Scarla - The first paragraph of your quote is an editorial comment. Later in the quote from the report US policy towards Iraq for the last 11 years was reiterated.
"Therefore the US should conduct an immediate policy review toward Iraq including military, energy, economic and political/ diplomatic assessments."
The above purports to be actual text from the report. It is also completely consistent with the US position on Iraq since the end of the first Gulf War. How could the military aspect not be considered? Our fighter jets were being constantly shot at in the no-fly zones. The Bush admin. inherited a military conflict with Iraq in that sense. Iraq had been in violation of the cease fire agreement it had signed with the huge coalition from that war for years. The timing of the report/quotes also doesnt mean anything to me. Bush, when running for President was clear that his policy towards Iraq would be the same as spelled out by the US congress under Clinton, that is regime change.
Also, the direct quote from the report should warm the hearts of the 'world coalition' camp: "'The United States should then develop an integrated strategy with key allies in Europe and Asia, and with key countries in the Middle East, to restate goals with respect to Iraqi policy and to restore a cohesive coalition of key allies.'"
Finally, it should surprise no one that the biggest energy providers and energy companies in the country would be consulted on a massive regulatory and legislative issue facing their industry. Any and all governments do the same. When the topic is healthcare, insurance companies, pharmaceutical co.'s, Dr's, Hostpitals are all called in to advise, comment and consent. Same goes for Banking or any other industry. No congressman could possibly have enough information to be an expert in ALL industrial fields. So, namechecking energy co's that participated in the meetings is a nonevent. If on the other hand specific handouts were included in the energy bill to benefit specific companies exclusively, that is wrong. I think what Congress has allowed Tom Daschle to do for Ethanol production (creating demand where none exists) while his wife earns over a million dollars a year as a lobbyist for the ethanol industry (his son is a lobbyist as well) is wrong. Finally for those who view this as a Republican thing (I know that isnt you Scarla) Ken Lay and Enron were meeting with (and financially supporting) Democrats and Clinton during the prior administrations. Doesnt mean Bill is Kenny-boy's lapdog, but, linking Enron to the Republicans or Bush is folly. They made all there money in the 90's when the Dems had control. |
