make a tighter BLD...Cut 5 songs off it.

BLD would have been a tighter and possibly better album if it would have had its rough edges cut off.

So cut them, list 5.

(here are my cuts)

Southbound bevy
Black Rider (first One)
The Farewell Bend
True Blue
Wispering Weeds

(hard for me to come up with a 5th!)

I would never cut any f black songs, this has just been a fun exercise....

I dunno about cutting Whispering Weeds, it's such a good closer (the two Black Riders are merely bookends so I don't really consider them openers or closers per se, but...).

I suppose I might swap that one for 1826, if we're talking about making the album more snappy, tight, and trim.

yes, I like WW too, CoF.

Like I said, hard to pick a 5th song.

I do like WW less than 1826, however. Sure, 1826 is Frank Black doing a Gregorian-Chant-thing but it is artsy/punkish and ends strong....actually one of my favorites on the album, when I'm in the mood for it, which is most always.

I would cut both versions of Black Rider, Black Letter Day (I must be the only person who's not very fond of it), 1826, and Whispering Weeds. The remaining 13 would be an incredible album.

dougit, True Blue is amazing in its charming simplicity and keeping with the "tradition" of putting a minimalist/acoustic track in the mix. I am hurt. <g>

I agree with the rest.

Southbound Bevy. The second Black Rider. Whispering weeds. True Blue.

can't think of a fifth to eliminate.

Valentine And Garuda *

* Picked because you specified 5...Black Letter Day is easier to let go than Valentine...the first 3 I would chop off in a heartbeat.

I dunno about cutting songs from it. I think the main problem is the order of the songs; they just don't flow right. But if I must cut 5 out (God I hate to do this) they'll have to be:
1. Black Rider 1 - replaced with the 2nd Black Rider as the 1st track. 1826 - It rocks but I don't feel that it fits with this album
3. Farewell Bend - should have been a b-side along with True Blue on what should have been a CA Bound single
4. True Blue - see above
5. 21 Reasons - Could have been a great song...if it was 3 minutes shorter. I think it was a great idea to leave it off DITS and it should have stayed like that for BLD

That's my revised BLD and I might also change the song order around a bit

I actually have never been huge on Black Letter Day either, it always seems like a lyrically/melodically simpler knock off of Robert Onion to me. Over time I've come to appreciate it as a "rocker" to help spice up an album of mostly mellow songs.

I agree with El Barto on hte much revered 21 Reasons. Good song for sure, but just too long, especially in the solo area.

In fact, any cuts I would make to BLD wouldn't be songs, it would be in the guitar solo-area. A little too "Skynyrd" for me.

All that aside, I think it's a truly diverse and memorable album, and I never grow tired of it during it's running time.

after "southbound bevy" i start to lose interest in the CD. the songs thereafter are ok....nothing spectacular. the first half, though, is really really good.

If I were Frank I would have cut both versions of The Black Rider, to put them on the California Bound Ep...

1. California Bound
2. The Black Rider #1
3. Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day (for example)
4. The Black Rider #2

Btw, does anybody know why no single was released from BLD?

What? Cutting songs off BLD?? That's insane. It's my favorite FB album, and I don't see why it would be better with less songs. OK, if you insist, cut Black Rider #2. That's all I can accept.

I think BLD days would be much improved if it was a bit snipped.
the 5 i'd take off:
The Black Rider x2
Whispering Weeds
1826
Farewell Bend

i was never too keen on black letter days (the song) until i heard it live when it absolutely rocked, so it gets to stay.

but if these 5 were taken off, a rearrange of the song order would definitely be required.

I'm absolutely astonished to read people voting for "Southbound Bevy", "Chip Away Boy" and "Valentine & Garuda" as dispensible tracks from BLD.They're among my favourites! It does strike me that the FB fanbase is split between those who prefer the heavy stuff and those who enjoy the sheer craft of his songwriting.

I can list the five songs that I would remove if I had to, but in the end, I'd rather have a full CD with as much FB material as possible, even if some songs are weaker than others.. they're still FB.

I can't imagine losing a song like End of Miles or Whispering Weeds or ...

My least faves are 1826, Whispering Weeds, and The Farewell Bend, especially the first two. Most fave are End of Miles, Jet Black River, How You Went So Far, Valentine & Garuda, and True Blue. 21 Reasons sounds a little dim compared to the bootleg version that circulated around 1999(?), but it's still a great track and one I never skip.

This isn't a totally absurd topic, but he who suggests cutting Chip Away Boy, is a totally absurd thinker. I'd cut the final Black Rider, 1826, and I'd shorten 21 Reasons and Jane the Queen of Love (Just a lil).

I cannot believe End of Miles and 21 Reasons would be cut for you guys. Those are two of my favorite songs he's ever done. And why so many votes for Farewell Bend? Woosh.

"I Will Run After You"- I can't listen too it, the original is too good.
"The Black Rider"(number one)-it was a thousand times better when I saw them do it, both times.
"True Blue"
"Jane, the Queen of Love"- maybe it's better towards the end of it, I never get that far.
"1826"- maybe it's too little, too long.

I don't see how people don't like "Whispering Weeds"- it's like an outtake from "Graceland".

both Black Riders.... as they are not Franks songs
I will run after you
1826 (although skip this one)
whispering weeds

thats my five if you count 2 BR's.
