Dear Frank, I'm new to this forum and I need your help with a bit of a problem I'm having. A few years back, I became an inhabitant on the central coast of California. Although this has many, many benefits, (the main one being easy, quick access to soft shelled tacos), there still something missing. You see, I grew up on the east coast, in a city north of Boston (Okay Lowell, don't rub it in). Being the music fanatic that I am, I took full advantage of the great music scene, and the awesome variety of artists that toured through there. I've seen them all. From the Sugarcubes to Superchunk. The year before I moved out here, I traveled all over the place to see you. I saw you so many times I was afraid you'd have me arrested for stalking. Now I'm in Morro Bay Ca. A few of my east coast friends have come out and they think the place is "wicked awesome!" The music scene is not so great though. Well, RATT did swing through on their "We Sucked Back Then, And We Still Suck Now!" tour. But I missed that one. What I'm trying to say is, PLEASE FRANK! PLEASE HELP ME!!!! Do you plan on coming up this way? At least to Santa Barbara? I have a couple of fresh new Frank Black converts that I am certain would be more than willing to make the trek to Santa Barbara. Oh, Gene loves Jezebel swung through here too, but now it's only Gene or something. |

it's true.. i can't deny it.
my Frank-seeing spree has mellowed out though (now that i'm working).. and now that he's living in Portland I don't know if we'll be as spoiled as we used to be here in LA |

Actually, isn't that really old (possibly the first) interview with the Pixies from the UMass Lowell radio station? I think it is. The one where the manager doesn't shut up. Anyway, the Pixes played Lowell. I saw Bruce Springsteen in Lowell. BB King is playing Lowell soon. There was a character on Wings named Lowell.
Lowell is a lovely town Just take Route 3 to tha’ Lowell Connecta’.

Got sucker punched by a super nice guy from Lowell, Mick Rooney (not the 100 yo actor). Was way back in '87. Both drunk of course. We were stationed in Sigonella with the 'Bees. FUN TIMES!

i feel like i'm still on our honeymoon, honey..
here's my "personal gigography" (mind you, this isn't counting Pixies shows.. i saw the Pixies play at the Palladium and the Ventura Theatre). notice an abundance of shows in 2002; i was unemployed and decided to become a solo Frank groupie.
there are people here who have seen way more shows, which makes me feel less insane.

Hey Floop, You are king. I'm aware of that show in San Fran, but I'm working six days a week and was uncertain what kind of billing it was (solo / acoustic. Longer than a half hour). I know these trivial matters should not make a differance to any real FB fan (which I am one) I just thought if he's back in the states, I may be able to catch him closer by. I work for Amtrak driving trains, and actually have to take off two days to go see that show. I'm considering it though. Hey realmeanmotorscutor, When you get a chance grab me a slice of Esspresso's. All that "California pizza" propaganda they feed us east coasters is bullshit! The shit sucks! |

king, you are king!
you should just hijack one of the trains and take it to SF. or not.
i believe the show is solo, but that can be better sometimes..
re: pizza: even as a native Californian, i have to agree with you; nothing beats New York pizza. nothing. California Pizza Kitchen is ass, yuppie food. |

i think it's just something about the air and the water in NY. there's some mysterious reason why the pizza there simply rules. cuz there's a place here, Lamonicas, that supposedly ships their dough from NY, but it still doesn't taste the same. in theory, you should be able to replicate NY pizza anywhere else on earth, but it's just not true..
pinkashtray, i'll check out Reno's. i'm on a pizza thing lately.. i'm assuming you're referring to Abbot's Pizza for the 1.50 slice? Abbot's is my favorite pizza in LA, and luckily, close to me. i go there all the time.
the bagel dough thing is what does it. |

New York pizza is like Euro pizza, except bigger. All schloopy in the middle. Yuck. And that Chicago pizza is all bread. Double yuck.
In Petaluma Calif., we got Pinky's Pizza, where it "ain't no limp crust sissy boy pizza." The All-meat combo is the best. Sauce? What sauce? All you need is that orange grease that oozes from the meat!

If you're going to live in California you have to stop using the phrase "soft shelled tacos". |

Joe...
I'll take Sal's Italian combo at the New Yorker (Petaluma Blvd) over Pinkys. BTW, I ate there before the FB&C show at the Mystic last year

Whiskeyshoes, We must be about the same age 35 (ack!) because those are some of the same bands I caught at UCSD. Thelonious Monster - I loved that band. UCSD had a great tradition of free bands and beer (if the underaged could score a wristband) on Fridays.

Okay, no more soft shelled taco's. Only crabs from now on. I just had never had any other kind of taco, than the hard tortilla variety. Which back east sucka de ass! Perhaps you could help me with some other west coast idioms, that I am completely in the dark on.
1) What is a parking STRUCTURE? Is this where I can park my car? Or a place to buy really trendy clothes while still sitting in my car? Back east we have parking garages. How come you don't call everything structure this or that? You know, like the eating structure, the watching movie structure, the place where people design new structures structure? 2) Why do my west coast friends go into hysterics when we go to the supermarket and I say "Grab a shopping CARRIAGE." Which usually elicits this response; "Shopping carriage? What did you bring a baby? PPPllleeahahaha!!" 3) Back east we have "COOK OUTS" out here you have a "BARBEQUE." What's with this one? A cook out is where everyone gets together, drinks beer, plays horseshoes and eats food that's been prepared on a barbeque. I mean, the barbeque is an essential component of the cook out. Not the event itself. Can I go to Sears and buy a cook out? No! Could I go to Sears and buy a barbeque? Hell yes I could!
4) If someone asks me to do something, and I'm in the mood to do it, I may say "Sure I'm UP for that!" Back east we would then go and do it. Out here, this rapidly causes sharp words of scorn directed at me from my apparently much hipper friends. I am quickly corrected that "No, you are DOWN for that. I become confused and all that sharp talk usually brings me DOWN. Sould it actually be bringing me UP? Any help would be greatly appreciated on this one.
5) And last but not least. Why does everybody call me "Barney" out here? My name is Jason. Thank you! Drive through.
