This about the 11/29 concert in Paris. There's a discussion going on at 'frank black live'. All posts say people considered the show 'amazing'and the like. I feel bad because to me the show was very bad. It was way too loud, full of mistakes (when you could hear the music), people were getting more and more bored (fewer and fewer did care to applaude as the show went on). and this is a nice review, believe me. My point here is not to say "frank did a bad show", i guess it must happen sometimes. My point is how fans can be happy with so little of a show. I mean do we have to be going "frank was god yeasterday" everytimes we see him. Do we have to hear monkey gone to heaven and caribou till 2035? Can we get any critics about frank here or is it just gonna be "frank is god" forever ? Yes, i'm upset. the way i see it i got 25 euros stolen from my pocket by a stoned second rate californian rock band. I think my little post is going to make me super popular on the site but fuck. |

I applaud your honesty.
Stoned California rock band...I like that description.
You are right. Because it is a fan site, we should be able to express when we don't feel that FB came through with a good show just as we would praise him as well.
Can you go into a little more detail as to what was so bad about this particular show? |

I agree with the fact that we should tell when something's wrong. But I went to this concert, and I strongly disagree with what Worries says. Yeah, there were mistakes, Dave Phillips especially wasn't very concentrated, Worries is right about this, but it didn't bother me. It's a concert, you don't expect musicians to be perfect. The sound wasn't too loud, I didn't even use my earplugs (I stayed at the back, near the desk). And people bored??? There were 2 ENCORES! I don't think it has ever been done during this tour. Do you think Frank would've come back twice if people hadn't applauded? I won't write anymore on this topic, cause there's no point in arguing with someone who calls them "stoned 2nd rate California band". The day I'll see Frank doing a bad show, I'll write it here, but that day hasn't arrived yet.

stoned californian band?it would seem so judging from this photo.since i wasn't there i can't tell if it was a bad show but it's true they did no encores in italy and in most of the other gigs so at least the band thought that people were having a good time(and since fb is so sensible about dancing-bear encores he must have been really convinced to return on stage).anyway everybody has a right to an opinion and i respect yours.i wouldn't like this board transformed in a frank black mudjahedin board complete with suicide bombers...

Yeah, by the way...Stoned California Rock band I can see,
Stoned SECOND RATE California rock band....never.
Even on their off nights, it's hard to believe this band as second rate...BUT if that's your opinion, let it fly, man. |

I'm just writing a bad review of the show to demonstrate that some fans here (not all) have that tendency to say the show was aaaaaawesome while it should be considered merely ok. I retrieve the "2nd rate" because i ain't looking for no fight. ok so that 's my bad review : despite what denis says the sound wasn't good at all - at least for people like me standing at about meters from the stage. there were three guitar players on stage and when all playing electric guitars you just couldn't recognize the song before frank sang : i heard about nothing of velvety, i want rock, hermaphroditos and massif central. then frank picked the folk guitar and then we could distinguish music instead of a blur of hiss. But sadly they played quite bad, frank sometimes out of key and fucking up vocals, dave starting too late or too slow about each time for a few songs and rich sat to play the piano and must just have felt he had to make a lot of mistakes. rythm section we know them by heart. Then in on for some pixie monkey and cactus (nod good) and nimrod (bad version) and caribou and velouria(again not good). Someone tell him we don't wanna hear pixie songs anymore. And that slow version of 666, just bury it. I left at the encore, disguted.
And the good review (among others): The show was amazing, incredible, the most exciting gig that i've ever seen of the big Frank . Seems to be a long show, something like 1h45. Dave Philips was jumping everywhere (i've never seen him like that), rich Gilbert was completly crazy and Frank seems to enjoy a lot being here. the sound quality was excellent and the audience extremly receptive and not only for the Pixies stuff. People were jumping everywhere during the most part of the show and became crazy for headach, freedom rock or jane queen of love and of course caribou, velouria or where is my mind.
thanks Mr Black and spécial thanks to the catholics.
Truth must be in between these 2 reviews.

