I am a "skipper" I must confess. When I buy an album I'll listen to it all the way through a few times, but for the rest of it's life I'll tend to pick out my favourite bits. I don't really see each album as a rounded, complete, all-encompassing artistic "statement" - for me it's simply a record of the best dozen or so songs that an artist has at his or her disposal at a given time. The artists that I love (and I love FB) are those whose albums contain the most good stuff. I'm not sure I lost anything from throwing on (as I did this morning) "You Ain't Me" without hearing it in the context of the rest of COR. Set me up for the day though! |

I don't skip. I usually throw on 5 cd's and just let the random to the work.
And now, your moment of zen... |

You should listen through the album in its entirety at least the first 5 spins. Give the songs time to grow. If you still don't like a track by then, then I'd say skip it for awhile and try again once or twice.

I listen to whole albums because I'm a really big perfectionist and for some reason I couldn't live with myself if I skipped songs or didn't finish an album. This is one of the reasons why I prefer vinyl over CDs because I feel ok somehow if I only listen to one side of the record and put it up.

Heh, yeah, I hear that... same reason I hate making mix CDs with Frank's stuff on there. I put all these great FB/Pixies songs (among others) and realize I have about 5 CDs worth by the time I'm done. And then you start trimming and you say to yourself, "I can't believe I'm cutting this song." Makes you feel guilty and dirty all at the same time.

I "skip" on some FB albums (Pistelero) but not others (TOTY). Sometimes I will spend the day needing to hear a certain song. It seems like TOTY is a single song.

It all depends on my mood and the album. There is no rote procedure.

some albums are meant to be experienced as a whole...but others really are just a collection of songs

I rarely skip.
I have 2 modes of listening to cd's. The 5 CD changer where a perfect blend of artists and content must be arranged before the shuffle (not random, shuffle, there is a difference) button is pressed. Usually I have to temper my selections here for the wife and kids, but, FB is easy to work in.
Then when I am on my PC I like to listen to 1 disc at a time, generally in order with the headphones on for complete rock-focus on the tunes.
There is a place for both and neither involve skipping for me. |

well, dallas, with all that time you spend obsessing over the perfect way to listen to music, do you ever forget to breathe? Or do you do that at the same time you take your daily OCD pills

If someone tells you they don't like Nowehere Man and skip it, do you believe that they understand the genius of Rubber Soul (British version), let alone The Beatles?

I'm not a skipper at all, but as for listening to a whole album at once, I rarely do it because all my CDs are mixes. But my friends are skippers, and I just had to add how jarring it can be to be listening to a CD and have half the songs skipped right when you're starting to enjoy them. Ugghh. Arguments.

I tend to play cds the whole way through. I've got no real problem with skipping, but people that do it non-stop are especially irritating to listen to music with. Several of my younger friends (early/mid twenties) are unabashed skippers, seems they've never heard any of their cds all the way through. Then again, all those guys listen to shit for the most part. |

I think the most irritating experience ive had with a skipper is when i was driving once and my friend in the back seat would dive through the middle just to skip a song....for almost every song on the cd even if there was only 30 seconds left on the song!!! How I survived...no wait, how HE survived is beyond me! In general though I dont think its about the music, some people are just thorough and concentrate on things better. Like people who talk through films, or people who flick through the tv channels, or people who play computer games for 5 minutes then confess to being bored. The worrying thing is, I find myself in these restless moods too and more frequently as i get older. Seems my focus and concentration are wiltering and I long for the good old days where I could sit down on my own and watch a movie thoroughly or sit at the computer for hours playing games or listen to albums repeatedly. I dunno if it comes from working long hours or what, but it annoys me that when i do actually make the time for whatever i may be doing i dont get the same satisfaction as i used to get. Maybe its nostalgia or in need of a girlfriend or what...i just wanna get drunk instead! Ah well, any people with any suggestions feel free to condemn my lifestyle with me! |

I skip songs and complete albums. My loss... I just put in self-titled after it was shelved for many yrs and finding it not so bad. Going to give Cult and Pistolero another chance. :)

Time. Never enough hours in the day, for me anyway. I know I miss not always feeling so rushed and impatient.

I wasn't buying Frank Black's new releases from Pisterola to the double album. I find it difficult to enjoy these albums as much as the current hypes of Show Me Your Tears.
Nothing beats waiting for a new release, buying it that day, and listening to it a million times.
...though he loved to rock and roll... http://www.bagleytree.com/index_000002.htm...I, myself, am trying...
