I absolutely hate living in an area of the world where it snows 4 to 5 months of the year. Okay, I don't absolutely hate it, I like the snow from about this point in the year until the end of December, but after that it has overstayed it's welcome, as has the cold, and they best just get the fuck on up outta my face! |

Heh, welcome to my world. We've had snow since October.
It was funny flying back home from the States, you could literally see the line where the snow started. I just looked out the window from my book and all of a sudden, everything was white, and I was shocked since there was no snow when I left and the weather was quite nice in Detroit. A gasp and then, "No way!" and I looked back and you could see green and then all of a sudden white. Then I chuckled to myself and thought, "Must be the 49th parallel."
Listen, it's a boring story, I know, but SOMEONE had to reply.

Wyoming, in which I used to live back about thirteen years ago, had only two seasons, one spring and one winter. The hottest it ever got was like the beginning of springtime, in July, which was nice because it was a dry heat, not all muggy like it is down here in the southeast. The winters, however, were terrible, probably not as bad as they are in Canada, but comparable at least.

Sounds a lot like here...
Spring: April + May (except this year, it was just May) Summer: June-August Fall: September + October Winter: November-March
A month and a half hardly counts as a season, though, in which case, fall becomes winter, and spring becomes summer. Either way, winters are ridiculously long and coooooooooooold. Cold enough that by then end, when it starts warming up and gets into anywhere above -10, it feels so warm and people are out and about in t-shirts. Seriously, -5 and everyone in t-shirts, some in shorts and sandals. You'd never do that in the fall when you're coming from +30-40 degree weather, but in the spring, it's practically balmy. :)

I can't believe we don't have snow here yet. However, it is raining and hovering around the freezing line so maybe I should just shut up.

Don't know if any of the UK guys watched Horizon a couple of weeks back. ( long running 'serious' science show on the BBC for all you non Brits).
They mooted the possibility of the gulf stream shutting down (because of global warming) and plunging the UK into climatic conditions more akin to the latitude of the UK. i.e. Moscow/Canada etc.
I love those programmes about meteorites hitting the earth, super volcanos etc. I think they call it disaster porn.

I don't mind snow and cold that much - people here complain about it constantly, but at the same time use it as a source of regional pride, like we're better than certain others just because the weather here is more unpredictable and generally colder. The part I like is in late September/early October when the temperature starts to go below zero: everybody cries about how cold it is. Then in early March when it finally gets back up to around -4 or thereabouts everybody runs around in shorts. So in spirit, the Canadian prairie summer really lasts from April to September if you ask me. Regardless of what the weather really says, during those months the only thing that kills everyone's summer mood seems to be the occasional July snow.
Nothing is ever something. |

I love snow and I love cold weather. I feel like stabbing myself in the gullett anytime it gets over 80 degrees. Call me weird, everyone else does.

'Disaster porn.' Genius. I'm not convinced the evil coldness would be such a good idea here, the weather's quite bad enough as it is, thanks very much.

Ok - so I used to live in Chicago, which has an average winter temperature around 10 degrees below Fairbanks, Alaska. Living there in winter was like working in the disater porn industry, given that at least one tourist a year bought it from chunks of falling ice coming off the skyscrapers. That, plus the kamikaze snowplows, made it something worth doing, since now I really enjoy all other weather. Except partly cloudy...for some reason it fills me with a deep angst. Go figure.

I'm still in Wyoming. I'm about freezing my nuts off. My motel room here at the Circle S is cold as blazes. I can't seem to find the thermostat. I've talked to the guy at the front desk, but he is oriental and he doesn't seem to understand. He did manage to tell me that he'd be by later, but that was like, two days ago...

Funny someone mention this snow thing.
We had our first fliries here tonight and our expecting our first little snow to give us all a sign of Winter.

Oh, lord. My hippie parents (long-divorced and conservatized and/or yuppified now) had a big ol' mega-hippie wedding in our yard, and everybody held hands in a big circle singing this song. Just as they sang the line "here comes the sun"... well, that's just what happened, it broke from the clouds - what a Simpson's moment! |

Yep. Of the house I grew up in anyway. We lived on the third floor of a big Victorian-era home with 2 other families on the other floors, our kitchen was a tiny closet (used to be the servants' quarter's kitchen), and the property had about 10 acres - it's hard to remember exactly - I think I was 5 or 6 when I moved out. I should say, to stay on topic, that 1977 (I was 4) was a huge winter for snow in Louisville, KY - we got about 3 feet in 2 days or something. Back when big snow meant serious fun and escape from the laws of regular society. I love disastrous weather - people who depend on regularity and perfection totally flip out, and the world seems more right to me.
Mind you, when I lived in Chicago, that one winter of 70 below zero (Fahrenheit!) temperatures (adjusted for windchill - it was actually 40 below, I think - do you remember that year Spudboy?) was a bit much. You could freeze to the sidewalk waiting for the bus. And people did get killed by falling chunks of ice downtown. I worked n the Sears tower for a while, and they had posts and chains along the sidewalk so you could pull yourself down the sidewalk and to the door, because the wind was so strong. Man, that place sucks in the winter. |

Ooh, wow, that's pretty neat. At first I was just imagining tons of people in a circle in the front lawn of a suburban home...with cars driving by wondering what's going on...haha. |
