Now I don't necessarily cry, cause you know that I'm not a crier, but there are songs that give me severe chills, severe goosebumps...a few to point out
Sonic Youth - Tunic (A Song For Karen) [it's about Karen Carpenter...if you know about her life and death, and listen to the lyrics, how can you not get chills? "I remember mom, what you said / You said "Honey..." / "...you look so under-fed." Sooo spooky]
Nirvana - Unplugged [the entire album gives me chills...it's depressingly beautiful, from Kurt's solo moment in Pennyroyal Tea, to his last sigh in Where Did You Sleep Last Night?]
These are the only ones I can think of now...

The songs that get me every time are the ones that are sad and beautiful all at once. Do You Realize? by Flaming Lips; Arriving On A Train by Freedy Johnston; Thom Yorke's voice on certain songs; I See A Darkness by Bonnie Prince Billy (okay, maybe there's little beautiful about this one); Love of a Lifetime by Firehouse (just kidding) |

Heh.
Cat Stevens - Trouble Throwing Muses - Delicate Cutters (or Hate My Way--take yer pick) Kate Bush - This Woman's Work Radiohead - OK computer will usually make me weep at some point if I listen to the whole thing. ditto for: Tom Waits - Blue Valentine Tori Amos' Little Earthquakes is kryptonite for the PMS-afflicted. Winter, anyone? REM - Wendell Gee Patti Smith - Paths That Cross CSN - Cold Rain Pavement - Stop Breathin
OMG, I can't stop! I may have to go make myself a little boo-hoo mix--it'll be the Joy Luck Club of CDs.

River - Joni Mitchell Forgiven - Deb Talan Brickbat/Tank Park Salute - Billy Bragg Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen The Weakness in Me - Joan Armatrading (sp?) Why Can't I Have You? - The Cars
But lately the one that makes me cry more than anything is Mister Cellophane by John C. Reilly from Chicago. I recognize it's kinda gay but he is so fabulous and that song just GETS ME every time! |

Aw, thanks. My husband actually got me the Joy Luck Club on DVD for my b-day last year, and I'm afraid to watch it again. I'll need a big ol' box of Kleenex. I remember watching it when Z was an infant and assuring her (through my tears), "Don't worry, baby. I'll never let you grow up to be Chinese!"

Jeff Buckley, Lilac Wine. Where do these keep coming from?
Bartholemew, is the Bonnie Prince Billy album worth getting? It got rated top ten albums of the nineties on Pitchfork, but I'm not sure I trust them particularly...

Of course it all depends on the listener (and I don't blame you for not trusting Pitchfork)... It is not upbeat, there is at most a glimmer of hope at the end, the sound is very minimalist. But to me it is a MASTERWORK. Took me three years to like it because of its slow pace. But if you can appreciate slow pace as I now can, then YES. Buy it immediately. And then don't be suprised if you find yourself obsessed with buying the rest of the Palace/Billy catalog.
By the way, I thought of a new sad song, the one in the middle of the movie Toy Story 2. Think it's by Sarah McLaughlin. Kills me every time.

"Sea Anemone" by Jets to Brazil gets me every time. Actually a lot of Jets to Brazil makes me cry especially "Perfecting Loneliness". "Miss Misery" and "Needle in the Hay" by Elliott Smith. For some reason "The Swimmer" makes me cry most of the time, that one is really confusing. "Lovesick" and "Not Dark Yet" are recent Dylan songs that can make me cry. And most anything by Hank Williams, definately "So Lonesome I Could Cry" and "My Heart Would Know".

Oh dear lord yes! "When She Loved Me." My daughter went through a heavy-duty Toy Story 2 phase this summer and would sing it endlessly to her Cowgirl Jessie doll. We'd get all sniffly (or giggly, depending on the mood) listening to her.

Wicked Little Town, both versions, from the Hedwig and the Angry Inch soundtrack. A lot like Plato's speech from The Symposium.
