Hey there guitar players..

I've got the POD 2.3, and i think it's pretty good, especially for recording discretely..

But now they've gone and put out a new one.. And this new one has a lot more effects, and 24bit I/O's..(rather than next-to-useless 16bit).. And a USB connector which may or may not allow for a digital out..

Anyone got a chance to play with this baby?

You can use the Tube Pre setting as a bypass of sorts. If you get one of the rack mount Pods like Pod Pro, or one of the Amps, it gives you a speaker simulator option which usually takes care of the funkiness when going into another amp. The problem is that the Pod simulates a speaker combo for each setting so it's like mic'ing a 4x12 and then sending that signal to another amp. You get a lot of phase weirdness. Having digital outs is the best way to go because it removes that extra step of D/A - A/D from the amp to computer (the D/A in the Pod ain't the greatest) I haven't tried the new one, but it seems much more sturdy than the old one. The foot pedal is much better as well. I've had to repair my floor board a lot.

the tube pre really isnt the same though as just going straight and the pod has this noise that drives me nuts. it sounds like interference from a computer

That's weird, I would have thought the POD would sound alright thru an amp. Just cuz it's got a good reputation. I have a ZOOM505II and it sounds absolutely awful thru my marshall. I only use it for direct recording and it sounds great.

I've used a Pod into a Fender Twin and have gotten good results. I approach it more as an effects box when I do that. It gets a good Swervedriver / My Bloody Valentine sound. If you really want to rig the two together and have a bypass, you could always use an A/B box.
