I have been very reluctant to say anything of the sort prior to this...but I was speaking with my brother (whom is also a huge Pixies and FB&C's fan). We went to three shows in T.O at the end of October. I have seen Frank and the Catholics play about 15 times and in different cities. When he performed the Teenager of the Year and Cult of Ray material on tour there was never a question that you were probably not going to hear the Pixies, and nor would you really ask to hear it. The first time I heard Frank do 'Wave of Mutilation' (UK surf version) was in Syracuse for a pre- Frank Black and the Catholics album release tour. They performed three Pixies songs. Undoubtely the crowd went nuts and began demanding more. It was astonishing for me to hear any Pixies material live. But here is my dilemma. Frank has made us wait to hear the old material (and I am not complaining because it sounds outstanding) but I think I would like to hear a more complete set of the FB&C's material. They have just released two albums and have a score of other material (not even including some great b-sides). Where have the other albums disappeared to? Does anyone else agree with me? Or am I just being an idiot? Maybe put the Pixies on the shelf to age again, and pull them back out in another ten years when people realize what a treat it is to hear them again?
I bid a good-day to you sir!

Well I'll say you are right but, when you see him just feel lucky I have seen him with and without the Catholics and they both rock. I just saw Frank Solo with Dave Philips. He played a small set and I really like every song off both CDs he only played one off Devil's Workshop. I would have like to hear so many songs and yes he played like five Pixies Songs. Pixies were great but, Black Letter Days is the best CD every. He opened with Jane the queen of love I still get a chill when I think of his voice and that guitar. He has now hit the Blues. by the way the show is about the fans and too many people really are stuck on the Pixies I love em and realize the person who wrote Monkey gone Heaven wrote Cold Heart of Stone etc. |

I haven't seen him perform any Pixies songs except in the 1999 show when I saw Holiday Song and Wave of Mutilation. It was great to see Holiday Song, and I'd love to see Gouge Away and Nimrod's Son, but yeah, I wouldn't mind at all if he cut the songs out of his set...especially if he's really, honestly wanting to get away from the "former Pixies frontman" title (which, really...he'll never lose...but if he stops playing Pixies songs, at least he'll have a good excuse). But hell, maybe he enjoys playing those songs. If it's something he's doing to please himself, then I'm all for it. If he's just doing it to please the people who come to the show waiting to hear Pixies songs, then he should just drop em.

Ah, i dunno. I love his new albums jsut as much as the next guy, but I love hearing him play Pixies songs. It's not that they're "Pixies" songs, its that they're old songs, and it's always fun when a band or a guy throws in a few songs from his early work. If Frank neglected to play anything other than songs he'd written in the past 2 years, it'd make me think he had some sort of problem with his earlier work. I like that Frank still acknowledges all parts of his career. Playing old Pixies tunes is like saying "yeah, these are still good songs, I'm not going to pretend I didn't write them" He proved himself that he didn't need the Pixies to play successful live shows, he proved it for 5 or 6 years. But honestly, most solo guys play stuff from their old band. Lou Reed plays VU songs, why not?
Also, not everyone in the club owns Frank's latest album. Some people go see him just because he's Frank, and he's a legend. Sprinkling a few oldies in there is going to make some people happy. This could mean anything from people who are only caught up till Dog in the Sand, to people who only have Teenager. I don't know many people who own every album by any band, I'm a major completist, so are most people on this board, but the average joe in these days has like 6 actual cds and about 20 burned ones (p.s. burned cds annoy me). Frank definitely hasn't turned into a Greatest Hits act. You know, like if you see Bowie, Stones, U2 or someone, they play like 2 new songs and the rest of the set is their major hits, same songs every tour. I know Frank hasn't any "hits", but he does have well known fan-favorites like Where is My Mind, Los Angeles, Headache, Superabound, Men in Black, ext. When I turn people who don't know much non-mainstream music on to Frank, they never understand when i say "you know, he probably won't play that live" "why not??" Because he has 15 albums of material!
Ok i'm going on a major tangent here, but basically, i'm pro-Pixies songs...although i'm guessing Frank is getting tired of Monkey Gone to Heaven, maybe he should drop that one.

Am I the only one that never liked Monkey Gone to Heaven? It's one of those songs on Doolittle that I've always skipped over along with Here Comes Your Man. When I got Doolittle I had no radio station playing the songs or friends telling me what songs to listen too. In fact I didn't have any friends who knew who they were. I had only my ears to tell me which songs I prefered over the others. The first four songs off Doolittle, debaser tame wave and bleed, convinced me even more than ever that this band was special. To me, one of those first four songs should have produced a radio hit but that was not to be.
Why HCYM, MGTH and LLLY were the singles is beyond me. None of those songs have that famous, fast - slow / loud - soft, dynamics that critics love to compare Frank to today.
That being said. I could care less if he ever played MGTH ever again.

Thomas -- I agree somewhat on Monkey. I liked it back then but not as much as so many other songs on that album. Sometimes now I skip HKYM & MGTH, sometimes I'll listen. But for me, I'd rather hear just about anything off of Bossanova at a FB&C's show than MGTH.

Velouria and Velvety back to back would be awesome.

i guess i'd just like maybe two pixies osngs per concert. i'd prefer to hear other fb songs that don't see the light of day much. i would not mind if he played bossanova or trompe songs, though. that would be great.
i loved monkey gone to heaven the first time i heard it, mostly because of the way he screams "god". gives me chills. but it was gone down considerably in the pecking order as of late.
