Anyone else think the Catholics sound better with one guitarist+Frank? Seems to me that some songs, specifically "Haemaphroditos" sound overcooked with all those guitars. Saw them live in London the other night and I thought Dave Philips played all the meat and potatoes stuff and Rich Gilbert was a bit peripheral. Even his keyboard stuff sounded out of tune. |

They have exactly as many guitar players as they need in my opinion that may differ from yours but that's what makes the world go round. |

I'm big into guitar, guitar, and more guitar and that is one of my favorite things about his music. Having said that, Frank's newer music definitely has less of the clean sound of his first album or even late Pixies. Maybe that is the whole live to 2 track thing, I don't know. Still great though. |

The two guitarists are playing other instruments on most of the songs. Gilbert plays piano and pedal steel and Phillips plays pedal steel too.

I like the Pistolero and the first FB&TC albums more than recent stuff, and I think the more streamlined approach of those first two albums is a large part of why that's so. But I guess that's just a matter of taste, like all art. I miss Mr. Black's telecaster sound in the mix, although I think "Nadine" sounds like a tele. |

Oh stop it, all of you! If you were my little boys, you know what you'd be doing? Playing a nice, quiet game of checkers, that's what!
It's always been my perception that Rich is an incredible live performer and that Dave Philips is sometime a little off (both times I've seen him, there have been a few false starts/sour notes), but I guess the balance inevitably changes from show to show. Maybe Rich just had an off night--he's usually a crazy man. Anyway, I think they each have their own specific purpose (see how I was careful not to say "special purpose"?)

I think Rich Gilbert is a great guitar player (and I even embarassed myself by walking up to him and shaking his hand before the gig), but he did seem to be in 'show off' mode on this tour. Most of his solos were like watching the guy from AC/DC on speed and slightly off kilter. I was reminded about Frank's quote about 'less is more' in recording and wondered whether Rich felt this didn't apply in gigs. Davey P was on top form in Brussels and Shepherds Bush and surprised me by outshining Rich. There was overkill on some of the three guitar songs, but, as has been said, they need both Rich and Dave for most songs as they do keyboards and the pedal steel. I think we're getting a bit picky here , though. This is one of the great live bands and we are blessed to see them.

Lyle Workman certainly wouldn't have had any problems with those Van Halen type solos. |

never enough pedal steel, i think they should have 3 pedal steel parts in each song and ditch distortion all together!

He toured with them during the summer 2000 tour. Not sure about any other time.
