So what does everyone think of this movie? Personally, I consider it one of the best films I have ever seen... I have viewed it repeatedly, and have always noticed something new every time.
I love the themes in it....they are universal (love, fate), yet also unusual and quirky (the whole time travel, wormhole thing).
I guess I'm just curious to hear what everyone else thinks of it. Also, I like to hear various interpretations from different people, it often opens up different angles I had never thought of.
So...... what do you all think of Donnie Darko? (I know Shakey Shake will be posting here)

I just saw it recently in the theater. The thing I liked about it is that it can be enjoyed on mnay different levels. If you're into the convolouted sci-fi stuff, you'll like it. If you're into the angsty teen melodrama stuff, you'll like it. If you're into the pop culture '80s nostalgia, you'll like it. If you're into the psychological implications, you'll like it. If you're into Patrick Swayze, you'll like it. Naturally, I loved it. A very rich, textured, symbolic film. Plus, it's one of the funniest I've seen in a while. Unfortunately, I don't think it will age well at all. And I don't see many 50-year-olds giving it two thumbs up. |

I went and DLed all the songs after I watched the movie. It turned me on to Joy Division. I hadn't listened to them in a long time and I realized that they're much, much better than New Order.
How can you not adore the movie that gave us these quotes:
"Sometimes I doubt your committment to Sparkle Motion."
"And how did you feel? Being denied these hungry, hungry hippos?" |

I love this movie...so much that I bought it on DVD...and I don't even have a DVD player. It's one of those movies that just lingers on your brain for weeks after viewing.

A great movie...
I didn't like the phylosophical part, which reminded me of "Back to the future".
But the OS is great, and some scenes are wonderful, like in the beginning, when he wakes up near his bike, with the great song "Killing moon" from Echo & the Bunnymen. It summarizes the whole movie : the bunnyman that is only an echo...I wonder if it was the inspiration for the guy who wrote the script.

this is probably my favorite movie of all time. i'm nervously excited about the director's cut that's going to be in theaters this summer. on one hand, i think we can trust richard kelly, but on the other hand, it's already so good in my opinion, i don't see how it can be much better. |

"first of all, papa smurf didn't create smurfette. gargamel did. She was sent in as gargamel's evil spy with the intention of destroying the smurf village, but the overwhelming goodness of the Smurf way of life transformed her. and as for the whole gang-bang scenario, it just couldn't happen. smurfs are asexual. they don't even have reproductive organs under those little white pants. that's what's so illogical, you know, about being a smurf. what's the point of living if you don't have a dick?"

Why do you guys from the UK constantly repeat the word "cheesy" ?
Is it cool to say "cheesy"? Am I going to get closer to some British girls I meet if I say "cheesy"?

If you get the DVD...the y have this halarious feature that kinda makes fun of the self-help videos as if they were real with commentaries by this woman and her gay counterpart. It's halarious. did I say that already?

This reminded me of the Smurfs way of life discussion in "Slacker".
I loved the movie, and have long wanted to have it on DVD. It bothered me that many people knocked it for being full of holes/superficiality because it used sci-fi, post-postmodernist irony, and teen-drama-angst tropes. I enjoyed it for what it is, and to me, it was a suspense thriller. Go figure. It got me really excited and curious to find out more - which are really good marks for a movie out of Hollywood, any way you want to slice it. The acting, the timing - the "Yeah! Alright! Somebody gets that!" moments....wow, I need to see this again.

This film pays homage to "Harvey," which was a 1950 film about Jimmy Stewart who introduces everyone he meets to his friend Harvey, a 6 foot rabbit, who no one can see but him.
DD also pays a stronger homage to "It's a Wonderful Life," also starring Stewart. DD is Wonderful Life in reverse. Like "It's a Wonderful Death" which is pretty much a line from that song...
"The dreams in which I'm dying Are the best I've ever had ..."
So there you go. Something to consider.

That actually makes a lot of sense. Halloween is pretty much the opposite of Xmas. Well, maybe Easter is, but at least there was a bunny involved. |

When I brought the movie over to my friend's house...(before it revealed that the guy was a pervert) in one of the videos they show.. when he hugs a kid he grabs his butt. My friend noticed it..and I rewound...paused it...and well...there you go...another "easter egg", if you will.

it's a good movie. The whole movie may just be darko's experience, which again could indicate that strange things are happening to him or that he is just a very disturbed young man. I think he, or the director, be very disturbed. Still a good movie though. |

it's more or less that he's kindof like jesus. He sacrificed himself for all of the people he cares about, and in some cases, before he even knew them.
