This is hilarious!! Gummo & Charade in the same topic!! I wonder if Cary Grant has ever been to Xenia Ohio (where they filmed Gummo - just south of Dayton)
I really wanted to see the Femme Fatale but I think johndietzel changed my mind. Good movies guys. But I want to hear of some movies that I have never seen. So keep 'em coming!

john, yeah, you're right.. THE OTHERS does make more sense in the end.. but THE INNOCENTS is left ambiguously. that's why i got them confused. you should definitely check out INNOCENTS if you can find it.
some more i thought of..
VANILLA SKY and ABRE LOS OHOS (the spanish film it was based on)..

What about Punch-Drunk Love? Anyone? That movie is insane...it drove me crazy. It filled me with anxiety and made my mind race a mile a minute...really wild and hard to explain. You feel just like Sandlar's character. I'm pretty sure it's the goal of the movie, and it works very well. Definitely worth every cent.

Hey KingOfSiam, I loved Femme Fatale. I know DePalma doesn't receive good reviews in the USA but he's quite famous in France, and he happens to be my fave director ever. Phantom Of The Paradise is my Nr.1 movie of all time. Anyway Femme Fatale was great, and even if you don't like the movie you gotta love that chick with the mini-skirt and camouflage boots...

Clockwork Orange and any Kubrick film. Pacific Heights Michael Keaton is a bring freako in that one. Also, Requiem for a Dream makes you want to be sober. |

If you didn't like Donnie Darko perhaps you should give it another whirl. It was a "Memento" type movie in that I had to watch it twice before I truly understood the plot. Although there is a flaw in the Memento last scene or should I say 1st scene. I used the easter egg to watch the movie in sequential order and the "Jimmy" who gets whacked at the end(or beginning) some how he knows Leonard Shelby, how? This kind of bothered me that they would have a preassumed "relationship" between two characters. Especially when the fun of the movie is that the viewer learns about characters as Leonard does, except the viewer remembers. Anyways - I thought this was weird. |

No one has mentioned Cronenberg -- Existenz, Videodrome, and Naked Lunch are all thought provoking and strange (maybe grotesque is a good description) although Existenz is the only one I'd call a mindfuck.
Other weird films that come to mind: Dark City von Trier's The Element of Crime a Japanese movie called Tetsuo: The Iron Man.
I liked Donnie Darko and want to see it again. I had to go to the extra features on the DVD to make complete sense of it.
Cohen Bros. -- My favorites are probably Blood Simple and Raising Arizona. The Big Lebowski for some reason just didn't do much for me.
Mulholland Drive is one of my all time favorites. Although people have tried to explain it to death, I think it is best if you just feel the film and not worry about every plot detail.

Lots of really good movies mentioned here, like Tetsuo: Iron Man (very weird w/ an excess of grotesque special effects), Pi (I'm a big fan of that whole numerological mysticism motif), Gummo, etc, etc... But seriously, has no one seen Cemetery Man? It's a English horror/dark humor feature with some surreal elements thrown in the mix. If any of youse guys are fans of the Evil Dead movies, without a doubt, you'll dig it. Also, if you're looking for a reality-based strange, I recommend Spanking The Monkey or Chuck & Buck. |

agree on the girl in the mini skirt and camouflage .. but i'm sorry man, i thought FEMME FATALE was absolutely ridiculous. i actually like DePalma's stuff too, but i feel like he's sort of falling apart lately. i like RAISING CANE, OBSESSION, and DRESSED TO KILL..
the "twist" in FEMME FATALE was too much. too film school cliche. and the whole heist thing in the beginning was just too implausable not to laugh..

Has anyone seen "Killing Zoe"? It is great too...takes place in France with an English and French cast. Great film about a heist which goes horribly wrong.
