...because I was just watching the HBO original film "Don't Look Back" starring Eric Stoltz (it's from 1996 or so) and they killed off Ethan Suplee's character, and didn't even have the decency to show him get murdered. I mean, they could have at least had him kick some ass before getting capped. I'm pissed that he went out like a punk. The scene just cutaway from some thugs harassing him to an outside view of the apartment he lived in and a gunshot is heard. Okay, so I guess it's more dignified to not be seen shot if one doesn't fight back, but I wanted to see Suplee put up a fight. For those of you who don't know who Suplee is, he's a huge guy best known in the 90's for roles such as Willam in Mallrats who couldn't see the sailboat, Seth in American History X, the huge guy who was Ed Norton's neo-Nazi friend, and he was in that show Boy Meets World a lot, playing a friend of that main character Cory's older brother. Suplee is a great actor.

I only remember his role in Am History X, but it was pretty funny. He could ball although I think he got away with a couple of fouls.
But, seriously, how many no talent hacks has Kevin Smith kept at a living wage over the last ten years? That man must be stopped. |

I agree Owen. Kevin Smith bores the ever-lovin crap outa me. I can't stand his attitude, and don't agree with all the acclaim and undeserved notoriety he has recieved. Clerks was good. The rest sucks donkey b**ls. Flame away, if you must, I will stand by my position.

"Chasing Amy" was his best, apl. One day, when you're old enough, you'll appreciate it. I promise

Yeah, Kevin Smith is a little uneven as a filmmaker. Chasing Amy and Clerks were good but the rest seem to ramble between one quasi-amusing scene to another.

Clerks was interesting, but really surfacey. There's zero depth in any of his films. Mallrats was just a complete embarrassment. Chasing Amy, well, the turning a gay chick over to the good side thing is pretty cliche especially with all the other sappy moments. I watched like half of Dogma again last night and the entire cast totally mailed it in with no emotion. Only Kevin Smith possesses that power. If only he were to use it for good or, better yet, for awesome. And the teenager philosophizing/theologizing grows tiresome after, I don't know, 10 minutes. The sad thing is that I've watched all these, some more than once. I haven't seen the Jay/Bob Strike Back one yet, though.
And now he's gonna ruin Fletch. |

I agree totally....Clerks was nothing but brilliant dialogue (even if some of the acting was subpar--it was, after all, made for like $10), and Chasing Amy was an amazingly fucked up love story

Kevin Smith's run on writing "Daredevil" for Marvel and "Green Arrow" for D.C. comics was amazing. I like his comic book work alot better than any of his movies, although I do think that Dogma was pretty good. He's looked at as one of the ultimate superstars in comics, because of his ties to directing. Kind of like that is J. Michael Stacskinsky, (sp) the creator of "Babylon 5." Most comic book fans are sci-fi dorks (like me) so when you have a sci-fi movie director writing them it makes the fanboys drool.
Oh yeah! Forgot about Joss Whedon -- creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He wrote a series called "Fray" about a vampire hunter in the future for Dark Horse Comics.

I thought Kevin Smith was god when I was 19, 20, but then he released Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and I've tried so many times to understand why he would write and direct such a horrible film by watching it, and I've never figured out what he was thinking. Now I don't think he's even that great of a writer or director. What I once found to be brilliant dialogue now sounds really contrived, over-intellectual, and hackneyed. I've just grown beyond it, I suppose.
