Finally, the third movie - Return of the King - is in theatres today! Did anyone check it out at midnight last night? Anyone else going to see it today. We're going to the first evening show, feels like I've been waiting forever. 9:00 can't come soon enough...

Jop, that's great! I was worried that he might not be able to outdo the second...
I was talking with someone at lunch who was reading the books after seeing the movies, except she decided to get a headstart on three and read in advance and somehow became confused. Aside from the interesting perspective you might have seeing the movies than reading the books as opposed to the other way around, I really find it difficult to see what exactly could be construed as confusing...

Really,
I´m saying that not only Tolkien is a genius Peter Jackson is also one If you´ll ask me, he should film The Hobbit, The Silmarilion, Roverandom, Tom Bombadil to name a few.
Gollem/Smeagol is one of the highlights of 2 but he´s great in 3 too I won´t name the other cool things/scenes because I don´t want to spoit anything.
Mmm, I wish I had gone to the marathon.

Saw it tonight, fantastic as always. PJ's managed to outdo himself again. It got several rounds of applause, especially at one bit with Legolas being cool: you'll see... I dunno, maybe the ending was a little duff, but I still think it was the best of the three.

I cannot wait to see it, I guess it will be on DVD first though as it takes ages for films to come out in the cinema out here....... still yet to see Kill Bill. If the new rings movie beats the second one (which in my opinion is one of the best films I have seen) then I am well excited.

You would think they would have been able to write a good ending. Peter Jackson had done such a godd job linking them all that you would have thought he could finish it properly. Ah well. Maybe he's not the writing genuis everyone makes out. |

I have had absolutely no interest in these movies since the first one was released. I've seen portions of the first one many times, and thought it had some great moments, but I don't think I could sit through all 3 hours of that, let alone invest time in the entire trilogy. I'm not too into the fantasy/adventure films anymore.

While I think Jackson has a lot of great qualities as a director, I do believe he is overrated. But who isn't, right? And I'm sure for many years before Jackson hit it big with fame, he was underrated. But I didn't think Meet the Feebles was all the spectacular. When something ultra-fucked up wasn't happening, I was quite bored with the film, and even many of the shocking moments kind of bored me. I enjoyed the massacre at the ending, but other than that, there were only a few moments here and there that I thought were worth my time. I suppose that 15 years ago, it was harder to find a movie that pushed the envelope in so many ways, but... eh, not a masterpiece.

Applause in cinema's is a weird thing that doesn't happen in Holland Nobody does that over here They don't cheer, they don't yell, they don't clap their hands, nothing. If I would do that, people will say: Ssshhh, hush, I'm trying to see the movie, you asshole!
When you think of it, it's quite strange to applaud. Who's going to hear it? Like Peter Jackson is behind the projector. As long as you don't go to a premiere (where the crew attent) it's useless to clap.
It's interesting that it's common in the US and very very uncommon over here

Well, that movie was in-fricking-credible. I'm completely blown away by it. Say what you want about Peter Jackson and his past projects, he took on some of the most beloved books of our time (well, maybe not our time, but...) and certainly challenging in terms of bringing it to the screen, and pulled it off better than I or anyone could've expected. I was not bored for a second nor even out of the movie. It felt like watching history unfold.
Clapping and cheering only happens here on opening night when the people who are REALLY excited about the movie, whatever it may be, are all at the show. It isn't distracting, it's really communal and lends further excitement to the film, maybe even making it feel more like you're actually seeing it than that it's a film. It felt like I was watching history unfold.
I'd love to talk more about it, but I don't want to spoil it...
I'll be seeing it again over Christmas.

The only time Ive heard an applause in the cinema was in Goldeneye when James Bond manages to skydive through the door of his plane and pull the plane out of a crash dive to escape from the Ruskies.... in general people don't applaud in the UK either.

