I think the book was written in the early 90's. And yeah, it's disturbing, but I found much worse: try to read anything by the marquis de Sade, especially the Story of Juliette or the 120 Days of Sodomme. Now that's ugly.

I'm not a big reader, but the third and final Chapter of 1984 was the most disturbing thing I've read in a book. It's very...twisted. |

i've only read GLAMOURAMA and THE INFORMERS by Brett Easton Ellis. I loved GLAMOURAMA and that was plenty disturbing.. though slightly cartoonish as well.. didn't care for THE INFORMERS.. i really dig BEE though.. i think he's tremendously talented (and misunderstood).. up there with Don Delillo.. |

Yeah, The Informers isn't that great, but Glamourama has to be my fave. I would rank his books as follows: 1) Glamourama, 2) Am Psycho, 3) Rules Of Attraction, 4) Less Than Zero, 5) The Informers. Did I miss any? Have they already released in the USA the movie based on the Rules Of Attraction? I really wonder how it's gonna be. That lame guy from Dawson's Creek is acting in it.
Regarding the Marquis de Sade: you can read the 120 Days of Sodom (in english) here: http://www.monsieurlesix.be/bibliography/eng120-0.html I definitely don't recommend it to anyone. Leave a bucket next to you in case you'd want to throw up...

yeah, i don't recommend "120 days of Sodome" to anyone too. this book is pure perversion. i begin to read it a few years ago, and after 100-150 pages, i close it and don't burn it just because it's a book, and i'm not a Nazi ! but, if you want to read Marqui de Sade, it's better to read "la philosophie dans le boudoir" (don't know it in english).

The most disturbing non-Sade book I've read is probably JG Ballard's Atrocity Exhibition. I really liked it, it's very fragmented and surreal, classic early Ballard. Speaking of Sade, anyone see the Pasolini film on 120 Days of Sodom? there's one that sticks in your head for awhile. |

Bazza, I know for a fact Ian named the song after the book, JG Ballard was one of his favorite authors. He also loved Crash. |

Against Nature - Joris Karl Huysmans
I don't know if I'd call it the most shocking book I've ever read, but it's really amoral and left me feeling uneasy. It's also a fascinating glimpse into the interests of the author - esoteric to say the least. Influenced Oscar Wilde and cronies - well worth a read, if you haven't already.
