Okay, upon thousands of loyal recommendations, I asked for seasons 1-3 of Mr. Show for Xmas..I'd seen little bits of the show, but never enough to judge it. Every credible source in the world claims its brilliant, so I was excited....

and...

I've watched the first 3 episodes, and it's simply NOT funny. what is wrong with me? I actually thought episode 2 was very well done, but it seems like it could have been a glitch.

Pros=I like the format, how all the sketches blend in to one another, but it is very Monty Python (not that they'd deny that). I like the lack of celebrity impressions, but again, very Kids in the Hall.

Cons=the joke topics, I kept hearing how original this show is. In the first 3 episodes there have been the following which are staples of every single sketch comedy show:
mullet/white trash jokes
"Cops" parodies
making fun of white people acting black (the most overused joke of all time in my opinion, though it might have been semi-original at the time)
Hitler jokes (I don't get offended by making light of Hitler, it's just such an overused bit)
lots of gay jokes--way too easy.

My other major qualm--when they pretend to be different characters, it never seems to click. It seems like they're obviously acting, where other sketch comedy shows it just seems the characters are more believable, no matter how ridiculous.

So--please enlighten me why this show is great...and does it get better after 3 episodes? I'm still really trying to like it.

i don't even know what this show is, so excuse me, but you've only seen 3 episodes out of 3 seasons, maybe they got better?

Dude, the show rules. I've always just thought it was funny, very funny. If you have to ask why then maybe it's just not your thing. I'd need to watch them again, it's been a while, to be able to really do what you ask and give you some reasons. Keep watching, maybe you will change your mind.

They have the movie Run Ronnie Run - THe Ronnie Dobbs Story. Very funny! It has crazy-ass cameos by pretty much every funny comedian whose face is known. The show is crazy on fungus. Maybe Bob and David just aren't your type of funny. Who do you find funny?

I like lots of the other "crazay" sketch comedy shows, Kids in the Hall, The State, Monty Python. Spinal Tap, Bill Murray, John Belushi. Also a big fan of black humor, hmmm.

I haven't watched enough of it to pass final judgement, but what I saw was not funny at all. The State kicked ass...I never really found KITH to be funny. Curb Your Enthusiasm, though, it's fan-fucking-tastic.

KITH had some great moments. Not familiar with Mr. Show, but I've seen David Cross on some talk shows and heard his CD, and he is a very flippant and opinionated comedian at times. Often gives his opinion on current events. He is also hilarious. I wonder if Mr. Show is anything like his act.

In my opinion Mr. Show is the funniest sketch comedy show ever, or at least tied with Kids in the Hall.

David Cross' standup is very political and he is not afraid to piss on religion without regard for the crowd's feelings. I think he's funny, but Mr. Show was a collaboration with several other comedians/actors/writers, and although some of the messages the viewer might infer would coincide with Cross's more explicit stand-up material, it's much less confrontational. In general although I think at times the sketches were trying to make some kind of statement it was a lot more subtle than his standup. Of course, you said you think he's funny. I'd say if you like David Cross's standup then you'd love Mr. Show.

Yeah, there's something wrong with you. the first season (except for episode 2, which is beautiful.) is sort of an acquired taste after seeing season 2 and 3. I reccomend episode 1 of season 2, the rest of season 2 is pretty good, I watch it more as sketch by sketch than episodes though. Episode 2 on season 3 is also a beautiful thing. If you don't think the gay porno sketch, or the pit-pat sketch, or for you KITH fans, the change for a dollar sketch are good, you have severe humor problems.

I've heard Cross's new cd, its pretty good but I don't care much for "the president is dumb har har har" jokes so about 1/3 of that I could do without. ANSWER YOUR TELEPHONE.

Okay, i've watched the first 5 episodes and now I can say I've acquired an appreciation for it, it's growing on me. I didn't like Kids in the Hall at all for a long time either, and as it stands, it's wildly uneven, which is what Mr. Show seems to be. Just a matter of seeing enough of the funnier moments to give the lagging ones a chance.

Yeah, you have to see the subtlety in some of the sketches to really appreciate them. That and the complete and utter nonsense is good.
