Now reading: The Teammates (David Halberstam)
Favorite author: Steinbeck maybe, I don't read much fiction, Edmund Morris's two biographies of Teddy Roosevelt are excellent, so are Taylor Branch's on Martin Luther King Jr.
Best book: Catch-22

Mr. Dave Noisy,

It's been almost ten years since I read the Dune series. I enjoyed Dune, Dune Messiah and I think God Emperor of Dune the most. I think they're around 5 or 6 novels that Herbert wrote.

Anyway, a little bit ago I finished THE BUZZING by Jim Knipfel which overall was disappointing. I recommend a non-fiction book by him called SLACKJAW.

Right now I'm reading Conversations with God vol. 1-3 but I don't recall the author. Just remembered a great horror novel I read, called COME CLOSER. Really good, very fast moving. HOUSE OF LEAVES is good too.

blah blah blah

My wife is a tom robbins fanatic. Still life with woodpecker, jitterbug perfume, another roadside attraction. Mostly his earlier stuff. Hunter s. thompson's the proud highway is interesting if you like him.

I've been on a sci-fi kick for a few years now. My favorite books are "Armor" by Steakley, "Starship Troopers" by Heinlein, "Forever War" by Haldeman, "The Stars My Destination" by Bester.

I'm reading Asimov's robot series now, "Naked Sun" book 2. I love going to used book stores to search for old out of print Sci Fi books.

I'm not a fan of Fantasy but I did like "Druids" by Llewelyn. I wanted my sons middle name to be Vercingetorix, one of the main characters and true life Gallic King, but we settled on Karac.

I read this book years ago...called Dry Water. I can't remember the author, but i do remember it wasn't particularly well written, but the story was so creativce and amazing that i couldn't put it down...and this was before i started doin drugs. Also...recently... i have finished No one gets outta here alive-Jim Morrison biography... very good book, found it a t a garage sale for $1.
Also, i just finished Sidhartha...beautiful beautiful wonderful book about the human condition and how hard it is to cure.

I was not looking for no LOVE affair.

I read everything. I just finished "who's watching out for you" by Bill O'Reilly. It's short, yet has some interesting insight.

Right now, I'm supposed to be reading my school textbook for finals, but... School bites.

I am reading A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN by Betty Smith which I never read before. And also this book called THE NOONDAY DEMON - An Atlas of Depression by Andrew Solomon. It's kind of a mix of reference and personal stories. It's pretty interesting.

So, they really DO grow in Brooklyn! I'm so glad.

It's a good book. I think girls who are about 9 or 10 (the age of Francie, the heroine) would like it. I am enjoying it - I wish we had read this in school instead of GRAPES OF WRATH which bored me back then.

Just finished "To Have or to Be?" by Erich Fromm; great insight as to the "objects owning you," uh, "philosophy" that's been incredibly prominent in pop culture (of all things) since Fight Club came out. Reading Jimmy Joyce's "A Portrait of the Artist" as a young man for the umpteenth time and Jon Krakuer's "Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith," - a nice look at what drives a person to become a fundamentalist (in this case, the focus is on the Mormon faith), and what propels their ideology. Going to start reading the Genesis chapter of the Bible and John Locke's "Two Treatises on Government".

I just finished "Haroun and the Sea of Stories" by Salman Rushdie. It was for a class and was ok; I didn't like the end so much.

I'm finishing up "Lost in America" by Sherwin Nuland.

Why does everyone love Siddhartha? It's hardly his best work though there is a new translation out that I'm dying to read.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is fantastic as is Portrait of the Artist, but stop there with Joyce - go no further.

CHoS, so weird that you should mention On A Pale Horse. I was just thinking about that book yesterday. I've had it for a while now; maybe I'll make it my next read.

Just finished: Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood

Currently reading: Joshua Then and Now by Mordechi Richler

I seem to be on a Canadian author kick. That's why I've got "On the Road" by Keruac up next. Atwood and Richler are both excellent authors by the way.

re: steinbeck - I really like Cannery Row, but I think Tortilla Flats may be my favorite.

I've never been able to finish the first chapter of Dune (after many tries).

It's about time to reread The Wind-Up Bird Chronicles.

The First World War by James Keegan, Manifold Origin by Stephen Baxter, planning shortly to read another James Michener book.

James Michener, has anyone read much of his stuff? The only two I have finished is Tales of the South Pacific and Bridges at Toko-Ri but I have a whole crapload of his other works that I haven't got to yet.

Haven't read much in last couple years, sorry to say. I used to devour books. But DUNE is a wonderful book...read that in 9th grade and was obssessed over it. I do like the science fiction of Stanislaw Lem. And my favorite fiction author, Bret Easton Ellis, has not written a word in like 4 years. The movies they base on his novels however are stupid. As all of Hollywood is. Hmmm...

I just recently finished a collection of short stories by Saunders called Cilvilwarland in bad decline. If I'm not mistaken, it was upon a reccomendation by LBF. I highly reccomend it. I'm debating whether or not to re-read Catch-22, or start Sometimes a great notion. I loved Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, so I'll probably go with that.

Sorry You are mistaken.

If I could reccommend something it would be anything written by:

Donald Barthelme. He is my all time favorite author, best know for his short stories.

LBF, do you mean "A Brief History of Time"? I started reading that recently but probably won't have the time to finish it.

Ulysses is a buch of rubbish and Joyce should have been stoned for publishing such a pretentious work.

Last three books read have been Battle Royale by Koushun Takami, Holy Blood, Holy Grail, and Everything and More, a Histroy of Infinity, by David Foster Wallace.
Last night I couldn't sleep so I began to reread the Hobbit. I'm four chapters in and not completely enjoying it, but past experience has shown that the last fourth of the book makes it all worthwhile.
As to the Dune Books, I read them back in high school. They're pretty decent. The first one is the best, an extremely good read. Dune Messiah's a poor follow up, Children of Dune is better. God Emperor is.......odd. Heretics and Chapterhouse are interesting, but very different. The focus shifts a great deal from the original, but that's to be expected, since they take place several thousand years after the first. The new books written by Herbert's Son and Kevin J Anderson are quite terrible. Hacks, I say. Hacks! Okay, bye

I want to be a singer like Lou Reed
