I put this on a couple of times the other day and it made me realise why I used to love this album so much. Plain and simple it rocks. It was such a change from cult of ray it just has something different. I love how its just that little bit more spastic and off kilter than anything else he had done solo (probably still is), King and Queen of Siam is a perfect example of that. Pistolero came next and it was sort of a poorer FB&C. Then another change came with DITS and its difficult to compare the two seeing as they are so different. Then the doubles were sort of baby DITS's. Now onto SMYT. Yeah its got some nice songs but its taking things nowhere. In seems every two albums there's a distinct change in his music. With FB&C it just seemed more free and as though they were just playing off the top of their heads some of the time. The structures and solos make it so much more interesting than the pretty much straightforwardness of SMYT. Frank Black was put on this earth to make 'rock' music, the sooner he starts again the better.

If some of this doesn't make sense its cos Im not to up on my musical lingo. The main thing is I know what I mean.

The songs are simpler structurally, but I think that in most cases that's made up for by more complex and dynamic instrumentation. I suppose it's not for everyone, but it's just a different kind of complexity to enjoy.

I think FBATC's is better, but, SMYT is great a well. I have my preferences but I absolutely enjoy the ride that we are going on following FB's music.

FB said he tries not to put out every little thing that dribbles out of his brain but I am one who wishes he would. I wont worship every drip and drab, but, most of us on here are so into his process and musical odyssey that there is something to be gleaned from any thing he puts out.

Although Frank isn't known for having much dynamics in his music, ShowMYT has a lot more empty notes, or silences... which is a preference for me.

I think that comparing these is like comparing apples and oranges. I feel like they are barely related siblings and most clearly show Frank's evolution, as an artist and a man. Not to say he couldn't rock out like the Bronze album again, but just that things change. People change. Music changes.

Anyway, I love them both, they are brilliant and equally special babies.

I can't be the only person who thinks Pistolero is stronger, song for song, than FB&TC's.

Pistolero has some excellent songs, better than many on FB&C however those songs are few and far between. The rest are a bit mediocre in comparison. Thats not to say I don't love Pistolero to.

I had to reread this one. Are you just talking about solo and Catholics stuff, cos the guy pretty much invented dynamics in alt.rock...
I still disagree with the statement whichever way you put it.

I think the guitar playing by Lyle Workman helps give the bronze album more depth than can be achieved by pure rock on the later albums without him. Workman was truly amazing on TOTY and the bronze album and gave rich guitar textures to the songs more than can be achieved by everyone now. I feel like there is more complex sound on the recent albums to make up for some of this lapse in guitar creativity. Now personally, I love Pistolero and all the new stuff and, well, I guess we just need to trust in Frank. He knows what's good for us.
