Black Flag. Greg Ginn didn't give a fuck about being cool or punk. Punk is not giving a fuck about being punk. Rollins-era is best--he's a scary bastard. Chavo was weakest. Keith Morris deserves an honarable mention--too much of a good-time charlie for my taste. Dez comes in second-place. The Clash were more pop in my opinion, as were the Sex Pistols and any UK bands that I ever heard (probably filtered by distance). |

X They are my new Pixies. I think Kelly Osborne's stolen her look from Exene, who is a hundred times cooler. Billy Zoom is a blond haired Joey Santiago (thier both on equal brillant status in my books).

I've listened to Los Angles, Wild Gift and More Fun in the New World, all of which are excellent. Really simple from the outset, but the more you listen, the more amazing the rifts become, along side great lyrics which reveal more and more every time. Heard they sort of lost it after those albums so hav'nt really listened to much after those.

CRASS were the best for me - not only did they do some outstanding music of their own, but used their own label to put out a great crop of 7" singles by other acts - particularly Flux Of Pink Indians, Zounds, Honey Bane and Conflict. There was also a terrific 12" on Crass Records called Bullshit Detector, packed with demos recorded in people's bedrooms and garages on mono cassette recorders - true DIY punk spirit. |

In the late 80's I was searching for the new X.
I can remember when "The New World" was played on the radio around 83 or 84. None of my friends cared for it but I was hooked. They were the first real Punk band that I liked. Never really got into the Ramones or the Talking Heads, and they were East coast bands..go figure.

Hey Greg - best place is Logans. Rough-looking, but good enough.
Best sound is Lucky, imo.
Steamers is also pretty good.
I've been out of the scene lately....any good shows coming up? www.LiveVictoria.com is a great place to check to see what's coming up..last show i went to was Martin Tielli..blew my mind. |
