fairly similar to yours, except he actually did make a conscious choice to go back in time and die, as opposed to everything after the plane engine falling into his house being a dream sequence, as some people have suggested

Are you referring to me? I didn't suggest it was a dream sequence. And it sounds like your interpretation is very much a paradox; please explain to me what happened if I'm still confused.

I should explain: When I say paradox endings are now similar to the ending "it was all a dream," I mean that it is a cop out and a devastating let down.

STITCHES, Crouton-
I agree with you guys. I always thought that he was basically able to see the future consequences of his surviving the airplane jet crash.....so he either stays in his room knowingly (which is why he's laughing at the end) or he simply is able to see that everything in the world has its consequences, and that his death would essentially save the lives of many more people that he cared about.
The one loophole I've noticed (actually, my girlfriend noticed. She demands credit as she sits here breathing down my neck ........ It seems that Donnie would never have been in the situation where his girl was run over and Frank was shot if Frank had not lead him to Grandma Death's house.
These conundrums tie my head in knots. But that's why this movie rules.

Also, have you watched the commentary? The director is a bumbling idiot! He had no friggin clue what he was talking about. To be honest, I did enjoy the movie up until the end but it built itself up too much and the director seemed to think his little paradox idea was novel.

how is the ending a letdown. The buildup of the movie, with all the talk of time travel, logically leads to the ending. It's not like they brought Bobby Ewing back in the end after killing him off.....the exact opposite in fact.

Yeah, I don't see how any other ending could've worked without totally reworking the entire plot. You had to see it coming a mile away.
And, sure, the whole paradox thing has been done before, but it's not a cliche yet. In fact, the entire film is built on a kind of detached irony. Many parts of it are retreads or "homages" as others have remarked. To only focus on the fact that the ending isn't original seems indiscriminate. |

Ok ok, maybe I had just got too picky about those sorts of movies during the time that I saw it. I don't remember the meat of the story well enough to recall talk of time travel so you may be right, maybe the ending was appropriate. Given that, you have to admit it was a paradox and while many of you think that's a good thing I for one am very tired of them.

you must have seen the movie quite a while ago to not remember talk of time travel....it's a pretty major plot point

but that was frank's whole job. frank was supposed to help make it so that donnie had no choice but to send the jet engine through the wormhole. |

the thing is, though, Bunnysuit Frank wasn't the same guy as the Frank who ran over Donnie's girlfriend, as weird as that may sound. Bunnysuit Frank was kind of like the Christmas Ghosts in A CHristmas Carol, or Jimmy Stewart's angel in It's a Wonderful Life.....helping Donnie to realize what he had to do to fix everything
but that was frank's whole job. frank was supposed to help make it so that donnie had no choice but to send the jet engine through the wormhole.
