I need to build on my relatively feeble 10% posting record, so what should I buy? I've just been paid today (to quote Steve Albini), so I want to go down to Camden and buy two out of these records:
1) Low - Secret Name 2) Mclusky - ...Do Dallas 3) Neutral Milk Hotel - In An Aeroplane Over The Sea
Which should it be? Answers on a postcard (or here at a pinch)

not sure i can answer that question cause i wouldn't buy either of the other two... if i was you, i'd get 'happy songs for happy people' by Mogwai as the 2nd one. |

So I'm the only one here who loves "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea"?

I see nothing wrong in purchasing the Neutral Milk Hotel record. It's a fine album. But... you could always pick a Minutemen album instead. |

Go with the NMH album, from what I've heard...

I knew it was ZZ Top. Honest. Actually, I did but I completely forgot. Chances are I like the Rapeman version better anyway. However, I'm not that interested in Minutemen. Sorry. The list is up to four now though. Mogwai NMH Low Mclusky

Aeroplane over the Sea is simply an amazing record. It will break your heart. Jeff Mangum has a very emotional (not emo!) voice, it's quite compelling. He manages to stay on the edge of breaking, yet remain in tune, with lovely melodies. Many of the songs seem like just a man and an acoustic guitar, but other instruments float in, some very strange, like a saw (yes, an actual wood cutting saw). I really can't recomend this album enough. I haven't heard the Low record, though they're the polar oppostive of McLusky.
Here's a short list of my must-haves: Ween - The Mollusk or White Pepper (how about both!) Spoon - They have 4 records. Pick one. A Series of Sneaks or Kill the Moonlight are good first choices. They're very different, though. The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi or Soft Bulletin are good starting points. Paul Simon - Graceland (a classic must have) Guided By Voices - Huge catalogue... start with... Mag Earwhig!

Some good stuff there, Speedy. Some more suggestions:
Blue Aeroplanes - Beatsongs is very good but Life Model is excellent.
Foil - Never got hip. Scottish band. First track is very pixiesque. Dirt cheap on amazon.co.uk. (secondhand)
Tomahawk - Tomahawk. Mike Patton (Faith No More) band. Usual weird goings ons.
Longwave - The strangest things. Have been referred to as the American Coldplay. Very unassuming.
Zita Swoon - I paint pictures on a wedding dress

If you want excellent noisy off kilter rock go for do dallas you can scream along to. Otherwise go for Neutral Milk, because I've never heard the other. |

Speedy, I have Graceland and Yoshimi, but the others are intriguing choices... I think NMH and Low are winning at the moment: you have until 0500 tomorrow (1pm here) to make your case.

Evergreen - Evergreen. Great band evoking the Stooges and Television. Timeless record, their only one.
Pretty much anything by Mono
Dead Milkmen prior to 1992
Los Straitjackets! Particularly their live album.
Devo, Devo, Devo.
I looked for a cult to join, then decided to just play "Sink". Hey! I sank Toledo, Ohio! |

While on the topic of "What should I buy", I'm thinking about getting a Wrens CD. Pitchforkmedia.com gave Meadowlands an excellent review, I believe 9.5 out 10. Anyone have anything to say about the album?

I bought "Graceland" the other night. It might take me a few listens to get into because I'm so used to the Simon and Garfunkel tunes I grew up with. Man, they folk so hard.

Wow! I love Evergreen! And all the other bands you mentioned - I second that emotion.

So the vote is in, the ballots counted, the dimpled chads dumped slyly in the bin...
The winners were Low - Secret Name; and Mogwai - Happy Songs For Happy People.
Actually, I wanted to get Neutral Milk Hotel, but neither Tower nor HMV had it, and I didn't the time in the end to scour the indies.
I've been living in London for over two years now, but I still don't know the best record shops. WOuld I find this record in Rough Trade? Or are the Camden shops a better bet? If so, which? Tell me now!
