Maybe I should write this on 5th of december
but I'll be bussy celebrating 'Sinterklaas' myself
So here I go:

On 5 december the dutch and also belgium people celebrate
a holiday/festival/celebration that's called 'Sinterklaas'

here's a picture of Sinterklaas:

Looks familiar? That's possible, your own SantaClaus is a direct incarnation of Sinterklaas. So is the word Santaclaus...
Sinterklaas comes from the catholic saint St. Nicolas who came from Turkey and gave things to the poor.

The celebration is almost the same as with Santa, childeren (who believe that Sinterklaas exists) put their shoes under the heart/fireplace and Sinterklaas puts gifts and candy in it.
His slave....uhm assistants are this people:

pretty political uncorrect, hell yes, they are called black pete's (zwarte piet) and are like the smurfs, you have a gift-pete, a leader-pete, etc. Of course the image of the black pete comes from the slavery, but you find little people complaining about the political uncorrectness here. The story goes the pete's are not blackskinned, but they get black from climbing in fireplaces to give presents (yeah right). The Black-pete's always do dumb things in 'Sinterklaas-stories', like messing up the gifts and stuff.

Sinterklaas (who comes from Spain with a boat to Holland every year) knows every kid by heart, he has a book and in this book is written if you are nice kid. If so, you'll get presents. If not, Sinterklaas and the zwarte pieten will put you in a bag and take you to Spain (what happens next nobody knows, maybe torturing?), this element of the Sinterklaas story has been erased since the last 20 years. It was always a good way to keep your childeren good behavoired, but it's a bit strange don't you think? putting childeren in a bag and take them to Spain, ohh yeah the bag I'm refering to is the same bag that's full of presents and candy.

The whole Sinterklaas thing is the same as your Santaclaus, it's a collective lie, all childeren believe in him and feel very traited after they are told he is a fake. My parents didn't want to do that so I never really believed in him, but I did write him letters and gave carrots for his horse (did you know that sinterklaas has the only horse who can walk on the roofs of houses?). Sinterklaas is very huge over here, he's on the television every late november till 5 december. There's much merchandising, lot's of daddies dress like him or blackpete, there's even an official Sinterklaas to play him in televisionshows. I didn't believe he existed, cause my parents told me he didn't, but we did took part in the whole celebration, so I did believe a tiny. Even when my dad dressed like him in front of me, the moment he putted on the fake beard and moustache I was like
AHHH, Sinterklaas! (it's my dad, right? is he not?)

so that was my history lesson
you all should know this

I don't understand these children that feel betrayed when they find out, personally. Thanks for the Dutch Santa version though. The black/little/whatever pete's are pretty funny/interesting.

Dutch Santa?
What you mean is that Santa is the American Sinterklaas!
Don't forget about who was first!

I saw a history about Santa and it said that Santa was Sinterklaas plus a scandinavian type of Pere Noel (as the french call him)

This is more propaganda. American Santa Claus has been providing gifts for children all over the world and yet gets no respect. Instead credit goes to other more obscure Santas who carry much less of the worlds gift-giving burden. Did you know that American Santa accounts for over 80% of the worlds Gross Domestic Gift Production? All anyone wants to talk about is the reindeers sizeable gas emmissions and his unfortunate history in the elf-trade market. Sure he's made mistakes, but, his motives are pure and he has been a force of good in the world for generations. Sure his discrimination against a young Rudolph was hurtful to red-nosed reindeers everywhere. But his affirmative action program eventually led Rudolph to the front of the team. It cannot be argued that red-nosed reindeer dont have the same, or greater opportunity to lead the sled as non-red nosed reindeer. Where there some eskimos displaced when he set up his refuge in the North Pole? Yes, but, come on, its Santa, ever hear of a little something called eminent domain????

So please, please, please lets keep this record straight. American Santa Claus RULES!!!!

Sinterklaas is my main man. He gives me way more presents than de Kerstman.

Even if you're Michael or Janet: it's a sad, sad planet.

Too bad your website is so enormously horribly crappy, then all your efforts to spam it across the forum would not be in vain, oh shirtless wonder.

Not to risk a political debate, but I always kind of looked at Americans that way too, except definitely not "second-rate"

Maybe we bastardized Santa Claus but that's our god-given right because if anyone has a problem with it we'll just liberate them from their oppressive dictatorships. (I hear that the whole reason for the Iraqi War was because Saddam Hussein was claiming that an ancient Mesopotamian myth featured a rabbit a little bit too similar to our own Easter Bunny...)

I love how the church piled on a bunch of fanciful nonsense to discourage pagan traditions. I guess they finally figured out that making brussels sprouts the official food of Christmas (thereby reminding everyone to stop having so much fun and to ponder how sinful and bad and undeserving they are) was a loser's game.

Are you able to provide as much supplemental material to back up your points in real life? Like, if we were standing face-to-face, talking about brussel sprouts, could you just whip a picture or informative article out of thin air?

what the hell? You on my case today or what, glacial?

And yes, as it so happens, I do carry the entire collection of Encyclopaedia Brittanica volumes in a rucksack on my back. And a little hobo-stick with old soda-bread wrapped up in a bandana. My life is a hard and lonely one. Please don't tease me so.

This is an embarassing story, but one time I was playing Santa Claus at First Baptist here in Laramie, in the Fellowship Hall where we have a small congregation with food and drinks after the worship service. Well, I was sitting there with this little girl on my lap, and she was telling me what she wanted for Christmas. All of a sudden I let out this GIGANTIC fart, and due to the large area of the room we were in it was as though it echoed. I turned beet red; I'm not sure anyone could tell under my huge beard. The little girl shrieked and ran off, holding her nose, and everyone else was just kind of quiet for the rest of the time. There had been a line to see me, but after that it was about fifteen minutes until any of the parents would let their kids come near me again, long after the fart smell had dissipated.