It's not all that common in the US either...the only time I remember it was when SW: episode 1 started and the Lucasfilm logo came up on the screen.....of course that movie all went downhill from that point

I thought the movie was great, but am I the only one that was really pissed at movie theater seats by the end of it? It would have been fun to see the marathon perhaps but I think I'd be cripple by the end just from sitting in those uncomfortable things.

This going to sound goofy but all my points on clapping in the US were based on the stories of my friend who saw SW:episode 1 in the US on the opening night!!!! So yeah, you could say all the above is right
second goofy point: a friend of me who went to the marathon in Rotterdam (I saw LOTR 3 in a small theather in Spijkenisse) and people were clapping and cheering too when Legolas did that cool thing So my whole point of people clapping in the US and folks being quiet in the Netherlands is not solid at all.
I still think is weird to applaud

A masterpiece. I'm really kinda speechless otherwise. There were SEVERAL points in the movie where there was applause or cheering. I've seen applause at the Lucasfilm logo, or at the end of a movie (though it's rare), but never many times during. Amazing.
Non-film highlight: The obligatory "movie piracy is wrong" commercial comes up. Many people boo and hiss (silent movie style), then, during the screen where it says "downloading is stealing", or something to that effect, someone in the balcony snaps a shot of the screen. It was hilarious. Here's this big ode to non-piracy, and then a big flash goes off. Kudos to the theatre cut-up. |

Ok, I was saving this for the people who didn't saw the movie yet, but since word was already out on the internet I think it's better to share anyway People who don't want to see a spoiler don't scroll down I will leave a huge space for people who want to keep the surprises untill they saw the movie.

Fans Outraged at New Character in The Return of the King By Brian Briggs Wellington, New Zealand - A recently leaked trailer for The Return of the King has Tolkien fans outraged over the apparent addition of a new character - Jar-Jaromir. The scene depicted in the trailer shows Jar-Jaromir shouting, "Gondora gonna fallsa"; he then trips over a corpse and knocks down a couple of Uruk-hai.
Producers of The Lord of the Rings trilogy confirmed the addition of the half-brother of Boromir and Faramir.
"While The Two Towers is performing better at the box office than The Fellowship of the Ring, we are worried about a demographic that is skewing much older than desired. More mature fans are very good to have, but it's the younger fans who buy the merchandise. That's really what brings in the bucks on a movie like this," said producer Tim Wilcox.
"People complained a lot about Gimli just being there for comic relief," continued Wilcox. "We answer that criticism by directing the humor through Jar-Jaromir in The Return of the King. There's this funny scene where Jar-Jaromir decides it's best to hand the ring over to Sauron, but then he drops it and kicks it into Mount Doom. Hi-larious."
Purists, miffed by the deviations in The Two Towers, were so enraged by Jar-Jaromir as to be rendered speechless. A less pure, calmer fan who was able to form words said, "Tolkien mentioned a lot of different races and creatures, but never a Gungan or even a half-Gungan. I think I'm going to vomit."
One fan tried to rationalize the move. "Maybe the Star Wars universe and Middle-earth intersect. Middle-earth certainly is a long time ago and why couldn't it be in 'a galaxy far, far away?' Nothing said it's our earth." He then broke down and started crying.
Director Peter Jackson explained how the Jar-Jaromir character was added after all the other footage had already been shot. "That's the brilliant thing about digital editing and graphics. We didn't even imagine Jar-Jaromir in the movie until a couple of weeks ago, but now we can just edit him right into the key scenes. I really think it's going to be a hit with the toddlers."
Jackson added, "I just love it when he shouts, 'Yousa steala precious from meesa!'"

I love you, billgoodman. So funny.
We're re-viewing Two Towers Friday nite and then hoping to snag a babysitter for a Saturday showing. You know those movie trailers with the line: "If you only see one movie this year, make it blahblahblah (insert title)." I used to think, "What poor pathetic fuckesr only get to see one movie a year?" And now I know: parents!
