Ok, I have 4 Pere Ubu cd's and was wondering who else listens to them? I have The Modern Dance, Dub Housing, New Picnic Time, and Terminal Tower. Now I've had these cd's for about a year or so and so far I've come to the conclusion that Pere Ubu takes awhile to grow on you. It sort of creeps into your skin and then you start liking these songs all of a sudden. I like pretty much all of "The Modern Dance" and "Dub Housing" has some great songs I love "Navvy" and "Ubu Dance Party" and all of a sudden I've fallen completly in love with the synth track "Blow Daddy-O". So "Dub Housing" is slowly creeping onto me more and more and at the moment I like one song off "New Picnic Time" and I sort of Like another. I haven't given "Terminal Tower" much of a chance though. I figure mereubu is a fan for obvious reasons. So I'm asking does anyone reccomend any other good Pere Ubu stuff to seek out to listen to? They have so many albums it's a lot to explore and it's really hard to find and get a hold of. I'm also interested in David Thomas' Solo stuff too. So to wrap up my post...
Anyone else know what I mean about Pere Ubu growing on you really slowly? Anyone reccomend any later pere ubu albums? I hear they did some good poppy stuff later on. Any good solo David Thomas Stuff? Bueller?

i've got songs by them, off the top of my head i've got heart of darkness and final solution. both great songs. i downloaded a new album, from mp3.com or whatever it was, the place where you could sign up for a free trial and frank had some stuff on there too, as did danielson famille... anyway, raygun suitcase i think it was called, never really got into that.
in addition to the above, anyone recommend a good album to start with?

The poppy albums are difficult to find. Out of print or something. You could check their website for details: http://www.projex.demon.co.uk/ Of the later stuff, i have St. Arkansas wich is pretty good. I took this next quote from their website. Mr. F(rancis)?
"Some years ago we were touring with a popular young group. They were friends. One day I was talking to the leader about this & that, passing the time, and we got around to the internal workings of our respective bands.
"You guys got a reputation for being democratic, you know, a communal group of equals and all that," I said. "I got this reputation for being an unreasonable dictator. So I suppose you vote on things, hunh?"
"Sure," Mr F said.
Me: "You're a four piece. What happens when there's a tie?"
Mr F: "I've got two votes."
Me: "So the only way you get out-voted is if all three of the others stand together?"
Mr F: "I suppose but if that happens we do what I want anyway.""

It really can take a while for Pere Ubu to grow on you. You gotta build up a tolerance. I have more of the older than the newer, but I like St. Arkansas a lot. I got to see them last year and they were amazing. Dave Thomas is so cranky.
[re my forum id--I'm definitely a fan of Ubu the band (although my husband is moreso) but I'm also into absurdist theatre, and Pere Ubu took their name from the main character in Jarry's Ubu plays. Seemed like a good way to combine my weirdo music/weirdo theatre/weirdo mother concerns.]
Mr. Ubu highly recommends: Datapanik in the Year Zero & The Art of Walking as well as Raygun Suitcase.

They're definitely among my favourite bands. Somehow I still haven't made myself listen to St. Arkansas yet, but that'll come soon. A chum of mine with trustworthy taste has told me it's great. I'm more into the old stuff. One that I haven't seen mentioned yet is Song of the Bailing Man, which for me is one of those "personal classic" type things. Also Dub Housing and The Art of Walking, most excellent indeed. I listen to those three the most.
Unfortunately for myself, I wasn't so mad about some of the late-eighties stuff I heard. Some of it was even boring (!) to these ears. Ray Gun Suitcase, though, I think more of the original members came back or something - can't remember exactly - and it was better, but I still prefer the early stuff.
The only "solo" David Thomas that I've heard is Monster Walks the Winter Lake. It's got some pretty interesting tunes, and on the first song he calls out names so you can tell he's basically playing with most of the same guys anyway. I don't like it quite as much as the old Pere Ubu stuff, but maybe I just need to give it more of a chance.
Not certain exactly what it would be, but I'd be willing to give up something important to see these guys live. Maybe an earlobe...

my dad owns every ubu album and lot's of David Thomas (including a massice box set) I've listened to some things and I like it but you know, it's still my dads band, so I don't listen to it 20 for 7
my favourite quote (from their ceedee plus): Pere as in Pere, Ubu as in Ubu, Pere Ubu

Modern Dance and Dub Housing are absolutely essential. I loved them as soon as I heard them, probably because I instantly heard where a slew of great bands got a lot of their ideas from. Light years ahead of their time.

Huge freaking Ubu fan...they are incredible live...I've taken every opportunity to see David Thomas perform in any incarnation - saw a 'greatest hits' Ubu show in 2000, DT & 2 pale boys in '01, all three nights of "David Thomas' Disastodrome!" (which Frank Black was a part of) this year, which featured not only a more recent-focused Ubu set, but the devastating reformation of Rocket from the Tombs, who I saw again twice more last month. Ubu is nearer and dearer to my heart, but nothing will ever supass the devastation that Rockets hath wrought. Having seen both bands do it, "30 Seconds Over Tokyo" demands to be played as a no-holds-barred noise apocalypse.
I'd recommend "Variations on a Theme" and "Surf's Up" as being the best/most accessible of Thomas' extra-Ubu work. Variations is pretty easy to find on vinyl, but is only available on CD as part of the David Thomas "Monster" box set, and there in massively restructured form. I like both versions but I do consider the original to be essential.
Also worth mentioning is the late Peter Laughner, original Rockets and Ubu guitarist. His only official anthology is out-of-print but lots of quasi-official bootlegs can now be had via handsomeproductions.com. I wish I could recommend the guy selling them as much as Peter's music. Peter was a massive talent. For those who don't know Richard Lloyd from Television took his place in the current Rockets lineup, and there will be a 'new' RFTT record next year; I've got it, it's incredible.

I only have Dub Housing, and slowly but surely I've come to love it. That first song, Navvy, must have made an impression on Charles Thompson, for I can hear a lot of Pixies in it. Especially Bone Machine. I've heard Cloudland is quite good, and very poppy, but it's out of print.
