I like the 'dad' polls the best. I'll be the subject of these soon.

If you can ever find the Essential Calvin & Hobbes Anthology, check out the illustrated poem at the start, the art is actually pretty great. "The monster, in his consternation, demonstrated defenstration."

I'm sure the suspense is killing you all.
This was actually painted by Picasso when he was about 17! I think he rejected 'conventional' 19th C art soon after.
The mark of a genius. (I could barely tie my shoelaces when I was 17)

Picasso is not my cup of tea. I guess I'm just more into the artists who improve more with time. I know that Picasso was trying to make a concious rejection and portray art in a way vastly different from his contemporaries, but I just never liked the end result.
I'm sure you all know people who say "THAT'S art?!!! My five year old son (or daughter) could draw better than that!" Well, maybe a five year old couldn't grasp the concept behind what was supposed to be represented by drawing in that style, but I can't help but think of this reaction when I see Picasso's art.

Glacial. I here what you are saying (partly). I think that Picasso effectively earned the right to paint in a 'simplistic' style. He had proved early in his life that he could paint classical pieces of high quality (e.g. the Old Fisherman) but this obviously didn't move him artisically. Some of his work is very simply constructed but it should be remembered that he worked in many different mediums, tried his hand and sculptures, clayware and ceramics.
'Guernica' is an incredibly powerful piece of 20th C art which, I think, gets across the message much more effectively than it would if painted in, say oils with conventional figures.
What about your Wolf Kahn painting:
Pretty simplistic. My 6 year old could have a stab at it!!

Some Otto Dix maybe?
Take the Fauves, add one teaspoon of morphine and two sleeping tablets and you get Die Brucke...
Agit-PrOP-ART? Here, have some Banksy.

In response to Bedrock, I don't think that his "Old Fisherman" is a very good classical painting either. Picasso's unconventional style seems messy to me; maybe I'm just a perfectionist or as an artist maybe it's just not my thing. It all just boils down to personal taste.
I wouldn't defend Wolf Kahn as his work is somewhat simplistic, but it just appeals to me for some reason. Something about the way he uses colors.

I'm intrigued/repelled by John Currin. In a good way.
Kinda the same way I felt about some Dali stuff when I first saw it(not that they're the same).

Any of you guys come across Sam Taylor-Wood? She's a British artist who works mostly woth video. If you get the chance visit the Tate Modern in London to see her still life vanitas film, or her setting of Strauss' Elektra at the Tate Britain. I also saw a bunch of William Blake illustrations the other day - those are awesome, although hardly 'modern' art.

Wasn't that painted by a young Picasso?
