I love hearing the theremin (or synthesised version of the theremin) on records. The classic Pixies exponent is of course Velouria. Another song that springs to mind is Mysterons by Portishead and Mercury Rev have employed a similar(ish) sound on the last two albums (via a bowed saw).
Any other gems out there that I should be listening to??

the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion used to use it pretty extensively... dunno if they still do - having lost interest in their recent records...
i can't remember specific songs Jon Spencer uses it on, but either the album 'Orange' or 'Extra Width' should be full of it.
and to anyone who thinks the White Stripes are pretty nifty, listen to 'Orange' and prepared to be very impressed.

I agree about the JSBX. The best part is that they have one on stage during their concerts, and at the end of the gig they destroy all their gear, except the theremin... I think Dig My Shit (b-side) has a lot of theremin. Air use it a lot too. Can't think of any other bands but I'll try to find more.

Can't believe we forgot the Beach Boys. Good Vibrations has theremin.
Actually http://www.thereminworld.com/bands.asp lists 521 (!) bands using theremins.

You can buid your own theremin pretty easily, from a kit by PAiA called the Theremax Theremin- we have one, but it's not working right now :(
You may know also, but BigBriar (Bob Moog's company) sells beautiful lusty theremins in nice wood cases for $$$. That documentary about Leon Theremin, and finding out about Clara Rockmore, got me into them, as I think it did for alot of people.
Hey check it out - it's "Theremin World"!!! http://www.thereminworld.com/

Yeah, the Theremin World website is awesome, check it out. My favourite band that uses one on a regular basis is Fishbone. The first time I saw them I didn't have a clue what the hell it was, just that it was the coolest thing I had seen. I tried to build one last year, but it really didn't work at all. I'll buy one eventually; played one a couple times and it's tough but fascinating.

hahaha!
There is also one in David Byrne's live cover of Kraftwerk's "The Model" that was played on Sessions at West 54th (I think). The cover was incredible, and the theremin was a perfect addition. The woman playing it seemed to be having a great time - it takes alot of class to play a theremin without looking funny.

Forget all these bands and get the "Forbidden Planet" soundtrack LP. It has more theremin than all of them combined.

Ok, I learned that the sound on Good Vibrations isn't a real theremin but a so called Tannerin, don't know the difference though. On the front of Jon Spencer's 'Orange' (really not yellow) is a drawing of a theremin. JSBX usually destroy their stuff (not really destroying everything as only Jon is the mad one) because the theremin don't work like they should.
And there's an episode of I.M.Weasel with lot's of theremin playing.

If anyone is interested, the original theremin player was a woman named Clara Rockmore who was the lover/protege of Mr. Theremin himself. She performed in the 30's with orchestras, and there is a CD available (mono, of course) of piano/theremin duets that was recorded in the 40's. Rockmore's work is absolutely stunning...she plays the blasted thing with such emotion, it sounds like a cosmic angel. It really is an interesting instrument. Anyway...if anyone is interested, I will look for the cd and distribute info.

For anyone interested, the documentary is called "Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey", and it came out in 1995. Looks like you can buy it in a bunch of places online.

The first usage of the theramin in the pop world was by The Beach Boys on Pet Sounds, "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" (my theme song). Right?

I haven't seen that Theremin documentary, but I think it's more about his life than just the instrument. Based upon the book I read about him, though, I'm sure the film is also quite interesting. Guy had a hell of a life.