Of course your location in the club is going to affect the sound. The closer you are to the stage, the more you trade sound for proximity to FB. Standing by the soundboard is where you are probably going to get close to the best sound, since it is mixed from this point and all instruments should sound clearly.
If you put your head right beside, say, Rich's monitor, you're probably not going to hear much from Frank or Dave(s) or maybe even Scott. We try to stand right in front of Frank and unfortunately, this means that a little of the other guys are lost, but being centred also means we get a fair distribution from both sides as well as a good feel for the drums, though perhaps Frank is a little louder than he would be if we were elsewhere.
We got stuck standing left in Regina and we missed out on a lot of Dave's stuff. We should've moved.
As for mistakes and everything, that's too bad... they're usually pretty tight though never infallible (listen to WIMM from The State in Regina show, for example). I've never been able to see them on a weekend though, so maybe they get a little crazier/drunker/more stoned...
Mun Chien - what's your source for that pic and you allude to have others that I assume are of similar quality? I'm still collecting photos for the bios, and I'd love to use that one for Dave's. But of course, I need permission.

Love that pic.
Has anyone else at the show given it a bad review? Or just Worries? If you got 2 encores, it cant be said that the crowd didnt enjoy it. No way FB comes back out unless he is pretty much overwhelmed with the crowd response. |

Wow, maybe others take if for granted but hearing Caribou and Veloria...that is truly a treat. I have yet to hear those two live from FB. Lucky bastards....anyway... Yeah stay away from the stage to get a more balanced sound. If you must be at the front, you know to catch ALL the details, then pick the player you want to hear (almost exclusively) for the rest of the night. Try the bass player...you should still be able to hear most of the band too.
...veloria...lucky bastards....

You're right i'm spoiled. I made no comment on caribou cause it was fine. The man had a golden voice. At the bataclan he sang how you went very beautifully. then either one of the blond brothers (i think dave) fucked up the solos real well. Now denis, am i wrong ? am i wrong ? "You're not wrong walter, you're just an asshole" (The big lebowski) Now as for where i stood at the show, i was at about 15 meters from the stage, 10 meters in front of the soundboard right in front of frank, and there i repeat chaos ruled. i went upstairs to the balcony and the sound was just as bad, only lower. Hard to buy that people use word like 'awesome' after such a show. i think i dig frank's music enough to be able to say no when if he makes shit. yo soy un pistolero. |

that is an awesome photo..
that would be funny if that was taken mid-song, like when Dave is supposed to be doing a solo or something.. like "wow, he is unfocused".. |

Yep, Dave fucked up the first note of Caribou. I don't call that "fucking up the solos real well" or whatever.

Worries, if you have been to a FB show before you should know what to expect. If it was any different than before, than you should know this particular show was circumstantial. If you haven't been to a FB show than maybe you just found out they are not for you. I've been to loud ones and to not so loud ones. I won't say they are spectacular or terrible. But I surely enjoy them. If you don't, don't waste your time. Though, you probably don't need anyone to tell you this...

I have seen the FB show last monday at the Botanique in Brussels. I never heard him sing or perform so well. Even the catholics sounded real great, and I'm not really a catholic fan. Too bad they pass by only every two years or so. |

We are spoiled here in the states. We get at least 1 show a year in Dallas and often 2. This little European foray has us Americans in the back seat on the SMYT tour. I cant wait for them to get back to the US so I can see a few shows. |

I was standing 12 inches from frank and I even need earplugs when he played acoustic. This is allright. The day after that I stood 10 inches from Rich and my ears would burn when he touched the pedal steel. This is ok.
If I want a nice sound I should play a FB cd, I'm there for the proximity and I'm dancing and singing/screaming so hard that I often don't care about the show.
I have to say that I like the 2001 shows a tiny better

thank god sonic youth made chapell hill, NC and the "cats cradle" famous...we get to see the man 1-2 times a year, easy...
for those that havent been to the cradle, but only heard about it...well...the beer is cheap, if youre into that. the new venue is bigger than the hole it used to be in. the owner actually cares for the community...i'll leave it at that. |

ok so I wasnt there 11/29 Paris, but I would have liked to be there. perhapts the awe and beauty of Paris played a role in the performance. If I were there I would be preoccupied with all that before me than playing the song right. monkey gone to heaven and caribou after all this time I applaud you, hearing the oldies live still puts the hairs on the back of my neck rise.
