When I bought DW and BLD, I just listened a few of the first, but now I am in it again and it's no so bad as I thought
"Out of state", "Kingly Cave" and "San Antone" are the best pack of songs since
"..Pong" "Thalassocracy" "Abstract Plain"
And don't Know how you feel, but everytime I listen to "whiskie in your shoes" I feel i can't control my body or my mind (like in the pixies era)
Maybe I feel too positive but also "Bartholomew" seems good to me. (Not the best, but not the worst, wich is, I think you'll agree "Are you headed my way")

C'mon Devils workshop is an amazing album, whats the deal with all these critisms of it, it rocks serious ass. Not so bad you say, how many times did you listen to it? once? Being a Frank Black fan , with his level of consistency i find two listens and the the hooks ,riffs and lyrics have already dug their claws in. Velvety is a screamer of an opener. C'mon leave it in the cd deck and enjoy it.I know its all about personal preference but this IS rock and roll. |

Personally, I prefer Devil's Workshop to Black Letter Days. They're both great, but DW is lean and mean. "Velvety" cooks like the Stones, I love that shit. |

I think "velvety" was definitely intentionally given a stones-y feel...even the vocals sound like an imitation of mick.... I definitely prefer BLD to DW though, by far

C'mon (as you repeat so much),
C'mon man, if I say something about DW, and I repeat i don't like the album so much, is because I listened to it not once but lots of times. And I stopped listening to it because it didn't like me. That's so easy like this. Let's not make a battle about who has listened more to FB...
It's just a problem with the songs.
But now i like em more. Has'nt it happened to you some time with FB music? I think it's an usual thing

the people on this board are NEVER going to agree about which FB album is the best, Sam....it's all opinions anyway, and opinions vary from person to person

DW is one of my favorite FB albums.
I like it better than: BLD, SMYT, & DITS......much better, actually.
DW reminds me of the older FB stuff (first two solo albums), and it reminds me of the pixies, too.

in my opinion, teenager of the year has more pixies-esque songs than the other solo albums I've heard (and no, I havent' heard them all)

It's hard for me to believe that anyone who listens to Frank Black can find anything wrong with ANY song that he has ever done. Sadly, you people have proved me wrong once again. I just got a-hold of COR yesterday and within one listen I knew that I would like the whole album, and of course, I do. S'prolly just me I guess, but I don't think I'll ever dislike anything he does until he dies, which will piss me off.

Devil's Workshop has been my favorite album since the first time I listened to it. It's very raw and fresh sounding like FB&TC but at the same time it has better instrumentation and better overall production in my opinion. All of the songs rock and it contains 2 of my favorite songs of all time: San Antonio, TX and is Kingly Cave. Heloise is pure Frank Black at his finest; the Scene is a great rocker; Fields of Marigold is beautiful; Velvety takes you back to the early days and absolutely rocks as does Whiskey in Your Shoes; Out of State is beautiful; Mordern Age is a great song; Are You Headed My Way would be like the coolest ho-down song ever; and Bartholomew is probably my least favorite on the album but it still kicks ass. And the album is the perfect length

I prefer Black Letter Days because it seems to have so much more energy, plus the songs seem more finished....it just seems to me like Devil's Workshop was a collection of all the songs he didn't feel were quite finished

I prefer BLD to DW...there are some good tracks on DW, but it can't hold a candle to BLD. Out of State, His Kingly Cave, Whiskey, and The Scene are some great tunes, though.

Did I make a mistake?
I scrounged together enough cash to get one album. I didn't have BLD or DW yet. Based on the overall impressions I got here, I went with BLD. At first I liked BLD better than SMYT. Lately I'm putting them in the player pretty equally. But I still don't own and have not heard Devil's Workshop. I think my wife got it for me for Christmas, so I'm waiting on buying it.
I guess it really doesn't matter as I'll end up with all of the above albums soon enough. I'm certainly not disappointed with any of Frank's albums....but I think Dog in the Sand probably is on a higher pedastel at this point than anything that's come since. (TOTY is still untouchable).
I'm just so grateful that he puts out albums as frequently as he does. |

i also recently rediscoverd DW. the song that i most overlooked was The Scene. its short but sweet. i still skip over 'are you headed my way'. heloise - i love towards the end when frank takes it up a notch singing "hel-o-iiiiissseeeee" with the background vocals coming in |

Even though I make a conscious effort to respect everyone's opion and entitle them to think whatever they want to think so long as it does not significantly hurt others, I can't tell you how great it feels to know that others enjoy Out of State and His Kingly Cave. Two of his greatest songs ever. His Kingly Cave is suprisingly non-rootsy. |
