Today's random song of the day is Freedom Rock.
What do you think of it?
lyrics My name is Chip And I''m different I don''t conform I wear a different uniform
I''m out of the blue And so you are, too Let me sing about one thing that''s clear That nobody owns The pleasure of tones That belongs to a guy with no ear
They tried to give me advice Down at the record shop I said sit down boys This may come as a shock What''s all I listen to It''s all freedom rock
How can you free me When I''m free? I am free
My name is Chip And I''m different I don''t conform I wear a different uniform
I''m out of the blue And so you are, too Let me sing about one thing that''s clear
That nobody owns The pleasure of tones That belongs to a guy with no ear

"I don't conform / I wear a different uniform..." Haha, I love that.
A powerful, inventive, amazing song. Pre-Catholics Frank at his best.

My first exposure to Frank Black which turned me on to the rest... love this song.
My life was complete when I got to hear it live last year right here in Saskatoon.
Also a lot of fun to play, especially if you have a competent drummer kickin' around.

Dean, you're right about the drummer. We used to play it with my band at the University, and it was extra-difficult to play the drums part. I still have a video of my band playing it and it looks like I have 6 arms. We didn't play it much though, but it was fun to do it.

Brilliant, brilliant tune. Fiery intro, lots of tempo changes and even a little reggae sojourn in the middle. You couldn't ask for much more really - one of my faves. |

I love how everyone in the audience sings this when they play it live. Complete with the "WOO WOO!" It's so fun! |

My "favorite" frank black song, the first solo Frank I heard. I love this song. My band played it too, it was a little ambitious drumways. |

Stitches, you need to invest in a new cd. Immediately.
Perhaps as an early Christmas present to yourself?!

I think you're right....either that or one of those cd skip cleaning kits.....I'm completely clueless as to how it got scratched too. I take good care of my cd's and I dont remember ever letting anyone borrow this particular album.....yeah, my mind's made up. I'm buying myself another copy!!!!

This is a great song. The drums are amazing. If I had to choose a favorite off of TOTY this just might get the vote.

I'd have to go with "superabound" or "headache"

This was performed live on Conan O'Brien in 1994; a good choice. |

Does this song remind anyone else of The Who as much as it reminds me?

Wow, FB fans in agreement on something.
Freedom rock, IMO, is the best song on TOTY, and one of FB's best ever. |

I think everyone knows exactly which cool guitar part I dig on this song. That whole section that leads up to..."My name is Chip..."
Also jive on the crowd reaction sounds... "They tried to give me advice...down at the record shop" Gasps! "I said sit down boys...this make come as a SHOCK" Applause.
How can you free me? When I am FREE...Woo woo!
I remember I was dating this girl that I had listen to the album back when it was first released. She said something to the effect, "I really like the name Chip. Enough that I'd want to name my kid that." Then she just kind of looked at me with this really intense kind of look. It was the same look the lady from the Church of Scientology used on me when she was trying to get me to join on a day when I went to their little "fee IQ test" booth up in Hollywood. A kind of boring (penetrating) manipulative look. Come to think of it...that girl never smiled either. (Back to my story) I totally froze. How do you respond to that? I think I said...."Yeah, its a cool song." Shortly thereafter we broke up. I'm not sure if she is a Frank Black fan.
After that I just dated girls that were into field hockey players. I went out for the team the next day. And the next thing you know... |
